Tue, 6 Jun 2006 07:10:13 -0700

Mike Bires, of the Beaver County Times Allegheny Times, reports free agent CB Ty Law (Jets) called off an appearance at a local charity golf tournament because he is reportedly in contract negotiations with two teams. The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly one of the two teams his agent is in negotiations with.

If that is true it would be awesome. Not sure I believe it though. Also if it is true it means they are getting very close to a decision for him to call off an appearnace like that IMO.

Yeah, I have a tough time believing it also when he thinks he is worth 10+ mil. I just can't see AZ shelling that sort of money out at this point or fitting it under the cap.

Mike Bires, of the Beaver County Times Allegheny Times, reports

"17 year old Becky Mendelson wrote in the George Washington High Newspaper that her friend Tommy knew somebody who's dad was a friend of the pool man for Ty Law. Becky claims her sources told her that Ty will sign with Arizona."

To make a run at Ty Law is akin to saying we are one player away from competing for a SB berth.....which is kool aide thinking personified.

With so many contracts coming up for renegotiation, spending a ton of money on Law is foolhardy.

Just curious, who out there has $10M to spend on Law?

I think his price is much lower now.

It really depends on how that ton of money is spread out. It also depends on who might be cut to make room for him causing no money to be lost in the cap. If Law can be a playmaker with Rolle, Green, Macklin, Ried et al we could have the makings of a good to great corner/safety group. Of course there is the monster man named Wilson.

A five year contract, which allows the team to initially amortize the 10m. bonus over the length of the contact, plus a relatively small salary over the period, is one way that it could be done, I imagine. Our present top 53 salaries is not static. The only total that matters is that which is filed with the league prior to the season opening. Both cuts and re-negotiation are still available to the team as a means of managing the addition of Law.

I understand this......but it also means that we'd have dead money on the books after his playing days are over (two years?) and that isn't healthy.

I'm not for renting players.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw Ty pass-out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

:raccoon: The reporter, Mike Bires was a college roomate of mine. He also happened to be the other halfback on the Hopewell High School football team that featured Tony Dorsett. His high school/college nickname, (no kidding)... OJ!

Having this type of "dead money" on the books is part of the consideration, no doubt. If management thinks that the "risk-reward" is worth it, then I'm for it. One home playoff game pays for it, no problem.

Have your fun guys but Mike Bires has been a reporter covering sports in the Pittsburgh metro area for nearly 30 years. He covers the Pittsburgh pro scene as well as local sports. The Beaver County Times is a significant news daily in the Pittsburgh metro area...

Mike is at the very least as credible as any of the Phoenix metro reporters.

I hear you, I didn't wish to overstate the case. :)

But if Kent Somers or Darren Urban, reported the same as what Mike Bires did it wouldn't be getting the same type of ridicule in this thread.

I have no problem with the ridicule; just guys having fun. But I do know Mike and I just wanted to clarify the source of the report as legitimate.

Fighting for the Law: Two teams vie for star cornerback

06/06/2006

Veteran NFL cornerback Ty Law may soon be signing a new contract.

Law, an Aliquippa native who played for the New York Jets last season, was supposed to play Monday in the 14th annual Tony Dorsett/McGuire Memorial Celebrity Golf Classic at Treesdale Golf & Country Club.

But Law called tournament organizers Sunday night informing them that he'd regrettably have to cancel. Law's agent, it seems, is close to negotiating a new deal, possibly with the New England Patriots or the Arizona Cardinals.

Law played the first 10 seasons of his pro career with the Patriots and played in the Pats' Super Bowl wins in 2001 and '03. He was injured (foot) for New England's Super Bowl championship in '04.

"Ty would have been here if he could," said Dorsett, the Hopewell native and Hall of Fame running back. "But he had business to take care of. We understand."
