Cardinals | Team, Warner's agent disagree over bonuses
Thu, 7 Feb 2008 15:46:44 -0800

Mike Tulumello, of the East Valley Tribune, reports Arizona Cardinals QB Kurt Warner's agent would like the Cardinals to award a $500,000 bonus that Warner just missed statistically in the 2007 season. Warner's contract called for him to get a series of $500,000 bonuses, up to $1.5 million. He had four categories to reach, and he was successful on two of them, for $1 million. Warner came just short of the other two categories: finishing in the NFL's top 10 in passing yards and finishing with a passer rating of 90.0. He finished with a passer rating of 89.9. Cardinals general manager Rod Graves said he does not want to set a precedent by awarding Warner the $500,000.

Warners agent is an idiot to even ask for it.

Warners agent is an idiot to even ask for it.

I agree that they shouldn't give it to him but saying his agent is an idiot for asking might be a little harsh. After all, the worst they can do is say "No." Like the ol' saying goes, it never hurts to ask. We're talking about a half million dollars here. In fact, as Warner's agent, you could argue that he'd be remiss in his duties if he didn't ask. Know what I mean?

I am lost on the two he did not make. Is it correct he needed as passer rating of 90 and got and 89? He needed to finish in top 10 in yards passing? so where did he finish in that category? I think Warner salvaged what would have been an awful season. At least with passer rating he is close enough. Who would have thought Warner would have come that close at the beginning of the season? Based on the passer rating alone give him the money. Not doing it enforces Bidwill's reputation for cheapness and being a stickler for rules that hurt the team.

I read a story about Bidwill and Hart. Bidwill saw Hart's fathers car with a sticker on it that only season ticket holdrs should have. Bidwill would not overlook the trivial matter for his star QB and asked him to ask his dad to remove it.

What is half a million to total payroll? Not much. Reward those that excell.

If Warner had thrown fewer interceptions, he would have made more money.

Seems like a fair deal to me.

Give it to him regardless. For 1 million we make possibly our starting QB ( in case Leinart gets hurt ) next year happy. Plus doesn't it also go on last years cap ??

Simple he didn't make it so you don't give it to him or next time everybody will expect it if they get close.

And close would keep getting further away from the target.

Uhh no freaking way. And i think whoever made this public is an idiot, agent or whoever.

It's going to make the Cards look bad but Graves is absolutely right. This would set a dangerous precedent.

If this was Leinart I might do it to keep the (hopefully) future of the franchise happy and productive.

but the backup QB??? Like shane said: oh hell no

Nail on the head. Next thing you know everyone would be looking at their contracts saying "I was about that close too! I should get my incentive!".

Contracts are written to have no grey area at all. Didn't make it, don't get it. The dude made quite a bit of money. I'm not really feeling for him. Nobody told him to think Brenda's vagina was a clown car.

A contract is a contract.

What good are bonus requirements if they are not required?

Funny that 40year was defending that type of tactic in the Fitzgerald thread.

Have to side with the Cards on this one.

My 2 cents.
Unfortunately this is a no win situation for the the Bidwills. Award the bonus and your breaking down the bond of a contract and setting a precedent.
Dont award it and youre...
My suggestion would be to consider splitting the amount at 250k and donating it to a charity or charities of KWs choosing.
Positve publicity and a tax write off to boot.

I had a putt sit on the lip for a 71 last year. You know what? I shot a 72. Close isn't doing it. I say,too bad for Warner.

pure devils advocate as I don't think he should get it, but................

with being that close to an incentive and not paying it, do you think a player will do things to shield their own stats as opposed to helping the team - especially when a season is out of reach

instead of throwing the ball away out of bounds - take a sack, the incompletion could hurt your rating and keep you from getting paid

need a desperation throw and nothing is open - don't risk the Int - just chuck it away

jack up your elbow - don't suck it up and play hurt, it could hinder your performance and prevent you from getting paid - let the 3rd stringer get their reps and when healthy come back, play it safe and get paid

"Close" only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

He signed a contract, didn't hit the target. If you don't like the contract terms don't sign it.

If his passer rating was 90.001 and the Cards said that wasn't convincing and balked, then he would have every member here bashing the cards.
