Hop Toad, I'm taking you to the mat. You say that you'd rather have Matt Cassel than Matt Barkley. But would you rather have Matt Leinart than either of the other two? :)

Very clever deduction on your part Guernsey, very clever. The on the roster for 6 games clause is very unusual so I think your theory has a ton of merit. Even if it doesn't come to fruition .....still very clever.

Thank you. Although I wasn't trying to be.

Woke this day thinking that Thomas may be the ideal backup for Kaep in San Fran....

The premise is really quite simple.

The Cards "in the end" want 2 QB's on the 53, not 3.

They picked up Barkley as insurance against losing Sims or Thomas to a waiver claim.

If either is signed to the Cards PS, they are in a position to dump Barkley at no cost.

Make sense now?

(Further... when Massie comes off suspension they are going have to drop somebody)
Like others have stated it doesn't make a ton of sense because Barkley is now the 3rd QB on the 53. Which means they still had to cut a talented player that they would have wanted to keep by having only 2 QBs. Also a reason that I have heard elsewhere that makes sense is that Barkley fits the mold of an "intelligent" QB that BA appears to like and it is quite possible that Sims and LT didn't fit that mold. I think it is quite possible that BA values intelligence in his QBs more than any other trait and thus Barkley being considered an intelligent guy might actually make sense as the 3rd QB.

It's makes absolute sense if you accept the premise, that the trade for Barkley is simply a means of making sure you have a 3rd QB on your roster prior to waivers; that the Cards want 2 not 3 QB's on their final 53 - and keep in mind that the Massie suspension means that in reality the Cards are carrying 54 until he's reinstated after week 2.

If, for example, they sign Thomas to the PS, they can dump Barkley immediately or drop him when Massie comes back to the fold. You then have 2 QB's on your 53, offering more flexibility there, and have stowed away a backup on the PS.

He would be. That would give them 2 athletic, inaccurate passers to choose from. They should have acquired Terrelle Pryor for the hat trick.

I have been seeing some misinformation on this site regarding this trade that I would like to clear up. The Cards are giving up a minimum of a 7th round pick for Barkley that will turn into a 6th after 6 games on the roster. Not nothing that turns into a 7th after 6 games like I have seen on here.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported the Eagles will receive a conditional seventh-round pick that moves to a sixth-round pick if Barkley is on the Arizona roster for six games.

Edit: And now I am seeing conflicting reports so I guess we shall wait and see.

Cards site seems to be one of the conflicting sites:

"The trade is for a conditional seventh-round pick, and the condition is that Barkley has to be on the roster for at least six games. That gives the Cards some time to evaluate him on the field before being locked into losing a draft pick."

Just got back from vacation and heard about this on my drive out to San Diego. I'm just glad the Logan Thomas experiment is over as I didn't see any future with Logan Thomas. I liked Sims over Thomas but even he was a career 3rd stirnger at best. Barkley I don't much about except for what he did his junior year several years ago. It will be interesting to see if he sticks.

I'm just glad that Keim doesn't sit on a player he drafted just because he drafted him. He will continue to bring in new guys until he finds one that sticks.

"When he came out of college we spent a lot of time with him," General Manager Steve Keim told Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. "We know he is a football junkie. The mental part of the game is not too fast for him. Now, we bring him in, not a lot of risk involved, and you see what he’s got physically. To me, that’s how you have to approach that position because they are so hard to find.”

Questions remain about Barkley’s arm strength, although he said the shoulder problems are in the past.

“It took close to a year to really heal up,” Barkley said. “I don’t have any questions about that now. Once I get going and start pushing it down the field, I don’t think they’ll see anything either."

Not anywhere - My fantasy has Matt Barkly ranked as the #3 ranked available QB ! don't know if that's good or bad - just is :bang:

The Eagles are getting the Cardinals 7th round pick. Barkley has now been on the roster for the conditional six games. (The rosters are locked in for the week.)

Hmmm interesting, havent seen any rumblings about him. I like him, doesnt seem like BAs type of QB though. All i can say is at least Cards have some small chance of QBOF for a 7th round pick. Ill take it.
