Then he'd sign a minimum-salary contract with the Jets. That's not going to happen, though, is it?

It's not really about money, it's about value. Do you think that the difference between Drew Brees making $12 million and $15 million per year on his new contract is going to change the fate of him and his family? Of course not. Nor did however we sweetened the contract offer to Warner four years ago after he visited San Francisco.

I respect that there are fans like you who still believe that the #1 priority for professional athletes is winning or because they like being a member of a team or because they like to play with Fitz or whatever. But I've learned too much about the business of sports to believe that those are anything but the most marginal concerns.

Yep. Manning has an idea of where he wants to go, and will leverage those teams against each other to get the best possible contract with the team that gives a good chance to win.

Oh, and I would say the Texans are his best chance to win if it was his only concern.

The Texans job would be sweet in so many ways. The person who really gets screwed on this is Matt Schaub. If Houston is going to pursue Manning, what leverage does Schaub have to get a better deal?

Of course, if Houston waits on Schaub, Washington's going to be right there waiting to scoop him up at the opening of free agency.

But I don't think that Houston's really looking at Manning, and I don't know if Kubiak's system is flexible enough to accommodate him.

Agreed, it's the same reason I don't see Manning going to Wash, both systems are set up for mobile QBs and Manning just isn't able to roll out and bootleg like he used to.

I don't know. Matt Schaub isn't plus-mobility. It's a virtue for those QBs, but I don't know if it's an essential component. If Kubiak and the Shanahans can deal with John Elway once his speed had left him, or Joe Montana in Mike Shanhan's case, I bet the could find a way to use Manning's skill set.

I haven't watched a Colts game in a while--isn't their rushing game still build around the zone stretch play? Manning's ability handling the football would probably buy him the time that age has stolen from his legs.

I think the question is more about schematic flexibility. I don't think that Manning wants to learn an entirely new offense; he'd like to run his system that he's comfortable with. I don't think he wants to go into the situation like Brett Favre went through in New York.

Yes, the Colts did, and Manning had publically commented on how it has become more difficult for him to make those handoffs as he has gotten older. Keep in mind, even in the end, Elway was a very good athlete.

As far a scheme flexability goes, I believe it is more important for a player like Manning to have gameplan input and flexability, over scheme input and flexability. He wants to have the freedom to adjust how the offense attacks the defense throughout the game rather than be pigeonholed into a play calling script that the head coach and offensive coordinator have come up with. When a player has Manning's experience, he has a better idea of what he can do to exploit the defense than the offensive coordinator will when working with him for the first time.

Wolf was saying that they wouldn't have any cap hit to cut Kolb...not sure how that was coming about.

doesn't make sense

If he said that, he's dead wrong. If the Cards keep Kolb, he stays at $10 mill this year. If we cut him, we pay $2 mill for every remaining season he has left (4) which put's his cut cost at $8 mill.

Are those in each year, or in a lump (cap wise?)

Pay him the $8 mill all at once

I totally might be wrong....but the 8 million (has already been paid) and thus what happens is the signing bonus is divided for the remaining years, but isn't the hit capped at two years?

So if it's 2+2+2+2 = 8 million pro rated...you only have 2+2+0+0 count against the cap...because you only take a 'hit' for two years maximum. The roster bonus only factors into the cap when it's paid. (but beforehand it's projected in there).

Things might have changed but I could of sworn it was something like that a few years ago.

Here is the answer to that question:

The bonus is pushed to another year per the CBA, so it's basically lots of free cap money this season.

But Wolf was still wrong in saying no cap hit... we will still have 2 million hit this year and all we are doing just pushing the bulk of the hit out to next year.

Sure, but he was mostly right.

As opposed to mostly wrong, which is per usual.
