One of the biggest winners coming out of the Super Bowl was Josh Sweat. His 2.5 sack total eliminated any doubt he was the top Edge in Free Agency. With strong ties to Gannon there seems little doubt then Cards will aggressively pursue him. Assuming Gannon gives his blessing surely the Cards are in a dominant position to sign him. From Sweat’s point of view the Cards are a team on the rise. He knows the defense they play. Gannon was a popular DC. Finally, the Cards have money to spend in a season with only a moderate free agent group. It all lines up. The only question is, will Ossenfort commit this large a portion of his bank to one player?

The other concept that came from the Super Bowl was the value of exceptional lines. Clearly superior line play was a major key to the Eagles’ win. Even if they secure Sweat, I expect the Cards to focus heavily on line strength. If Sweat is signed it enhances my view that the Cards should draft a DT first. If Sweat is in house the Cards should think 4 man pass rush. Those 4 don’t have to all be lineman. Sweat and Robinson are likely components. An athletic DT who can help collapse the pocket and anchor when needed would fill one of the 2 remaining slots. Perhaps last season’sp injured free agents can finish the set. Extending this reasoning, unless the Cards have a marked preference they would likely be persuaded to trade down.

Round 1 has a rich set of DTs. Likely the best group in many years. Graham will almost certainly go in the top 10 picks. Leaving Grant, Nolen & Harmon to be on the board. At least one is likely to survive until fairly late in the round. Teams like Houston and Baltimore might well offer a first and second round pick to move up to 16th. The Cards could then secure an OT, G or one of the remaining Edges in round 2 filling 2 holes. Maybe taking a WR or G in round 3. So if they can sign Sweat it really opens up the board. If you don’t want to chance going that low offering a third or fourth may move the pick slightly higher. Of course they could always throw in a 2026 pick.

There’s a great deal of talk about trading for a level one Edge. I find that unlikely. Ossenfort’s strategy is to build through the draft. So logically the only major free agent signings would be ones which enhance the draft. Again that’s what makes Sweat’s signing so logical. It fits the Cards philosophy.

Sweat had a pretty dominate postseason. He made himself a bunch of money.

I hope Monti is aggressive and makes a strong push to sign him. Then the Cards don't have to be so dependant on taking an Edge early in the draft.

On a side note KC Guard Trey Smith didn't look that great this postseason. Don't think I would spend big money on him.

Harry, what about DT Milton Williams Eagles who was also dominant in the game. He is also a free gent. Why not go after him?

With Josh Sweat and Milton Williams, keep this in mind:Sweat was drafted in 2018, while Jonathan Gannon was still in Indianapolis.Williams was drafted in 2021, with JG in the building. Not the end all be all, but worth noting

It is fairly obvious the Cardinals are lacking across both lines despite what has been done to date. It will probably take a similar approach ala CB to really see progress but unfortunately, that eats up resources to upgrade the entire team.

all depends on what the Cardinals plans are for Bilal Nichols and Jones
I think it has less to do with their "plans" for those players and more to do with their willingness to add talent which may lead to one of those two getting cut. Between OL, DL and EDGE, you can arguing pretty much ignoring every other position group this offseason. Obviously ILB has a hole along with WR and backup QB but 80% of resources should probably be dumped into flooding the big 3 spots with talent and letting the cream rise to the top.

This team ain’t going out and signing the top defensive FA in the game, who’s in the prime of his career.

Sweat likely gets tagged and even if he doesn’t, better teams with more creative cap maneuvering with go get him.

He’s certainly heading the second tier. He’s good at penetrating, but not as strong an anchor as the first 3 I listed. He’s also not quite the athlete. Still he’d be attractive though I’m hearing $20 mil a year. I can’t see the Cards signing him and sweat. If you’re thinking sign him and draft Umanmielen. That might work.

Sweat used the post season to secure 28mil a year...and likely 30.
I wouldn't hate on the signing but we ain't 1 player away just yet

Philly ILB Zack Baun has also been pretty dominant in the playoffs. I'd love to see us sign Sweat and Baun, and then take a DT in round one...Walter Nolan please.

this is arizona - we don't get nice things unless they're old - sweat is 27 - maybe in like 5 years - infact - what free agents are out there that are 30something?
No doubt, anyone hoping for a Sweat or Garrett should be preparing to be disappointed. Monti will surely uncover some more hidden gems!

Sweat fits the Monti profile of under 30 and durable

he has been good but not great -- in 2022 he had his career high of 11 sacks, but the rest of the years are between 6 and 8 ( since getting regular playing time) Had 8 this past year playing 59% of snaps

i worry that Sweat is the kinda player who looks good when he is the 7 or 8th best player on the D rather than a top 3 guy.

Its Mikes money, so who cares -- but if they signed him, i think he would be part of the defensive solution to pass rush rather than THE solution to the pass rush

When it comes to free agency, you can start at the middle of the list and go downward. That's where you'll find the Cards signings. I'm thinking guys like OG Mekhi Becton, RT Jedrick Wills, and ILB Devin Bush. Former 1st round guys that have had injury issues but have talent. And, mainly, won't command a lot of suitors.
You can forget Tre Smith or Sweat or any other highly rated player.

Much easier to succeed next to Carter vs. Roy Lopez!

Man, I forgot about that.

Buddy's teams weren't great but those were two signings that we definitely got value out of.
Simmons in 1995 was great! 11 sacks, 6 forced fumbles and a pick 6! And Joyner had 6 INTs in 3 years along with 11 sacks as a LB. Definitely both were highlights from the horrible Buddy eara.

Chandler Jones was 26! And he's only 34 now, which I wasn't expecting.
