I know. I'll probably get bashed for ripping on the organization. But I guy has to vent somewhere, right?

Here's the deal. My son goes to a small Christian school here in the Valley. And for the past few years they have been having a charity auction to help keep the school running and raise funds for a new gym/multi-purpose building that they can use for assemblies, basketball games (the boys team won the championship for the second year straight), and a place that the kids can have to get out of the sun.

Well somehow, I get assigned the task of putting together something that men would be willing to bid on, and I come up with the idea of a Valley sports team package. So, I go through the making of the phone calls. Filling out the forms. Getting tax ID numbers and non-profit info for all the teams in the Valley.

Anyway, the auction is coming up and I need to see who would be willing to donate to the cause. The Diamondbacks review any requests, and send out items 3 weeks prior to the event. They say they will definitely be participating. Cool. The Suns have the same procedure. OK, cool. The Rattlers have sent tickets to the school already. Cool again. The Coyotes want to really get involved, and have a pep rally at the school, have a player do a motivational speech, and let the kids set something up on the concourse at Glendale Stadium to try and raise funds at a game. Along with some memorabilia. Very cool.

And now the charitable organization known as the Cardinals.... I call to see if they got the paperwork, and would they be willing to donate. I get transferred to the woman in charge of this sort of request, and get told that yes they are more than willing to help and that they already have the package put together. So I tell her that my wife is coming down to pick our new seats, (yesterday), and she says great, have her come by my office and pick up the items. So my wife spends 3K on season tickets. Goes to the lady's office. And gets told that the lady has no idea what she is talking about. Well, while on the phone, I was told to bring a copy of the request just in case. My wife presents the copy. The lady says, "Oh yes, now I remember." Goes to a closet, and hands my wife a bag.

A t-shirt and a floppy hat.

Now most of you will probably say, "Hey at least they gave you something." But after seeing what the other teams are willing to do. And hearing time and again that the Cardinals are so into giving to the community, caring about schools and sending the right message to kids. I am more than a little disappointed. I mean they at least could of had the guy at the ticket counter sign the hat. Something that would show that they really do care about a struggling small school. Something.

I guess I just expected more. After backing this team year after year, through thick and thin. Being ridiculed for being a fan. I just expected more. Well this long time fan has just one more thing to say...

Cardinals Charities...yeah right.

Actually they were doing you a favor and saving the awkward moment at the auction when nobody bids on the Cardinals stuff.

Try the Q81 foundation (Anquan Boldin's charity). They have been more than generous with charitable donations in the past.

Thanks. I never thought of that.

Nothing New to Cardinals Fans in Tucson

Try living in Tucson and getting anything from the Cardinals for a charity auction. Seems once they got the votes they needed for the new stadium the team/ownership forgot about Tucson unless you consider a once a year stop by two players a great recruiting tool.

I have tried a couple of times to get items and finally gave up. The first time was when the Cardinals did the Ladies Football Clinic in Tucson several years ago (this was all prior to the stadium vote). My wife assists with a charity golf tournament for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Organization in Tucson. This is their biggest fund raiser. My wife had met Pat Tankersley at the Ladies football clinic and dealt directly with her. She sent up all the required paperwork, made phone calls and in the end nothing arrived. Luckily the Diamondbacks, Sidewinders and the UofA basketball team came through along with numerous local business.

The final time was when we started a new football organization in Tucson. Start up costs were around $40,000 plus with new equipment, uniforms, etc.. We also held a charity auction/dinner and made several attempts to get any item from the Cardinals. This included phone calls, letters on our Team's letterhead with our non-profit tax ID number, and delivering a letter in person. Once again, nothing.

I have also been a season ticket holder for 11 years. We have given up and now deal with other football and baseball organization around the country.

I will say the Cardinals do donate to several large Charities so I cannot completely rip them. This is just personal frustration in dealing with the team.

You should have asked for your money back on the seats. I would have. Not like there is going to be a sell out and you have to get on a waiting list.

I used to be in the advertising business before I got into education. I found that in situations like these it's useful to say "We do appreciate your generosity, but I feel that I should tell you the Suns, Rattlers, and Diamondbacks donated tickets, and the Coyotes sent a player to the school for a pep-rally. Is there another department of the Cardinals organization, or a specific player, I can talk with?"

Usually organizations want to be on the same tier as their competition. Could be this lady had no clue what the other teams were donating.

Not trying to make light notes in a down situation, but my level of respect for the Phoenix Coyote organization went up about 10 fold by reading this post. Talk about going above and beyond the call of duty. That's really cool.

