Cards Secure Third 2003 Draft Choice
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, June 9, 2003 3:59pm

Tempe, Arizona -— Defensive end Kenny King, the Arizona
Cardinals’ fifth-round (141st overall) selection of the
2002 NFL Draft, has agreed to the terms of a three-year
contract.

The University of Alabama record-holder in the weight
room with a 410-pound power clean, King enjoyed a
banner career as he teamed with Jarret Johnson and
Kindal Moorehead to provide the Crimson Tide one of the
premier defensive lines in the collegiate ranks. In
addition to earning numerous awards for field and class
room performance, the 6–3, 280-pound King recorded 190
total tackles, 11.5 sacks for –79 yards, 26 stops
behind the line of scrimmage, 77 quarterback pressures,
and 6 fumble recoveries in 43 games for ’Bama.

Last year King was awarded Verizon/CoSIDA Academic
District IV all-America notice, becoming the first
Crimson Tide player since Major Ogilvie in 1976 to earn
the honor. Chosen first team all-Southeastern
Conference by the league’s coaches, he played nose
guard, recording 51 tackles (26 solos), 3 sacks for –15
yards, 7 stops for –18 yards, and 17 quarterback
pressures .

King becomes the third member of Arizona’s 2003 NFL
Draft class reach terms. The team previously reached
agreement with Georgia linebacker Tony Gilbert (sixth
round, b, 210th overall) on June 2 and Clarion
offensive tackle Reggie Wells (sixth round, a, 177th
overall) on June 4.

The remaining draftees — wide receiver Bryant Johnson
(first round-a, Penn State), defensive end Calvin Pace
(first round-b, Wake Forest), wide receiver Anquan
Boldin (second round, Florida State), and linebacker
Gerald Hayes (third round, Pittsburgh) — along with
Gilbert, Wells, and King are participating in the
team’s four-day mini-camp this week.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we have the most signed draft choices of any NFL team thus far, no?

That's what I think too..... I definitely think we are being proactive this year, could it be we have learned from our past mistakes??? Is this too much to hope for???

Rod Graves said last week that they would be targeting the end of this month for Boldin and that would leave July for the first rounders.

I'm not trying to be a stick in the mud but, last year we signed our late rounders pretty quickly as well. I think that Rod Graves will trying very hard to get everyone signed before Training Camp.
I hope that he succeeds.

You're correct earthsci. This isn't unprecedented. Of course, it's much better than the old days when we had hard times signing even our late round picks. I'll never forget the sixth rounder that told the Cards to shove their offer and went back to school. (Mike Hold)

Last year, I remember we had only Bryant left to sign and two teams had nobody signed, Dallas and Atlanta. There was discussion on this board about who'd be first to get all their picks in of the three, and we were last by a long shot.

If both Pace and Johnson on not on the field by Day 1 of camp, that'll be tough to swallow. Hopefully, the agents will work very hard with the Cards to get it done.

I do hope we have the number #1's in on time...If we don't the longer it takes the less likely they are to help the team. They need to be there from day 1. I say.... find out what #17 & #18 made last year.... and give them whatever the typical increase is year over year and be done with it......

If it was only that easy. Last year's deals at #17 and #18:

#17 Buchanon: Five years, 7 million, escalators up to 12.2mil total.

#18 Duckett: Seven years, 1.5 mil avg., voidable to five.

We all know what the Cards think about escalators and voidables. We'll see.

King 72. Sounds like the perfect jersey for me.

I was born in 72. If he left or didn't pan out, it would still fit.

I always find it veryirritating teams...especially the Cards and their penchant for holdouts...waiting until July, with limited rookie pool money, to sign the bigger money draft picks. They should be targeting everyone signed by end of June and really set a precedent.

I am unimpressed at this point with the signings because, like earthsci said, the Cards have moved on lower round picks fast previously. The real proof will be Graves getting the 2 first rounders in camp on time. If that doesn't happen, it will have been another case of one step forward 2 steps back.

Don't mean to be a pessimist but the Cards have been applauded the last 3 years for signing the most draft choices in June (usually rounds 4-7) and then still ending up being one of the last teams to sign their top guys. Its easy to sign these low round guys-no escalator clauses, bells and whistles, just boring, simple 3 year deals which are right in line with the Cardinals way of thinking.

I'll be impressed and convinced times are changing if both Bryant Johnson and Calvin Pace are on the bus come July 25th when the team heads to Flagstaff. I'm sorry, but this sounds too similar to other "progressive" moves by the Cardinals.

But aren't they already in camp on time? Doesn't the protection of the injury waiver that both Jonhson and Pace signed cover training camp? If so, doesn't that allow Graves to move at the pace that has been mentioned (beginning negotiations in "hardcore" in July) with out the fear of a hold out?

Umm....what he said. They are in camp practicing with the rest of the team, learning the playbook and getting in shape. We're already off to a better start. Hip hip hooray!

The protection waiver doesn't cover training camps guys. It covers mini camps.
