IMO trading for Alex Smith would be the best option for the Cards to fill the QB position. A 2nd round pick in 2018 and conditional 4th round pick in 2019 should be enough. I know that this will not be greeted warmly and not popular with many board members but the Cards need a solid qb not a big name high price flashy one.

Alex is just 33 years of age and could be the Cardinal starter for the next 4 to 5 years. There are several key factors that I like about Alex:

  1. He is cerebral, one of the smartest qbs in the NFL. He is an excellent game manager.
  2. He is an accurate passer. His % completion for KC over the last 5 years is over 65%.
  3. His turn-over ration is very low. He doesn’t throw a lot of interceptions.

He would complement RB DavidJohnson. It would be a well balanced attack

Additionally the Cards have a top defense. We would not have to score 40 points per game to win. We can also use our first round pick on getting a top OL or CB and fill out our other needs in free agency. He is the perfect qb to get and keep us in the playoffs the next several years and would not cost a fortune. His salary for 2018, I believe is $17 million. We could give him a Carson Palmer type contract extension which would allow us to still compete in free agency and keep our best players.

I’d rather have Kirk Cousins & I’m not a Cousins fan at all.

Also, lol @ the thought of wasting a 2nd & 4th round pick on him.

Stop with the retreads. Stop delaying the inevitabie of drafting a QB. It’s really pathetic. No, this isn’t a shot at you, but for the Cardinal fanbase that continues to do this.

Very well argued, az jam. I am intrigued with Alex Smith and your points are spot-on. It would be an interesting irony if the Cardinals trade for Smith, for it was Smith who said a couple of years before Warner's SB run that "all you have to do is put pressure on the Cardinals and they will fold." Anyone else remember that? Man, that peed me off something big-time...mostly because he was right.

They could do a lot worse than end up with Smith. Cousins? No thanks. Either of these guys will cost $20m+ on the open market, so the last thing you want is a turd taking up that much cap space - Cousins IMHO doesn't warrant anywhere near that kind of coin, but Smith is a different animal. I trust him more not to just have an erratic game here and there as Cousins is prone to doing.

Draft the right QB. Don't mortgage the future on the third or fourth best guy.

Anyways, Smith only has 2-3 years left in him... he would probably be wasted on this team. But I wouldn't be all that mad if he was our best option the way the off-season shook out. I'm pretty negative about what our future at QB is going to be, though.

Cousins will cost too much. I really like Alex Smith but if BA comes back (which I hope he will), Alex is not a good fit for this offense.

I'm looking for a good name for an aging, game-managing quarterback that would have had the tread changed twice already.

I’d have no problem with Alex Smith at QB high completion percentage low turnovers with our D will win a lot of games.

You make some good points but I am not a Smith fan at all. Tyreke Hill's run after catch ability has somewhat inflated Smith's numbers. The Cards don't have anyone like that on their roster.

Give me Cousins, who is worth it, and a good fit, over Smith everyday.

I also would take Cousins over Smith. However, I think he will end up resigning with the Redskins.

Smith seems to make quite a few critical mistakes these days. He oddly seemed better when younger. I’d never pay a second for him. If he came cheaply he’d fill the bill as a bridge, but I can’t picture him long term. Could be a good mentor, I think.

Smith plays tough. He's a grinder. It isn't very pretty, but he keeps grinding away. That's a plus, imo. I'm just not sure whether he has already peaked or not. In some ways he keeps getting better.

Andy Reid has had Alex Smith as his qb for the 5 years he has been in KC. Been to the playoffs 4 years. Came in 2nd in the NFC West with a 9 & 7 record the year they missed the playoffs. Bottom line is they have won together.

Kurt Warner was one so was Carson Palmer. Both worked out well for the Cards.

Carson Palmer and Kurt Warner are superior quarterbacks who commanded an offense. Alex Smith is a perfect-conditions game manager. Everywhere he's played, he's had excellent running backs, offensive linemen, and a stout defense. Alex Smith hasn't ever been asked to be aggressive. If he came into our division, he'd be the 4th best quarterback, without question.

Smith's problem is Andy Reid.

No way. For all the gripe people have for Reid, he's done well with quarterbacks. I was stunned when he made the trade for Smith as he's not the kind of QB that works in his offense and is a conservative game manager.

I truly believe right now that 2019 draft is our best shot to get the actual franchise QB we all dream of for the Cards. Either way, we will need an experienced QB for another 2 yrs, to both start and mentor our "dream" QB of the future. Thus, I would look for our 'new current' QB as someone who would be an expert mentor, teacher, and example for what we want the new kid to be.

That being said, I would go after .........

If BA is coming back sign a veteran QB (Alex Smith, Cousins etc). If BA is out, let the new coach get what he needs (draft or FA)

Gotta be honest azjam, you make a compelling argument for Smith.
