NFL Announces Cardinals' 2003 Schedule
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thursday, April 3, 2003
Tempe, Arizona - Two new faces and three new places
await the Cardinals and third-year Head Coach Dave
McGinnis in 2003 against a schedule that includes six
of the past 10 Super Bowl winners.
The Cardinals open their season on Sunday, September 7
at Detroit when they make their first visit to Ford
Field, the Lions' second-year home, for Steve
Mariucci's debut as Detroit's head coach. The contest
marks the 16th consecutive season the Cardinals have
been scheduled to open on the road and the first of 16
Sunday afternoon assignments on Arizona's 2003 slate of
games.
The Cardinals open their home schedule the next two
Sundays with their two earliest home games since 1983.
The Seattle Seahawks visit Sun Devil Stadium on Sunday,
September 14, followed by the Green Bay Packers (SB
XXXI) the following weekend.
Arizona returns to the road the next two weeks with
road games at St. Louis (SB XXXIV) and Dallas (SB
XXVIII, XXX) on September 28 and October 5,
respectively. The latter will be NFL career rushing
king Emmitt Smith's return to Dallas where he starred
for 13 seasons. The former Cowboy signed with the
Cardinals on March 26.
The following week, Arizona begins a stretch of three
consecutive home games, sandwiched around an October 19
open date, when the Baltimore Ravens (SB XXXV), San
Francisco 49ers (SB XXIX), and Cincinnati Bengals visit
Sun Devil Stadium on October 12, 26, and November 2,
respectively. The 49ers will be under the direction of
new Head Coach Dennis Erickson.
The Cardinals make their first appearances at two of
the NFL's other newest stadiums when they travel to
Pittsburgh's Heinz Field (November 9) and Cleveland
Browns Stadium (November 16). The former marks the
Cardinals' first road game at Pittsburgh since 1985,
the latter their first at Cleveland since 1994.
After a November 23 home game against St. Louis,
Arizona faces three road games over the next four
weeks, traveling to Chicago and rebuilt Soldier Field
(November 30), San Francisco (December 7), and Seattle
(December 21), a stretch broken by a December 14 home
game against Carolina.
The Cardinals conclude their regular season at home for
the first time since 1998 when the Minnesota Vikings
visit the desert.
Also, the Cards' 2003 home schedule includes three
"piggyback" weekends at Sun Devil Stadium with Arizona
State University-September 13/14 (Utah State
University/Seattle Seahawks), October 11/12 (University
of Oregon/Baltimore Ravens), and November 1/2
(University of California-Berkeley/Cincinnati Bengals).
The Cardinals' entire 2003 regular-season schedule
follows. The preseason schedule, which will be
announced at a later date, includes home games against
Dallas (week one) and Chicago (week three), and road
trips to San Diego (week two) and Minnesota (week
four).
