New Cardinals' head coach Ken Whisenhunt is the latest sports celebrity to move to upscale south Chandler.
Whisenhunt and his wife, Alice, paid $1.85 million for a lakeside house in the Ocotillo section of the city. The 5,500 square foot house sits on two-thirds of an acre with water on two sides. It has limestone floors, high-end appliances and a basement with a game room, media wall and a 72-bottle wine cooler.
His new location means the coach can carpool to work with his star player. advertisement
In February quarterback Matt Leinart bought a $2.3 million house in the Oakwood Hills gated community less than a mile south, near Chandler Heights and Alma School Road.
The Whisenhunt house is in a project called Embarcadero at Ocotillo near Alma School and Ocotillo roads. Both are gated and easy drives from the Cardinals practice facility in Tempe.
"In coaching, moving around is part of the business so we have a little bit of experience with that," Whisenhunt said. "We were really attracted to the Chandler area and all that it has to offer, especially for families.
"My wife and kids liked the house immediately so it wasn't a hard decision. Because of the hours you put in as coaches, it was most important that they felt comfortable with the house and the area," he added.
Josh Randall of Windermere Copper Desert Properties in Mesa had the listing. He thinks this affluent section of Chandler gives Scottsdale a run for its money.
"Chandler, in my opinion, is becoming the new Scottsdale," he said. "You can get a lot for your money in Chandler. One to two million in Scottsdale isn't nearly as nice as one to two million in Chandler."
The Whisenhunt house sold in 14 days for full price.
Several Arizona Cardinals already live in Chandler, including Neil Rackers, Adrian Wilson, J.J. Arrington and Anquan Boldin. Several have said they like the proximity to the Cardinals' training complex in Tempe.
