Im with kerouac a guy that shys away from contact doesnt sound like a good fit as a KR specialist.

Then he's cut, sent to the practice squad and no harm is done. Its a 7th round pick ... kinda hard to be picky at this point, eh?

I don't think Watkins returns Kicks. They make absolutely no mention of returning abilities on BYU sites.

I think he is being brought in as solely a "deep threat" guy. His rep is that he is lazy. Maybe the thought is that surrounded by Pro Bowlers he'll turn it on and add that deep threat dimension to our offense.

Probably not a special teams player, if he doesn't like contact. But has some speed to go for the long one. Caught long distance passes at BYU and led the Mountain West Conf in receiving his junior year. On the side though, can kick feild goals (did one for over 50 yds) and extra points (50 of 51), per PFW. [Can't tell from PFW, where the kicking was done at, but it could have been in J.C.]

True. But when you have team with WR's like we have I would have taken the flier somewhere else. JMHO. Great draft though so no matter!

I don't think you want a guy who shies away from contact doing your return work. No big deal. It's hard to bust on a 7th rounder.
Shouldn't KR's try and avoid contact? Do Dante Hall or Jerome Mathis try and run over people?

Maybe LeRon McCoy has surpassed him for the 3rd spot.

Highly doubtful.

It's a 7th rounder. Camp fodder. If he excels, good for him and us. If not, no biggie at all.

When in doubt draft speed and hopes it works out. If it doesn't,no big deal.

On face value I hated the pick (i.e. track star who has inconsistent hands and doesn't like contact).

But trying to get inside DG's mind - I think he was looking for someone to line up in a multi-receiver set who can scare the beejesus out of a defensive secondary.

Watkins runs a 4.34 (albeit in a straight line). We don't have anyone else who can do this. I think they're considering Watkins as one more way to take some of the heat off Q and Fitz in a pass pattern.

Provides the same attributes as LeRon McCoy...

I don't follow the reasoning of this pick.

I think could be groomed as a future WR like McCoy. Think they are looking at this a BJ's last lear. Might even be contract year for BJ. As Jeff said could be to scare opposing defences at worst practice squad player with future starting ability.

As someone mentioned earlier it will be hard for us to get receiver UDFA's to come here with all our talent.

This guy has blazing speed and every team can use a deep threat.

The Rams had the same problem getting quality UDFA WR's when they had Holt, Bruce, Hakim, and Proehl. The choice makes some sense. Even if he is practice squad material, he can be helpful on the scout team, playing Curtis and Holt

The one advantage of being an UDFA is being able to pick the team that gives you the best shot. Any Cards fan ought to know that. We have had more UDFA's make the roster than anybody probably.

Dante Hall shys away from contact.... that must mean he is a poor fit as a KR specialist

Nice try Ryan. Dante hall is one of those guys that can afford to because he can turn on a dime he never really has anyone get a good shot on him nor does he need to just plow into the pile at times hes just that good. I would be shocked if this guy has any Dante Hall talent in him.

Actually, the ESPN guy that used to be a general manager was saying that premier UDFAs get calls from multiple teams, and they look and see where the best spot is to stick. Sometimes, he said, they would use the fact that they were playing in Florida (no tax) as an incentive to get a guy into camp. The best UDFAs have to be "recruited" (the guy's word) to come to your club. Just like college.
