1. It's fascinating to think of how Steve Keim, with a mere six picks going in, is going to work this draft---a draft that Bruce Arians deems as "the deepest draft in years."

The challenge for Keim will be how he can manage to acquire extra picks in a draft where most teams will want to do the same.

At the same time, it appears (on the surface anyway) the Cardinals will be heading into the draft seeking to acquire starters at RT and SS---which will make it all the more difficult to trade down if starting caliber prospects are sitting right there when the Cardinals are on the clock.

The other significant challenge is that going into the draft, the chances seem likely that the Cardinals will receive the worst draft grade in the NFC West.

The Rams have 11 picks---2 1st rounders (including the #2 pick) and 4 of the first 75. Their first pick (Clowney, Robinson, Mack, Matthews or Watkins) is very likely going to be a future All-Pro.

The 49ers also have 11 picks---6 of the first 100 picks and whenever that is the case they have the flexibility to move up to get players they like and to draft early on at positions (like QB) that with fewer picks they wouldn't have the luxury of taking.

The Seahawks may only have 7 picks (no 3rd rounder---Percy Harvin trade)---but you just know right now John Schneider is going to make out like a thief in the night. Chances are, when all the picks have been made, as Cardinals' fans we look at our draft and then Seattle's, we might prefer theirs to our own, particularly if they get better pass rushers and skill players.

2. Because Keim is looking to draft starters and impact players---the possibility of moving up increases---don't be surprised if he moves up in round 1 and then tries to move down twice or more times later in the draft.

Who might Keim target as a player to move up and take?

Realistically, he probably doesn't have a shot at moving into the top ten, unless he offers #20, #52 and a 2015 1st round pick. Keim isn't going to do that unless it is for a QB...and in this draft there is no sure-fire franchise QB.

But, to move into the 11-16 range and have to give up the #20 and #84 picks---there are a couple of players who might be in play---such as:

OLB Anthony Barr, UCLA
T Jake Matthews, Texas A&M
DE Aaron Donald, Pittsburgh

3. Players that could quite possibly make Keim want to stay at #20:

Any of the above three (Barr, Matthews, Donald)

T Zach Martin, Notre Dame
T Taylor Lewan, Michigan
S Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Alabama
S Calvin Pryor, Louisville
WR Brandin Cooks, Oregon St.
WR Marquis Lee, USC
WR Odell Beckham, LSU
DE Dee Ford, Alabama
DE Kony Ealy, Missouri
LB C.J. Mosely, Alabama
LB Ryan Shazier, Ohio St.
CB Darqueze Dennard, Michigan St.
CB Jason Verrett, TCU
DT Tommy Jernigan, Florida St.
DT Louis Nix, Notre Dame
DT RaShede Hageman, Minnesota

4. Most likely Keim trades back at #20 because look at the list above---Keim can trade back as many as 10-14 spots and still get a first round talent.

5. While we have every reason to believe that the early picks will include a RT and SS---Keim likely has players in rounds 3-5 at those spots that he feels can compete right away, because there are several positions that Keim wants to bolster sooner rather than later, because of the following starters who may not be on the roster a year or two from now:

QB Palmer
WR Fitzgerald
TE Carlson, Housler
NT Williams
DE Dockett
ILB Inside depth
OLB Abraham
CB Cromartie
K Feely

Therefore, it shouldn't be a total surprise if Keim hops on BPA early at one or more of these positions---Keim will be true to his board.

6. It wouldn't be surprising either because of the June 1st cap relief the Cardinals will get that Keim already has contract agreements with T Eric Winston, ILB Larry Foote and quite possibly with a S like Major Wright. This is another reason why it shouldn't be too surprising if Keim doesn't target positions of perceived need early in the draft---or, in a case or two, not at all.

In Winston's case---could you really imagine Keim starting 3 players on the offensive line who have never started an NFL game before? At least, there had better be some veteran depth.

This draft is one I definitely excited about. We addressed needs in FA so we can take the best player available at #20. Who knows somebody like Cleveland could trade up with us and we get more picks for it.

Cannot wait for the draft.

First draft I can remember that we are not desperate for a need pick. This should be a fun draft.

Just read a PFT post about how Eric Winston wants to sign with a team before the draft---which completely rules out my theory that he and Keim had a wink-wink post-draft agreement.

Here's the thing:

From what BA&SK have said about Bobby Massie and Bradley Sowell---it seems more than clear that neither of those players are a fit for what BA&SK want at the starting RT.

What's a little mind-boggling, however...

Let's say they draft RT Jack Mewhort, for example...are the Cardinals really going to start three young, first-year starters (Cooper, Watford, Mewhort) on the offensive line?

On defense, with a potential D-Wash suspension, and with Honey Badger likely to start the season on the PUP list...the early part of the Cardinals' season, with three first-year starters on the o-line and what could be two first-year starters at ILB (Minter, TBD) and a first-year starter at SS, is going to be particularly challenging. The acquisitions are going to have to be real good if the Cardinals hope to avoid the slow start they incurred last year.

