Cardinals Team Report

The defensive line is changing from a two-gap system to one that focuses on speed and penetration, and there will be intense competition at both tackle spots. Kenny King and rookie Darnell Dockett are quick playmakers who will battle at under tackle. Wendell Bryant has been moved to nose tackle but must beat out Russell Davis.
Coach Dennis Green, after auditioning several punters, apparently will stick with the consistent Scott Player. GUARDS/CENTERS ANALYSIS Gs Leonard Davis and Cameron Spikes have swapped sides this year, with Davis moving to the left. That's a key position because Green likes to run to the backside. Davis was switched to left tackle during a recent minicamp, but that probably is a temporary move to try to motivate LT L.J. Shelton, who needs to lose 10 pounds. Davis, a mauling run blocker, probably is a better fit at guard. Spikes is strong but lacks athleticism; he was average, at best, last season. Reggie Wells will challenge Spikes to start. Wells is more athletic but far less experienced. C Pete Kendall should contend for a Pro Bowl selection. He's quick enough to get to his blocks in space and is extremely smart. Veteran Frank Garcia will have to hold off rookie Alex Stepanovich to remain the backup center.
