Tempe, AZ – The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced TODD HALEY has been hired as offensive coordinator and that CLANCY PENDERGAST has been retained as defensive coordinator.

A coaching veteran of 10 seasons in the National Football League, Haley comes to the Cardinals from Dallas where he was passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach on the staff of Bill Parcells. Prior to his three seasons with the Cowboys (2004-06), Haley was Chicago’s receivers coach for three campaigns (2001-03) under head coach Dick Jauron. He began his coaching career with the New York Jets and spent the 1997-2000 seasons as an assistant on Parcells’ staff there. After starting as an assistant to offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, he was elevated to receivers coach and spent the 1999 and 2000 seasons in that capacity. Haley spent the 1995 and ’96 seasons in the Jets scouting department. In his career, Haley’s receiving corps have featured some of the game’s best including Keyshawn Johnson, Wayne Chrebet, and Laveranues Coles with the Jets; Marty Booker with the Bears; and Johnson, Terry Glenn and Terrell Owens with the Cowboys.

Pendergast spent the last three campaigns as Arizona’s defensive coordinator and has been an NFL assistant for 12 seasons in all. In his first year as Cardinals defensive coordinator, his unit’s overall ranking improved from 26th to 12th and then to 8th in 2005. His defense has also been particularly adept at producing takeaways. Last season, Arizona forced 33 turnovers (17 fumble recoveries, 16 interceptions), the most since 1998. It was their second consecutive season with 30+ takeaways. Prior to joining the Cardinals, Pendergast had coached previously at the NFL level with Houston, Dallas, and Cleveland.

Today’s hirings bring the number of assistants on Whisenhunt’s coaching staff to seven. Haley and Pendergast join assistant head coach/offensive line Russ Grimm, defensive backs coach Teryl Austin, linebackers coach Billy Davis, strength and conditioning coach John Lott, and special teams coach Kevin Spencer.

No surprises here. Whisenhunt and Haley were coaches with the Jets and no doubt developed a good relationship as KW had the TEs and Haley the WRs. I also heard that Clancy had a very good interview with KW.

Dare I ask:

Was Clancy forced on Wis?

I wonder if the LB coach from Pittsburgh were allowed to leave if Clancy would still have gotten the job?

IMO -- the length of time it took to name Clancy suggests to me that he wasnt forced on Wis.

Tell me about it. If he goes back into a shell, I will pull the little bit of hair on my head out.

I agree. It was clear Whiz had plenty of opportunity to replace Clancy, and some of the guys he wanted to interview weren't given permission. I am confident that Whiz is happy with Clancy as DC.

Haley has spent about 6 years on Parcell's staff with both the Jets and Cowboys. That is interesting as Parcells is really tough on his staff. I think this is a very good hire.

Clancy will be coaching with all new defense position coaches. None of Denny's guys. They are all gone. (Bush Lbs, Brooks DL & Solomon DBs)

I'm very happy that Pendy is back. Cordination in coaches is a good thing. We can't seam to hire long standing coaches, but for the first time since 1988 maybe we have something going. I' sure Pendy and Wiz got together and that there was agreement on how they would go foward. I like our new QB coach as well. The staffing is shapping up.

The Haley hire is outstanding...Whizzie will call the plays, while Big Russ will coordinate the running game and Haley will coordinate the passing game. Talk about a triple threat! Wow!

As for Clancy Pendergast, if he can revamp the whole pass coverage schemes this off-season, he may take this defense to a far higher level. Of course, he will need the corners to play fasterand more aggressive corners and his FS this time around will need to show range and ballhawking instincts. It will be interesting to see what the Cardinals do in free agency and the draft to address the needs in the secondary.

It's my opinion that Haley will spend his time working with the QB's and the wr's. Wiz is going to call all offensive plays and Haley might habve input on game plans but he basically going to coach the QB and WR corp.

I think it was clear that Whiz got pleanty of chances to find a replacment for Pendy. So I would say "IF" he got a guy he wanted as DC he could of hired him.

Pendy may have not been his first choice, but he seems to be the best one he can get.

Well see what happens but it looks like we have a pretty good staff...

Anything official about keeping Courtright?

Also - what about TE? Any new DE names?

One thing I like - the top four coaching positions have been filled - which means they can move ahead with their organization plan and player evaluation activities and the coordinators can help out with the interviewing process for the few remaining openings.

I really hope we will have a very aggressive and demanding off season program for our players (within NFLPA guidelines of course).

Its nice having our 2 top coaches from the Cowher tree ....

And its really nice to bring in Haley who comes from the Parcells tree .. he will bring fresh and different input ...

And we can add some input by Billy Davis who was DC up in SF ...

This staff is really coming together ...

Its still very important who we bring in for Dline .. I'm hoping that we take a look at the coach from the Giants that was let go ...

Good hire on Haley.

This is what is so frustrating about Arizona's media coverage of the Cardinals. Denny is fired and no one talks about what really happened. We just get the usual "we felt we needed to move in a different direction". Just once I'd like to hear what the real problems were.

The Austin paper has more inside information and detailed explanations of whats going on with the Cowboys in Dallas, a city 200 miles away, than the Phoenix paper has about the Cardinals.