Pretty much agree with everything you posted. I do doubt that any receiver with be considered in rd 1 unless their name is Watkins or Cooks. No way Watkins falls to us and I doubt SK will pick Cooks but if he does pick a WR in rd 1 then we all know Fitz will be moving on.

I'm betting on SK trading down but that might just be because that's what I want.

No need for a host of machinations IMO.

Pick Martin at #20 and make sure, even if you have to move up, to pick Bucannon in the second.

EXCELLENT POINTS, MITCH (as always)

The GREATEST thing to me in all this is that we FINALLY have a competent fr/o who understand the process, big picture, etc. (I still shudder at the mere mention of the name...GEORGE BOONE (from the old St. Louis days).

I DON"T have to sit there agonizing anymore for a 1/2 hr., scared stiff about what the Cardinals might do.

There is absolutely NO fear or anticipation of dread when the commisioner slowly makes his way towards the microphone. It has been replaced with great excitement and genuine anticipation.

It's been a long time since the 1st words out of my mouth after our selection were....WHAT THE!?!? HOW CAN THEY...

GO CARDS!
EXPECTING (and firmly believing) GOOD THINGS ARE COMING OUR WAY!

Mark in SC :) Where it's a very nice 70 sunshine-y degrees.

My dad's in snow-buried CT.

I don't agree with you theory on drafting. So you want to take Martin, even though we may pass on a better player, and then potentially give up a third to move up in the second? Essentially, take 2 NEED picks with our first 3 rounds of picks instead of taking 3 best players? This has targeting written all over it. That approach is what got us Levi Brown.

Mitch is correct, we could easily take players in the first two rounds who are intended to start for a player who won't be on the roster in 2 years (Dockett, Abraham, Housler). The draft is never about just next year. Big Picture is critical. I do not agree with Mitch about taking a WR there, unless it is so obvious like Watkins - which is not happening.

Everybody assumes Watford is going to beat out Fanaika. You just don`t know for sure.IF Cards feel a Zack Martin at #20 or Mewhort in RD 2 fits then go with it.Whoever is drafted in RD 1 has to be a starter or at least a rotation (Ealy at DE for example).Cards simply cannot mess this draft up.Too many needs and not enough draft picks.

I doubt very much that Keim cares at all about post-draft grades, and cares even less about those grades in comparison to the rest of the division.

Big picture was that two needs were identified and I selected two players who fit the bill and are not reaches.

I think, however, that we'll probably add a vet O-lineman (Winston) before the draft and make Martin as "BPA at a position of need" moot.

rather than a host of trading back I would almost prefer to see the Cards trade up....I would be fine walking away from this draft with only three players if all were immediate contributors as well as building blocks for our future.....hell, maybe even trade Fitz to the Raiders on draft day for their second and third....

A couple thoughts...

1-I can't see Keim trading up. I just can't.

2-IMO, it is Jake Matthews, Khalil Mack, Anthony Barr, Aaron Donald, Justin Gilbert, Hasean Clinton-Dix, Calvin Pryor or trade back. Maybe Kony Ealy but the more I watch, the more I wonder if he is too much of a project at #20.

3-Dark horse trade down players, Brandon Thomas, Kony Ealy, Kyle Fuller, Jimmie Ward and Deone Bucannon.

Mitch, the draft is very deep and we'll probably select about 15 players in the "eighth" round. And two or three of the eighth rounders will probably make the team.

Agreed, so many people act like the perceived grade of a team's draft defines how good the team WILL be. I can also understand getting value in a draft but it cracks me up when people play a game with grading and who got the best value. If a team drafts a player far earlier than the media and other teams have that player graded but that player turns out to be a stud... who freaking cares in hindsight. Lastly, how do we know the Cardinals do not see a QB in this draft that they feel can be a franchise QB, they have more information to go off of then us or even the media

Well, sure in hindsight who cares. But as fans we want to see our team lauded in the media.

Doesn't it tick you off that there are never any highlights of Cards seasons? You know it isn't fun to read how our FO folks are a bunch of idiots for drafting who they did. Wasn't it a blast reading all the favorable articles about the Cardinals 2008/2009? It sure was for me.

Agree! He has just six picks. It's a deep draft. Cardinals aren't one player away.

Trading up makes some sense for the Niners or Browns, who are loaded with picks. It doesn't make sense to the Cardinals IMO.

The Ravens had Buchanon visit them Thursday and Friday. They must like

him. Hope they dont take him before we can get to him.

To me, it seems more and more likely the BPA at 20 is going top be a CB. Guys like Denard(not a big fan), Roby and Fuller could all be there at 20.

Torn between a CB or DE to take at 20. I like Gilbert but he will be long gone. Dennard would be nice but I think they will go DE with Kone Ealy from my alma mater MIZZOU.

Ealy is a bit of a project for an OLB. And Dockett won't be replaced by him next year AT LEAST. Find Dockett's eventualy replacement in Rd's 2-4. In the mean time you also have Rucker and Shaughnessey who can fill in if need be.

Of who should/might be available I'd pick in order

1-Dennard/Gilbert
2-Pryor
3-Martin
4-Lee/Cooks
5-Ford
6-Ealy
7-Shazier

If your grades are similar on all, trade down a few spots and p/u an extra 3rd.
