Cardinals $723K OVER the 2013 cap

Cards $723K over the 2013 cap.Don't look for them to be big players in FA. I wonder what moves the make to free up space.

Per whom?

It's pretty easy to get under the cap. Stewart Bradley will be completely gone; that'll save $2.5 million on the 2013 cap.

If Kevin Kolb agrees to a salary reduction, and we don't have to cut him outright, then we'll save another $3-5 million against the cap. Maybe we can force a salary reduction on Adam Snyder.

They were saying on the radio today that the Cards are "up against" the cap. Whether that means near, or over, I don't know. A big-time free agent may be something we don't have an opportunity at this year, but I agree with you that are are plenty of opportunities to reduce the cap hit of certain players based upon crummy performance.

Who would be this "big time free agent"? Are we going to go after Dwight Freeney or someone? I doubt it, but if we were flush with cash, I doubt we'd do that, either.

We are up against the cap. I expect that we'll cut Early Doucet and Stewart Bradley and wait two weeks into free agency and see if we can bring back LSH and Paris Lenon at a discount.

Mike Sando over at the NFC West blog on ESPN reported this per John Clayton.

Either way, it's extremely frustrating. Graves really dug us a hole. I can't even determine which players on this roster are holding onto this cap space (except the obvious, like Fitz/Kolb/Bradley/Campbell).

Hopefully Keim or the new HC can make some tough decisions and give us the space to make a few moves.

I have no idea, nor did I mean to give the impression that there were any. It's way to early to even think about free agents at this point...Hell, they just finished the first round of the playoffs.

But, since you asked...Andy Levitre would be the only rumored name of a possible cut that would perk up my ears.

As I understand it, Graves has always tried to keep the Cardinals up against or near the CAP.

As the team showed last off-season, there are multiple ways of tweaking contracts to create room, and it doesn't automatically necessitate the cutting of a player, although, I imagine there are cuts to come.

I agree but could Levi be switched successfully to another position on the OL were he would perform better?

Heap has been cut; Lenon is a FA; Snyder / Bradley can be adjusted; Lindley / Skelton are a pittance - and Levi's contract is cheap for starting L-T.

CAP room can come from re-doing Kolb, Dockett and signing Rhodes to a new deal, for example.

The way I see it is this team was 5-11. It only means that there is going to be some cuts to some fan favorites. If Horton becomes the HC you can say good-bye to Dockett and maybe Wilson.

heap was cut months ago. Wells could probably get us a low round draft pick. Levi too. Lets not cut for no reason.

Todd Heap, Kevin Kolb, Stewart Bradley, Adam Snyder and Daryn Colledge... all of our "high profile" acquisitions the last two seasons, all questionable signings, all for big money... all on contracts that hurt our cap... and yet some people thought it would be wise to not fire Graves, but just keep him in charge of contracts.

thank God Graves is gone.

Does it matter? There have been years when the Cards were about 30-50 million under the cap and didn't do anything of significance.

No one is going to trade for underperforming Levi with four-years remaining on his contract. Perhaps someone takes a flyer on Wells, but wouldn't count on it.

That cap # is pretty much irrelevant at this point in time.
