Hey ASF nation---it's Mitch Keim here coming to you from the east corner of Cardinals' headquarters. Here is an exclusive preview of the deals and roster moves that my fine nephew Steve has in the works. So onward we go with the Keim Quest to do all the Cardinals can to be the best football team on the planet.

QB (3): Carson Palmer; Phillip Sims; Logan Thomas

Trade: QB Drew Stanton to the New York Jets for CB Marcus Williams. Todd Bowles gets some stability at a highly unstable QB spot and the Cardinals get a good, young CB, who would't get much playing time in the Jets' All-Star secondary.

I am not buying into MJ's theory that the Cardinals will and should keep 2 QBs on the 53 Man Roster. In fact, I think both Sims and Thomas would be claimed---my biggest fear being that they would be claimed by the Seahawks and 49ers respectively. Sims has some Russell Wilson like qualities to his game. The same applies to Thomas and Colin Kaepernick. Thus, I think they both would be very good system fits in SEA and SF.

For scout team reasons---I like having Sims to help us prepare for SEA. Same for Thomas to help us prepare for SF.

I have liked what I have seen from Sims so much that I would make him the #2, which would allow Thomas to put some time in at TE. I would also be curious to know if Thomas could rush the edge in passing situations. His size, frame, speed and pure athleticism suggests to me that he could be a good pass rusher. Love the tackle he made two weeks ago on Malik Wilson's interception. It was one of the best tackles I have seen in Cardinal red.

RB (5): Andre Ellington; David Johnson; Chris Johnson; Kerwynn Williams; Stepfan Taylor.

Having the three speed RBs in Juke, DJ and CJ allows BA to keep the pedal on the metal. Williams is my choice for kickoff returner, and for running the ball late in games between the tackles. I am choosing Taylor over Hughes because he is better on STs and he can do all the Hughes can do, rushing, blocking and receiving.

PS: Paul Lasike---keep developing this physical stud RB/FB.

TE (3): Darren Fells; Jermaine Gresham; Luke Stocker;

Trade: TE Troy Niklas, DE Kareem Martin and a conditional 3rd/4th round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft to the Browns for OLB Barkevious Mingo.

In a trade of oft-injured players, the Browns think they can tap into Niklas' potential at TE, groom Martin at SOLB behind Paul Kruger and if Mingo plays in more than 10 games for the Cardinals they get a 3rd rounder---if not, a 4th rounder. They like the tandem of Nate Orchard and Scott Solomon on the other side. Mingo, who had surgery to repair a torn meniscus three weeks ago, is projected to be ready to play by game one. He gives the Cardinals the kind of instant fit, athletic WOLB that would allow them to switch Alex Okafor to starting SOLB.

Trade: T Bobby Massie to the Bucs for TE Luke Stocker.

The Cardinals can afford to keep 3 TEs because Larry Fitzgerald is often used like a flex TE and they have three good blocking TEs in Fells, Gresham and Stocker.

PS: Gerald Christian---gives him some time to carve his niche as an H-back.

OL (8): Jared Veldheer; Mike Iupati; A.Q. Shipley; Jonathan Cooper; Bradley Sowell; Ted Larsen; Earl Watford; D.J. Humphries.

Bradley Sowell and Ted Larsen fill in until D.J. Humphries and Mike Iupati are ready to take over.

PS: T Rob Crisp; G/C Anthony Steen---coaches are high on both young players and feel if need be they can be called up.

WR (6): Larry Fitzgerald; Michael Floyd; John Brown, Jaron Brown; J.J. Nelson; Jaxson Shipley.

Fitzgerald doubles as a flex-TE. So could Floyd and Jaron Brown if need be. Plenty of speed, quick feet and punt return ability from Smoke, Fire and Shipley (whom I believe will get claimed by the Patriots if he is waived).

NT (2): Rodney Gunter; Xavier Williams.

Two very physical rookies.

DE (5): Frostee Rucker; Calais Campbell; Cory Redding; Josh Mauro; Ed Stinson.

Trade: DE Matt Shaughnessy and NT Alameda Ta'amu to the Ravens for ILB Arthur Brown.

Ravens need run stoppers, Cardinals need speed at WILB.

Solid versatility and depth.

