I am sorry, but I just can't believe that folks can be upset that the Cards are making an honest effort to go after Emmitt Smith. Sure he is getting up in years, but this is one of the 10 or 15 greatest football players of all time. The Cards need to get better on the field, but they must also get better with the fans as well and what better way than to bring in a legend. So what if it is a gimicky way to get some more butts in the stands. Folks, I have been a DIRECTV subscriber for the last 5 years (an out of stater from Illinois) and I have seen every Cards home game via DIRECTV for the last 5 years and for 80% of those games it is embarrassing to see how the TV crews try to make up for the lack of fans in the stands. The fan shots they show at Cardinal games remind me of what you see at Conference Tournament games you see on ESPN2 when the University of Buffalo plays the University of Missouri/Kansas City in Boise, Idaho in front of 500 fans in a stadium that fit 12000. The TV crews purposefully show only the first 5 rows because the rest of the place is empty.

You guys gripe if the Bidwill's are cheap. There must have been 500 posts last week about how inept and how cheap and how worthless this franchise was because they had so much cap space and couldn't sign anyone. Now they go out and get some people, have a shot at both Vonnie Holliday and Emmitt Smith and now they are viewed as buffoons for overpaying. Can't have it both ways.

I for one am looking forward to 5000 people at the first Cards training camp practice, and every sports news crew from ESPN to CNN camped in Flag to catch Emmitt Smith's first practice as a non-Cowboy.

I want to have some buddies over next year, watch a Cards game and not get ridiculed the entire game because there are 50000 empty seats.

We finally got a player who is young talented and re-signed named Marcel Shipp. I dont think we should bring in a guy that would get handoffs becasue of what he did in the past. Shipp is perfect for this O-Line, and I think that there are a lot more holes to fill rather than the ones in SDS.

As a cards fan, I HATE EMMITT. But I would love to have him on my team. THis guy is a warrior who can play and show a VERY young team how to win. The price is a little steep, but you ALWAYS need another runningback. We have the cap space, use it.

We already have five RBs on the roster (Shipp, Jones, Scobey, Anderson, Prentiss). I'm not sure if you combined all their ages you wouldn't still be younger than Emmitt. How much depth do we need?

Again, I think that a lot of people are overestimating Smith's value as a coach to younger players and a motivator. Smith did nothing to help Hambrick progress. As for being a winner, what has he done since the Cards beat him in the playoffs? Nothing. All he did last season was sulk on the sidelines. He didn't help a couple of young QBs progress. He bitched about his touches.

Emmitt have never been a vocal leader. He's always said that he leads by his example. My question is: The example of the last three seasons or the example of the early to mid 90s?

I'm wavering on this one. At first I was against it hindering the development of Shipp, but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea.

The team does need to get more experience, you can't win always being the youngest team in the league.

Plus on passing downs, I really like the idea of Emmitt back there picking up the blitz or being an emergency outlet.

It is are god given right to Gripe even if we sign or don't sign players until the season ends and we are in the 2nd round in the playoffs can we stop complaining. But I would also take a winning season. GO CARDS

He didn't help anyone as a Cowboy.

How do you know that what he said at the Press Conference isn't lagit?

I think everyone can read between the lines. That includes Marcel Battle...Shipp and E. Smith. Time and time again I read on this board that this a business and if the Bidwills had a real Business they... well would be outta business.

IMO this is a good move for the Cards with some bad timing for Shipp unfortunately. But I am not looking at next year I think this will help in 2004 and 2005. You saw what happen to Colvin and we all know why. If we go 8-8 next year with several close losses and we get a top tear FA that we want to fill a need in 2004 do you think that they are going to have the same perception that Colvin may of had?

Most of you here believe that the Cards will probably not make it to the playoffs next year. So maybe the Front Office see the same way and feel Emmitt will help the Cards get over the hump in regards to being perinial losers. Not so much as to help them win on the field but help them become winners with his wining attitude and work ethic. Hell the Media alone will change there attitude in regards to the Cards if Emmitt plays ball in AZ (IMHO of course).

Believe me I would much wrather have Shipp be the main RB because he earned it. I also believe that he could become a well know RB is the league. Shipp is my favorite player on this years team and I still feal that getting Emmitt will help this team out when it comes to perception of the Perinial losers known as the Arizona Cardinals

For what it is worth,

Mike

Well said Holian.

In some people's eyes, the Cards are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Too many want to bitch about the Cards and give them grief, rather than say ONE good thing about what Graves and the Bidwills are doing this year.

Again, WELL SAID

As a Diehard Cardinal fan deep in cowfelon territory I don't see why anyone would hate Emmitt. HATE the cowfelons, but Smith is a model citizen and a great football player.

He stands head and shoulders above the thugs and jerks who are the rest of the felons (that includes the owner, Jerry the Jerk)
