I would extend him tomorrow. He's not going to be expensive and he is a perfect fit for this team.
He can return kicks, catch out of the backfield and run a little. And he stays healthy.
A nice small bonus and something double the vet minimum should do it, I would think.
That's not true. He was nicked up all year last year, which is one reason why he wasn't effective as a gunner (I think he lost his job because he wasn't running well). The problem with assessing his value is that you can't give him even 15 touches a game, including kick returns.
I have no problem with the Cards extending LSH. I think people are right that this team needs to do better at extending their mid-level players before they can test free agency. But establishing his value in comparison to the rest of the league, and then getting him to play at that value? That's a challenge.
The Cards gave him a second-round tender that sets his 2012 compensation at $1.9 million. I think the Cards would love to include that as part of his bonus and have his new deal average $1.2 million per year or whatever. The issue is whether his agent says, "Well, you've established that he's worth $2 million a year to you. We'll let this contract average $3 million a year; give us four years, $12 million, and guarantee $6 million."
I don't think that would be a good deal.
