First of all his scource is not an official scource. Just some who supposedly has contractual data. It is an outside scource not linked to the NFL or NFLPA.

That paper got their numbers from a little over a week ago, and they are just now putting out the article after the writter did his research.

It does not include a few of the RFA's and EFA's that have finally sisnged their contracts, Wells contract, PS pool, and the rookie pool.

Also, let's not forget, the team will leave extra money available at the start of the season to "extend" existing contracts throughout the year.

Doubt Graves will save money on that account this season. Most likely player to get a new deal is BIG and giving him a new deal would clear at least $2M under the cap. The only other candidate is Dockett.

Don't forget Dansby. I think he's the only player we might extend that would eat up space. As you say, Big will actually save us money. I doubt Dockett gets extended; he needs to prove he can stay healthy and contribute. Granted, last season he tried to play injured, but this is contract stuff, where it's a 'what have you done for me lately' world.

Dansby was the 33rd overall pick, so it's not like he's playing for peanuts. I doubt he'll get extented in the middle of his 3rd season. Maybe next off-season, but not during this season IMO.

If the team beleives in Dansby and/or Dockett -- now is the perfect time to extend them --

from the players standpoint-- they settle for a little less than "market" for tearing up the last two years of their rookie deals.

For the Cards, they lock up long term two good young defensive players. I would go for it.

Dansby has the same issue as Dockett though, better player, but possibly chronic problems with his knees. his extension is not set in stone although it probably will happen.

My guess has always been that the owners would hold back around 10 mil to help cover new startup expenses. This is nothing new for the organization. You could have signed one or two good lineman that might have made a significant difference with that kind of money.

Enough John, you play the same tape continuously. "The Cardinals Cheap, Bidwill won't spend the money'

Who were these 2 linemen you wanted to sign, how much would they have cost

You may be right if they were actually holding back 10 Mill. Of which they are not.

So your point has no basis what so ever.

And who are these 2 magical OL everyone keeps speaking of.

Bentley who wasnt about to leave his home town of cleveland without a deal done.

Hutch the 10 Million dollar man.

Runyan who stated the whole time his only choices were the Jets or Philly bo matter what the money was.

Ashworth, the guy who was a backup last year and still a backup today.

Neal who took a pay cut to stay with NE.

Kosier who we tried to bring in but signed with Dallas a day earlier.

Fabini - the 33 year old who had a horrible season last year worse then Ross.

Seriously who is this OL that everyone speaks of that we missed out on. This OL FA class this year was completely horrible.

We're talking about the player, who's in his 13th season and was close to being benched last season and yet got $4M a year from the 49'ers, right?

Maybe he could be another Ray Brown who, after his 12th season in the NFL, started another 110 games!

Ray was drafted by the Cardinals in 1986 and just retired this Spring.

I think there was a thread about it back in March. It was news because I don't think anyone else had been in the league as long as Brown.

I wasn't saying I wanted him I was just listing another player in the FA list...... But I think more than a few people might have been happy if we'd signed him for depth..... especially if we start the season a few million below the cap (outside of extension and emergency signing dollars). I know all about his "name" bringing him to the pro bowl, but the dude still ripped up like 46 reps of 225 at the pro bowl competition (without spending months training for it) and his jock has more experience than anyone on our line. But like I said I don't want him, just wanted to add the name to the list.

Depth wasn't the point.

John was complaining that we needed to spend the money on FA OL to improve our starters. Not depth.

The point was though, 'The Cardianls are too Cheap to sign those guys'. Well we signed Edge which is hardly being cheap and as others have said, there just wern't many choices out there for one reason or another.

I see zero indications of the Cardinals being cheap. Non, nada, zippo

Okay, was just trying to point out that Graves will never sign a guy like Allen.

This team follows the strict cap strategy (aka the philly-model) and lots of posters fail to recognize that (talking to posters like John H here).

Does that mean that the team is cheap? No, it does not. It means that the team is very picky about which FAs they want to sign. But when a FA meets the right criterias, then the team is also willing to spent premium money for that player. The basic rule of the Philly-Model is not to put yourselves in a situation where you'll end up hurting the cap in the future, so no nonsense deals (a long-term deal that in reality is a one or two-year deal) and no long-term deals to older players that aren't expected to play out their entire contract.

Remember when the Eagles let Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor go, because they both wanted long-term deals - that's the essense of the strategy. If you are going to spend big money on FAs then use it on a young player entering prime or in his prime(on a well structured deal), because that player will play out the entire contract and not hurt the salary cap in the future.

If you look at the very weak FA market with those criterias, then you'll see the team did a very good job in FA. Clancy was the #2 DT after Kemoeatu, Brown #3 behind Hutch and Bentley (who we never had a shot at) and Edge was #1. So very, very good signing.

The team could have made a bigger splash a la the Browns, but not without paying a price in later years. But Graves chose NOT to wet himself in order to keep warm, and eventhough it is a limited and perhaps boring choice it is IMO the best choice.

Been working real well too. 15 wins out of the last 48 games and the dubious distinction of finishing last in points scored and points allowed in 2003 and having one of the worst running games in modern NFL history last season.

And that is because the Cardinals have been using the "Billy-model" cap strategy where they didn't have the money to compete on signing bonuses. Something that is being rectified by the extra revenue from the new stadium.

Hopefully having a real NFL coach in Dennis Green, smarter talent evaluators, and competitive revenue from the new stadium will finally end the futility that has been Arizona Cardinal football.
