One thing is for sure... the board should not be complaining about Cards not being active in FA and on draft day... they are trying everything to stay competitive. The trading and moves on the three draft days by Cards gave me headaches :)

I really like the signing.

He provides some leadership to the O-Line

Plus he is a great locker room guy.

All for pretty cheap considering the last contract he signed.

My memory may be playing tricks on me, but wasn't Oliver Ross originally brought in by Dennis Green and inherited by Wiz & Russ?

Yes, and then he was brought back in last May by Whis and Grimm.

He played four years for the Steelers before coming here in 2005, and people said the same things about Ross when he was signed as they're saying now about Faneca.

The bright side is that Faneca was actually good, and Ross was pretty much always a bum.

Schefter tweeted it, story up soon on sports.ktar.com

EDIT: It's a one year deal, by the way.

I think this significantly improves out team. Porter and now Faneca plus our new big boy in the middle. I did not think this would happen. Not a typical Cardinal move. 4 or 5 years ago a guy like Faneca and Porter would not have even considered our team. I think everything now hinges on the QB. Matt has the horses and has had all the tutoring any QB could hope for. It is now up to him to become a star or a stooge. I pray he is the guy we all went crazy over when we drafted him.

Im not a fan of this move as i dont see him as a real upgrade over anything we already have. The only way it would make sense if they believe Lutui isnt resigning. The guy allowed 8 sacks last season and though are guys werent great last season none of them was that bad. Reggie Wells no matter how bad he looked at times i dont think was charged with any sack and if Lutui resigns as everyone expects he'd still be a better guard imho then Faneca, plus you have potential break out rookies in Keith and Johnson as a well as good vet back up in Bridges. You dont replace potential turnstiles with a more open turnstile.

Faneca has been an all pro several times I think. I don't think he is to old or lost that much. We are fortunate to get a guy who has been there and done that. Sort of like a Kurt signing. Everyone thought the old guy was half dead and crippled.

So what happens if Lutui does not sign his tender? Can the Cardinals just keep his rights until his contract expires or does he become a FA when the final roster cut is made. This does not make much sense for Lutui not to sign unless he hopes to become a FA.

What does this guy want anyway? I have not followed his problems with the Cards. How can any guy who makes millions of dollars a year in his 20's be so dissatisfied with life. I was making car payments on a used car when I was his age and thought life was good as a Lieutenant in the Air Force.

thank you for your service...lobo cpl. usmc ret.....anyway actions speak louder than words.....don't be surprised if he gets his walking papers...coach w does not use the media to plead his case something like coach bb up in new england...they just get rid of "the problems" as there is talent lined up for every job. why do you think thomas just got cut from new england??? don't "fool with mother nature"

Good Article on the State of CARDINALS and Faneca move.Nothing is set in stone yet. Thanks again Jets.

Great article Doug----thanks, I especially like the part where they credit him with preparing Nick Mangold, and D'Brickashaw Ferguson for the Pro-Bowl appearances. He should be instrumental in doing the same thing here with our O-linemen. It will be like having a player/coach on the field with them giving lessons in technique and attitude. :D

Probably the best part about this signing, (aside from the Jets footing most of the bill), is that we now have an attitude adjuster on the O-line. We have Wilson and Porter on the D, and now Faneca on the O. This has been much needed here. Running the ball is an attitude, and we haven't had that yet. Faneca brings attitude, technique, and experience and confidence to this line, (ALL OF WHICH WERE SORELY NEEDED). Attitude, Technique, and Experience breed confidence, and CONFIDENCE is the name of the game.

He's been to nine straight pro bowls? Wow!

That's impressive but once an offensive lineman gets selected to the pro bowl don't they go back almost every year because the voters don't know the names of any other linemen?

:D

all good points....i look at as an additional "investment" in matt. the f/o and our field generals are doing everything possible to make it happen. in a previous post when infor started to trickle that cards might be interested in faneca i said grimm can tell in 15 minutes of looking at film if he is still a player....in hindsight i would say he did in five minutes on you tube!! and one phone call with a four word question....ya' still have it??

Why would anyone be upset if this meant Wells was let go. The guy has had 1 decent, mediocre year in his entire career. Graves should have let Buffalo have him when they wanted him. I always found it hard to comprehend why, back in the day, people always liked Wells over Big. There was no contest who the better OL was but Wells got all the love. Two years ago was the only time he's been a servicable OL. I'd love to see a run blocking OL of Brown, Faneca, Hadnot/Sendlein, Lutui(needs to be re-signed to a long term deal) ,and Keith. Wells, Bridges, and Johnson can be kept as reserves.
I have never liked Wells much. We as long as he has been here we have struggled to run the ball. I think he is a big reason why. 2 years ago he had a very good year. That is all.

Nick Mangold "disappointed" by departure of Alan Faneca

Posted by Mike Florio on April 28, 2010 10:23 PM ET

Somewhat lost in the arrival of multiple big-name players in New York has been the departure of multiple others. To date, three key pieces of the offensive puzzle have been put out to pasture: running back Thomas Jones, running back Leon Washington, and guard Alan Faneca.

After Jones was cut, players reportedly were upset. In the wake of Faneca's departure, center Nick Mangold has spoken out.

"Obviously, I am disappointed in it," Mangold told WFAN on Wednesday, according to Justin Terranova of the New York Post. "He's a great mentor and teacher for me, but at the same time you know it's a business and the powers that be decided it was time to move on. And you get over it.
"The first day back was a little difficult not seeing the guy you look for in the locker room for the last two years sitting there, staring back at you. The second day it gets a little easier and then you move on. . . . [It hurts] the offensive line because you lose a brother in battle, it kind of hit home a little bit."

Left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson reportedly was more succinct in a Twitter posting that he has since deleted: "Whhhhyyyyyyy????" (Maybe he actually had been clubbed in the leg by a masked intruder.)

– No shock, but even though coach Ken Whisenhunt pointed out Faneca can play other positions, Grimm said the newcomer will definitely play guard.

– Interestingly, Grimm was throwing out some possibilities out there and mentioned Reggie Wells playing tackle. With Faneca on board, it sounds like Wells could be in the right tackle mix with Brandon Keith and Jeremy Bridges.

Ha! A Nancy Kerrigan reference out of nowhere.