ILB (4): Kevin Minter; Arthur Brown; Sean Weatherspoon, Alani Fua.

if Weatherspoon remains injured---he gets placed on the short-term IR and Kenny Demens takes his place. Fua can be a factor on STs and at nickel LB.

PS: Edwin Jackson; Gabe Martin---future thunder and lightning.

OLB (5): Alex Okafor; Barkevious Mingo; Markus Golden; Dwight Freeney; LaMarr Woodley.

Adding Mingo and Freeney would be a huge boost to the pass rush.

IR: Shaq Riddick; Zach Wagenmann.

CB (4): Patrick Peterson; Jerraud Powers; Justin Bethel; Marcus Williams.

Adding Williams rounds out a talented group.

PS: Cariel Brooks---hopefully he doesn't get claimed off waivers.

S (5): Tyrann Mathieu; Deone Bucannon; Rashad Johnson; Tony Jefferson; Harold Jones-Quartey.

Poised for being the stalwarts and impact players of the defense.

ST (3): Chandler Catanzaro; Mike Leach; Dave Zastudil.

There is potential magic in this group when healthy and focused in.

So---that's all from Cardinals' headquarters here today. This is Mitch Keim reporting. And, as always Cardinals' fans, stay thirsty my friends.:newcards:

no way do you trade our #2 QB and stick with two guys who can barely move the ball against pizza deliverymen. Had to stop reading right there.

Especially for a CB.

Nice if it would all happen. If the trades you propose do not materialize and they are pretty doubtful, I think Ta'amu is a first cut. I think everyone should post who they think the first 15 cuts will be to get to 75.

Phillip Sims, Jaxson Shipley, and Harold Jones-Quartey are not going to be on any NFL roster, any time soon in my opinion.

Good right up tho.

You don't put Riddick on IR unless he's really injured, IMO...If he can play, he plays...This team needs speed and length at OLB to be on the field, not IR. Right now he's back on the field and should stay that way.

If you are going to trade Stanton then trade for a QBOF such as Zach Mettenburgh at Tennesse or Mike Glennon at Tampa Bay. Neither of them are going to see the field as long as Mariata and Winston play. They sit behind Palmer for a year or 2 to be groomed. Maybe in addition to Stanton you throw in mid round pick also.

Yeah I didn't make it past trade Stanton and go with Simms and Thomas as the backups.

+1 Shipley & HJQ are definitely NFL players imo.

Maybe, but they're imminently replaceable. Guys like that come out every year, and it's not like we're hurting for WR talent now or in the near future. Or safeties.

Stanton has a $4M cap number because of playing time incentives he hit last year. Why would teams trade cost-controlled rookie contracts for a guy with a high cap number entering free agency next year?

Further, Stanton hasn't worked with Chan Gailey before, so he'd have to adapt to an entirely new offense in a week.

Fun write up Mitch. I would keep Massie and Stanton though. Massie is the only good right tackle we have. I think its going to be at least a year before Humphries might be able to play RT for us. Would love to see us bring in Freeney. I think he can still produce if he is used properly.

agreed, if I traded stanton one of those 2 guys would be who I traded for but I dont see why teams would swap backup QBs. Still wish we took Zach instead of Logan.

Elaborate please.

Sure, but realize this is relative to NFL talent, all three are great football players, but just not NFL talent.

Phillip Sims
He is slow to read defenses, and it cause him to get Kevin Kolb feet and start back pedalling out of the pocket to extend plays. Not good in the NFL when you are playing against the 1's and 2's, and even worse he is not that quick, NFL starters will track him down easily. He also throw a nice ball but his arm strength is very average. If he doesn't get a perfect spiral on the ball it flutters and dies. I would be hard pressed to even put Sims on the practice squad, personally. Nothing against the kid either, heard him on KTAR and he seems like a very bright kid, with a great attitude. But, he is going to need to either improve his accuracy or his poise in the pocket to stay in the NFL.

Jaxson Shipley
He is too slow for the NFL. His straight line speed for someone who is returning kicks and punts is no where near where it needs to be. He has great quickness, and good jukes but that amounts to nothing if you cannot pull away from the defender or even make some yardage before they track you down. As a receiver he is very much average. I would have Brittan Golden on my team before having Shipley, and Golden is not making this roster either in my opinion. Thus I would imagine that Golden would find a NFL team before Shipley. Not to mention the ridiculous number of wider receivers in the NFL right now, there is a glut of talent at the position. Thus I cannot see why a NFL takes a slow, and average wide receiver.