Sorry to hear about your shorthanded dealings with the Cardinals bro. Seems like they are so wrapped up in getting new asses in to the seats in Glendale that they've almost forgot the loyal fans who stuck by them through thick and thin. I'd double check and make sure it's not a Phoenix Cardinal shirt while your at it :p

I know for a fact that the team gets dozens of requests ever week for this or that. If you are looking for grant money you need to fill out the proper paperwork and get it into the Cards prior to a listed date. They can't give to everyone. I've known Pat Tankersley for many years and she is as good as they come, with a huge heart. If it can be done she will do it! There is also the NFL grant program for kids sports, D-back charities, APS, TSA, Thunderbirds and more that if they can fit it into the budget and if it deams worthy they will try to do the right thing. I'm sorry you didn't get what you expected.

When asking be specific about what your needs are. If it's money say how much. If others are helping your cause mention the partnerships. It's hard when you know you have something very worthy and get turned down. Example I'yve bought Nike shows for ever. I'm trying to help a soccer league that is in a very poor part of our valley. These children have nothing. I thought hey NIKE for shoes for these kids. Without explanation they just say they could not do this at this time. Hey, you got to move on. Good luck, don't hate the Cards they do what they can do and more.

I've had bad experiences with their front office staff as well. Being a season ticket holder made no difference whatsoever. It's like they don't care.

I have solicited prize donations in the past for scholarship fundraisers at work and am in the process of doing it again for a golf tournament to honor my uncle.

Some pro teams in the Philly are good, like the Flyers who send autographed pucks and sticks, and the Camden Riversharks (minor league ball) who send four free tickets. Some are okay, like the Sixers who send an autographed photo (NEVER of AI, though), the Soul (photo autographed by the team and owner Jon Bon Jovi). And some are bad, like the Phillies who, along with not being committed to winning, are not committed to helping the community. The Eagles usually send a t-shirt signed by a player (Chad Lewis and Todd Stinkston).

Of course, this is an auction that you are dealing with so you would think they could have done a little better. Heck, get one of the players to sign the shirt or something.

One question. Did you send your request to a particular person there and, if so, are you sure it was the right person to send it to? Maybe the letter got misdirected. I dunno.

You go through Media Relations for donations, no?

If so, I can honestly say I'm shocked. I've had a few Cardinals on the radio show I used to host, and the Media Relations folks went well above the call of duty to help.

Yep, you cant give something to everyone all the time.

The Cards are still one of the most charitible NFL teams in the league in Time and Money. I have been on the recieving end of some of that charity as well in a few things I have helped run in the past.

Sorry you didn't get what you expected...

BUT, I think that your rant misses the whole point of charity. To take a broad brush, ad hominem attack on the Cardinal organization is not very charitable is it?

Being involved in your son's school by pursuing opportunities for fund raising is commendable, I applaud you for that. Being grateful for the organizations that helped you is proper and it is wonderful that they were so generous. Venting on a message board and impugning the Cardinals and the organization's commitment to charities is a bit out of line IMO.

Your son is attending a small (your description) Christian school that, apparently, needs more funds than the tuitition they charge (I'm assuming you pay tuition for your son to attend there). They have a successful basketball program, which is great, so I'm also assuming that the school has a pretty good student population to support that. While not intending to disregard the need for funds your son's school may require, perhaps it was simply that the Cardinals give elsewhere and they draw the line at a different spot than the other sports teams. You may think that is wrong, that your solicitation was disrespected, but that is not the issue.

I don't know if you are a Christian or not, but I think the better road to travel is the high road. Be thankful for what you get in your solicitations, bless those who bless you, no matter how great or how small the giving was. Wouldn't that be what Jesus would do?

Please, please, please, don't highjack this thread into a theological debate, that wasn't my intention. I just wanted to say that, while I understand your disappointment, I think you were a bit unfair to the Cardinal organization by implying that they AREN'T a charitable one. You probably don't have any idea how much money the give to needy people or organizations.

I hope and pray that your auction raises all that your son's school needs to build the gym.

Blessings!

It's no secret that the Cardinals have been big sponsors to some of the Catholic schools in the Valley. And, on some of the reservations. Since that's the church of the Bidwills, that is the reason for the emphasis of their charity.

The team is entitled to give as much or as little as it wants, but considering that they'll probably sell about 20,000 season tickets next year I find it hard to believe they couldn't throw a season ticket package at any (legitimate, within reason) chartiable organization that wants one.

The tax benefits alone, even if one chooses to look cynically at this, would be worth it.
