Barry is my favorite running back of all time. There was an NFL films presentation from years ago and one of the men recorded said: "I would rather watch Barry Sanders lose five yards then watch any other running back gain ten."

Amen brother, amen.

And it would usually take Barry longer to lose those five yards than another to gain ten, as well.

He made 8 yard losses look like highlight film plays.

With that said, I still preferred Emmitt's running style of tough running for 4 yards every time. NFL Network replayed the 94 giants/cowboys game where Emmitt hurt his wing early in the game, couldn't even move it at all, and he still ran for 173 yards and put up another 60 in the air. In the OT, he was the main reason they moved up the field to kick the winning FG. Just grit and determination and toughness. That arm looked like a hunk of meat on his side, yet he powered through it. One of the all-time amazing RB performances, IMO. That game won the NFC East for them over the Giants...last game of the season. Incredible performance.

This was a running argument in the mid 90's and I was always a Barry guy. And it would usually take only one counter point.

What would Barry (who had 2000 yards one year) have done behind the cowboys HOF O-line?

Emmitt was great but he was no Barry.

Different systems. The Lions did a lot of zone blocking with Barry, which played to his strengths, letting him choose the hole. The Cowboys did man blocking, which suited Emmitt and his downhill style.

The tragedy of Barry's career isn't that he didn't get to play behind Dallas's line, it's that Mike Utley got paralyzed and Eric Andolsek died right when the Lions line was solidifying as a really good unit. They had Lomas Brown and Kevin Glover, and with those two guys and some stability, Barry should have had an excellent line to run behind. Instead, the line fell apart in 1992, so did the Lions, and the line was a problem until Barry retired.

How about this?

Jimmy Johnson recruited and played Thurman Thomas at Oklahoma State and that made his next RB recruit, Barry Sanders, ride the bench and wait his turn. Eventually, when JJ was hired to coach the Cowboys, he drafted Emmitt Smith.

The rest is history. Jimmy Johnson, was the best talent evaluator of my football lifetime, with the ex Green Bay Gm, Ron Wolf, a close second.

I'm curious as to how Johnson recruited Sanders, since he took over at Miami in 1984, and Barry's senior year of high school wasn't until 1985. And Sanders famously didn't play running back until his senior year.

I don't think the math works.

Grrr. Maybe I botched the timeline. Wouldn't be the first time. Just wrote that from memory.
