You never know until they get in here and suit up, but at first glance, the only UDFA who intrigues me is Garvey (due to the nexus of his speed and our need for a home run hitting return guy).

I'm surprised we haven't brought in an UDFA center. You would think with this draft supposedly deep in centers we would at least bring one in.

Does anyone know if Phillip Hunt or Josh Mauga have signed with anyone?

Seem like I read that Garvin is a super fast player and great returner. This I think was from a FSU fan who thought who ever got him would be more than happy. I got a feeling this guy just might make the team. I did see him play and he indeed was fast. Very fast.

I saw in an interview with Trevor Canfield that he had played center some in the past and felt he could so in the pros.

I wondered if the staff selected him with the thought of him playing the position? A lot of NFL centers are conversion guys anyway. Grimm might have saw something in him that led him to beleive that he could be an NFL center.

they are all camp bodies...nothing more. Maybe one makes the practice squad...the rest are out and working in the real world in 6 months.

A short blip on Garvin. It seems his Dad played pro football and is a high school coach...

When Michael Ray Garvin was eight, he beat his father, former NFL and USFL player Johnny Ray Garvin, in a sprint for the first time. That prompted a sit down.

"I asked him if he wanted to be a great player or just a good one, and he said he wanted to be great," Johnny Ray told The Post. "So then I asked him, 'How hard are you willing to work to make that happen?' "

Michael Ray answered by getting up two hours before school and working out at the Teaneck High School track. Garvin developed into a track and football star at Don Bosco Prep and then Florida State, where he was a key member of the three-time NCAA championship track team and a starting cornerback.

Garvin, a 5-foot-8, 180-pound radar blip of speed, won't be at this weekend's NFL Draft. He'll be running in the Penn Relays. He's a borderline draft pick, but he has two qualities that can't be coached: Garvin has run several sub-4.3 40s, and he'll work his rear end to make an NFL team.

"There's no sense in sitting around and watching the draft and getting nervous," he said. "I just want an opportunity."

Trying to find out much about these guys was (in most cases) difficult because the major draft books/sites didn't scout them.

So I hit the Google.

What you find are a few news stories from college or hometown newspapers or an occasional 3rd-echelon fans' draft site.

Common thread - Something that disrupted the scouting process. One guy had mono in his senior year. Another guy changed schools. Another guy sprained his ankle during his pro day. Another guy improved his forty time by nearly 0.2 seconds.

In a very true sense, undrafted free agency gives these guys a second chance to prove they belong.

Which isn't all that different from most of the guys we drafted - aside from (of course) making the team, just about every one of them has something to prove.

On face value, I like this draft and UDFA class.

You never know. There are diamonds-in-the-rough out there. Off the top of my head, Priest Holmes and James Harrison were undrafted.

If you are a UDFA WR and have a dream of playing in the NFL why would you sign with the Arizona Cardinals?

Justin Brown had pretty good college numbers at Hampton but we have a ton of quality WRs ahead of him. Same thing with Shane Morales, decent numbers at Oregon State but c'mon.

Chase Bullock had 1 start in his college career. I don't expect anything out of him.

Garvin may have a chance as a kick returner. Walker, Davis & El-Amin may have a chance at the practice squad but I don't really expect much from these guys. Camp bodies...its so nice not counting on 2 or 3 of these guys to be regular contributors. If we do hit on any of them its gravy--before if we didn't get a few "keepers" we were disappointed.

Jameel DOWLING. This is my boy here. Share a last name with him!

"He's so coachable, and it impresses me that he plays so low, being so tall," he added. "The thing is, too, his height takes so much away from people -- they can't get the ball over him. Plus, he's got the speed to run with them (4.4- to 4.5-second 40-yard dash)."

After two all-conference years at Butte (Calif.) College and playing in 11 games in his junior season at Oregon, he transferred out because he felt pressure from the Ducks' coaches to return from a severe ankle injury before it fully healed; Dowling thought it could have damaged his long-term prospects for pro football.
^^ From Star Bulletin.

6'3". Fast and athletic. Sat out a year after transferring from Oregon. Odds are against him, but good luck. Get him into camp and see what he's got.
