Cardinals Team Report

The defensive line is changing from a two-gap system to one that focuses on speed and penetration, and there will be intense competition at both tackle spots. Kenny King and rookie Darnell Dockett are quick playmakers who will battle at under tackle. Wendell Bryant has been moved to nose tackle but must beat out Russell Davis.

Coach Dennis Green, after auditioning several punters, apparently will stick with the consistent Scott Player. GUARDS/CENTERS ANALYSIS Gs Leonard Davis and Cameron Spikes have swapped sides this year, with Davis moving to the left. That's a key position because Green likes to run to the backside. Davis was switched to left tackle during a recent minicamp, but that probably is a temporary move to try to motivate LT L.J. Shelton, who needs to lose 10 pounds. Davis, a mauling run blocker, probably is a better fit at guard. Spikes is strong but lacks athleticism; he was average, at best, last season. Reggie Wells will challenge Spikes to start. Wells is more athletic but far less experienced. C Pete Kendall should contend for a Pro Bowl selection. He's quick enough to get to his blocks in space and is extremely smart. Veteran Frank Garcia will have to hold off rookie Alex Stepanovich to remain the backup center.

This will be the single biggest factor in taking this team's defense out of the dark ages and putting some respectability back into it (IMO). If we can start getting pressure on the QB while stopping the run, our points allowed total will go way down. If our offense plays like I think it will, we will score buku points and win games no one is giving us a chance to win. If we are going to make the playoffs, our defense has to improve drastically.

I think it's great!!

Think about it. We are actually going to design our system based on the personel we have on the roster. Tanner was no Ted Washington and niether is anybody else on this team,so why ask a player to do something he is not capable of?
So how do we stop teams from running on us? Offense. Score early and often and get teams out of their game plan. Force your opponents to play from behind. Our speed up front on the d-line should create some big plays for us. Lack of a run stuffer will create some big plays for our opponents. Will it work? Not all the time. But what we had around here for the last 20 years ( 98' is now a distant memory), NEVER worked.
I was always critical of how past coaching staffs didn't put our players in a position to suceed. Asking players to do things they couldn't do and not taking advantage of a players certain ability. Thankfullly that will change now. Failure will now fall more on the players.
I'm willing to bet we will never, NEVER, EVER, EVER call all 3 of our time outs in the first quarter ever again. We won't "go for it" when we should punt anymore and we won't punt when we should go for it.
Two gap, one gap. Cut this guy, cut that guy. Truthfully, I don't care. If this is what Dennis Green thinks, it's fine with me.

Yep. Isn't this the second year in a row we heard this? Has be true this year though, Denny G. just got rid of anyone vaguely resembling a 2-gap tackle.

Exactly, it didn't make a whole lot of sense when McGinnis changed the system to a two-gap system, because the personel wasn't there.
Unless Bryant steps up, we still need a massive DT to play the Nose DT, but the at least we have right personel for three of the four DL positions in this system.