Harold Jones-Quartey
No matter how much Ron Wolfley talks about this guy, he is not very good. He may lay big hits, and sacrifice his body, but I would be more impressed if he wrapped up when tackling and did so near the line of scrimmage, not 5 yards off of it. His coverage skills are quite poor, and he is playing against 3 stringers and guys that won't be playing in the NFL this year. I personally think the secondary for this team is a work in progress. C.Brooks, Roberts, Legree, Richardson, Jones-Quartey, are just a few players that have looked quite unimpressive so far. Maybe it is the scheme they are playing, or something but once Justin Bethel leaves the field in these preseason games the secondary looks lost. But, maybe I should re-think HJQ, because there is a lack of good safeties in this league, so he many latch on with some team, but that would be more of a case of lack of talent.

The good news is that none of these three players are very important to the upcoming season, so really this doesn't matter.

The 53 spots come week 1 are going to be filled with starters, backup and a few jackasses that either are playing like they have been shot with a tranquilizer dart (DJ Humphries) or are just plain stupid and unmotivated (Bobbie Massie). So, I doubt there will be any room for project players.

Even if there is an extra spot, would you keep any of the 3 players above over having an extra defensive lineman ? Why cut NFL quality talent for guys that are having trouble standing out against 3rd stingers ?

Thus ends my elaboration.

Massie will be placed on the Reserve: Suspended list and won't count toward the final 53 for the length of his suspension.

FWIW, I'm really nervous about the idea of getting rid of Shaughnessy. He's not a great player, but he's versatile and doesn't have a huge contract — maybe. If the Cards are convinced that Mauro has essentially claimed his role for 1/6th the cost, I'm not going to argue.

Thank you. People are raving about a quarterback who had one porous game in which he looked like a deer in headlights against 4th-5th string talent. I'm acutely aware that he had similar talent on his side of the ball, but regardless, nothing about his play resembled a guy who could be relied upon if/when his name is called. Better results the following game, but again, against pop warner-level talent and still had a horrible case of happy feet. Arians wants guys who can control and operate within the pocket, and Sims is by far the worst quarterback we've seen do that since Arians took over.

As I've indicated, the calls for Sims are not because they know who Sims is as a quarterback, it's more of an indication of how they feel about Thomas. I could say to many here that I'm going to dig up a random corpse at the cemetery and put him behind center and many of you would say, "he has tremendous potential, he should be on the roster."

This is not me defending Logan Thomas as I feel he has a ways to go before he can be a solid NFL QB, but to pretend like Sims is some benevolent master of the quarterback position is pure folly.

Don't fall for the okie doke.

Matt Shaughnessey is great in his role, and I am a big fan of his, but since his injury last year he has not been the same. Don't get me wrong, he is still a solid player but every time his skills erode a little bit it opens the door for someone else.

1 - Campbell
2 - Rucker
3 - Gunter
4 - X.Williams
5 - Stinson
6 - Mauro
7 - Shaughnessey/Redding/*only keep 6 players.

I think that is how it stands at this moment. Ta'amu has been pretty poor during the preseason games, so I don't see him making the team.

To be fair to Corey Redding I have not really focused on him during games, but then again he has not really stood out as well. I didn't get why they signed him in the first place, but I digress.

Being a fan of Matt Shaughnessey, I would like to see him make the team over Mauro and Redding, but its a close race. We will see.

Stopped reading at trading Stanton. That makes zero sense whatsoever to me.

I don't see Stanton getting traded, either. In fact, I see him being re-upped next year, too, since he's stated he'd be interested in that scenario.

The thing is, I'm with Mitch on this. If the Cardinals could trade him -- they can't and won't -- they should consider it. Everyone on the field knows who's going to get the ball when he's QB; Stanton seems incapable of looking away from his primary receiver.

I think Sims has a ton of potential and should be kept. If you want to complain that he's playing third stringers, yeah, but so what? He's getting better. Can you say the same about Stanton?

I'm disappointed that only four trades are proposed by Mitch Keim. I expect a hell of a lot better effort than that!

cause keim wont make any trade
doesnt want to spend draft picks
and since he got hired as general manager he never made a trade on which were involved 2 players

Say Carson goes down for the season this Sunday. Are You more comfortable having Sims as your starter than Stanton?
