Then why sign Foote? He signed w/Detroit and then only lasted one season.

And was demoted in the process.

Look, I like Foote and think he would have been marginally better than Lenon. However, I think we overvalued him because he played on such a good defense. They let the guy go when he was 28 years old (I know they resigned him this year), and the worst defense in the league benched him midyear (I am aware of the schematic differences). Not saying the guy sucks, but he isn't anything to be frustrated over. I will be far more disappointed if we can't pull Porter.

Foote got demoted by the frickin' Lions, how is that any better. DeAndre Levy is apparently good enough to let Foote walk.
http://detnews.com/article/20100204...rated-Larry-Foote-will-test-free-agent-market

But seriously, what ever. I'll agree. Foote is better the Lenon.

Great! We have established that Lenon is very basic NFL talent, and Foote is a little bit better then very basic NFL talent.

Lamenting over not signing Larry Foote is ridiculous.

Might I add that I think the Cardinals will bring in another ILB.

Akin Ayodele, maybe Andra Davis.

And maybe between Lenon, Ayodele, Foote, and Davis, Andra Davis MIGHT be the best talent, but not by much that is for sure.

We have been, and officially are rummaging through the bargin bin of linebackers.

I have not a clue how good or bad this guy is. I just have to trust the guys who picked out and signed him. Signing him for three years tells me something. How a guy played for a previous team at that position is not always the best indicator. Thomas Jones did nothing for us now he has been a consistent 1000 runner for 6 or so years. Kurt was nothing with his previous team and then leads us to the superbowl. Here is hoping he is the man.

I agree with John ----- He is an Arizona Cardinal now, and that is by the choice of Whiz and Graves. That is good enough for me. With whichever player was left available in FA this year, they were going to be grooming a draftee to replace them on the roster. If we can still sign Porter, and have a good draft, we will be all right come TC.

i think it's possible that the assumption that Lennon was signed to be a back-up is a faulty one. And even if not, it seems like backwards thinking to me to worry about depth when you've got nothing up front. Smells like the whole "build the belly of the beast" stuff we heard back in 2003 when we started rookies everywhere and sucked so much ass that i was able to bet 500 bucks against us with 15 point spreads and cover by the end of the first quarter.

now that's not to say we'll be 2003 bad... we've got a great coach and a ton more talent. I'm just not the biggest fan of our approach to FA this year.

Well, no doubt he's one "n" short of being a Fab 4 pickup, but I see it no different from the signing of Hadnot and Ware. Players who may compete from some starting time, will contribute - but, are hardly ideal. Not being intimate with the plan, I don't precisely know what it is, so will wait to see between now and training camp how it unfolds.

What are they supposed to say? Our current roster has a beat-up, disappointing Hayes, Reggie Walker, Ali Highsmith, and Monty Beisel. I could probably compete with them for a starting spot.

So for now he is not just a back-up/special teamer considering the current makeup of the roster. But there are 5 months of roster editing to do before our starting lineup even struts out on the field.

Beisal is a UFA, and, of course, we'll all be looking forward to seeing you at camp, Joe.

Because Detroit cut Lenon and signed Foote to replace him. Lenon has been a starter for two defenses that were the worst in the NFL those years. Lenon was looking for a job into last July or August last year. Did a year on the worst team in the NFL suddenly make him a valuable commodity?

I am calling BS on the Cards choosing Paris over Foote, Paris has played his whole career in a 4-3 and Foote played 7 of 8 seasons in the 3-4. Foote was a natural choice for the Cards IMO...

I understand your frustration here, LIAC, but more players are coming...believe me this is only the beginning. Lenon may be a nice surprise for a year or two while a Sean Weatherspoon, Daryl Washington or Koa Misi develops. Have patience, my friend.

Joe??? I thought that was the case with Beisel, I was just going off the roster on the Cards website.

I was obviously joking about the being able to compete for a starting job. I guess I will have to use :sarcasm: from now on.

Joe's vs Pros...

I didn't think you were serious, or at least hoped not... ;)

He was starter on a great defense that wanted to go to their 1st round pick in Timmons, signed a one year contract with the Lions so he could be close to his family, and didn't come back because he wasn't comfortable in the 4-3. Completely different from being a terrible player that starts for terrible defenses.

So now Lenon's a "terrible player". Right, dude. Whatever.

Who else wanted Foote, besides PIT who wants him as a backup?

It would have been nice to get Foote, but I'm not heartbroken.

He is and if you don't believe me, look back at any Detroit or St. Louis game or just wait until he takes the field for us. There's also no word on all interested teams or that he is surely going to be a backup. Timmons was a disappointment last year and Farrior is 35 years old.

I thought he played really well last year. He was really good in coverage and showed a ton as a blitzer, I would even say he is one of the top WILBs in the league right now. Timmons is there to stay and will be a good player for a long time.

I could, however, see Foote take Farrior's spot sometime in the near future, if they don't spend an early draft pick to address the spot. Farrior really seemed to have gotten slower and became less of a force in the run game this past year.

Have the numbers come out yet on the Lenon contract? I seriously doubt we gave him the same money as what Foote got and I think the Steelers overpaid for Foote. He would add very little to our defense and might not even be an improvement over what we have now in Lenon. As someone else stated, we have a whole five months to add another guy in the spot, lets not freak out over not signing Larry Foote.

Timmons was a good blitzer and coverage, but his tackling was not up to par.

Eh maybe, but he is their best coverage LB and is an excellent blitzer. He is also playing a new position and is really really young, I would hardly call him a disappointment.

Lenon is a terrible player. We will not be very good if he is starting for this defense come September. Lenon was looking for a job last August after being cut by the New England Patriots in training camp and ended up with the Rams. He's played for three teams and been on the roster of Carolina and New England, as well.

If he had anything worth making him a solid starter, surely one of the five teams that he's played for would have recognized it.

Maybe he'll be as good as another of Graves's free agent gems, Orlando Huff .

Cardinals wanted BOTH Foote and Lenon, not one or the other...

http://www.azcardinals.com/news-and...cy-Fluid/6925edc6-ca1d-4d6b-b929-36d4d9dc7a08

"The Cardinals had been looking at linebacker Larry Foote, who agreed to a contract with the Steelers Monday. The Cards signed their own linebacker Monday, bringing in Paris Lenon.
The timing was slightly odd, but despite the circumstances, Graves said the Cardinals were considering signing both – not one or the other."
