One little thing...

I started a thread about this on one of the logos/uniforms boards I frequent, and someone made a very astute observation about some of the banners:

Nice stadium, but one glaring error:

There aren't supposed to be apostrophes to denote decades. 1940s is preferred, with '40s being accepted and 1940'S being categorically DE-NIED.

And that concludes my grammatical rant of the day.

I think he's right. Someone may need to correct this before they're actually produced.

I visited the Hoosier Dome (RCA Dome now) a few years ago - the field was set up for footbal although there was a college marching band competition going on - for a 100 yd field the place seemed "cozy".

I look forward to making the trip out west and seeing the place from the inside.

I took a tour of the (then-called) Hoosier Dome back when it opened in 1984...nice place for the times, but TINY for an NFL football stadium.

Kind of strange how compact it was...and, the upper deck seats were all benches. The only seat-back chairs were in the lower level. Not really a bad seat in the place though.

Maybe that's why that guy is on the phone. "Hey, uh, Mr. Bidwill? You know that big display with all the years on it? Well, uh, since the year font is more noticable than, um, uh, our accomplishments, it might be uh helpful if we displayed it correctly."

From http://www.bartleby.com/68/50/4650.html:
The Columbia Guide to Standard American English. 1993.

PLURALS OF LETTERS AND NUMBERS usually add -s: two Xs, Ph.D.s, MIAs, 1990s, the ’20s. Use an apostrophe only when you need it to prevent confusion: Mississippi has four i’s. He got A’s in both courses.

I always thought this made sense, but i had a high school English teacher try to convince me that apostrophes should be used to form the plural of numbers, initials, and the like. It does seem like a very fine point on which there may not be universal agreement.

Unfortunately, they seem already to have been "actually produced."

That picture is a Photoshop job...hopefully the real ones haven't been made up yet...

The gray seats are in the sun, the red seats are in the shade.

Two questions:

Why did they do that?

I thought the sun moved, do the grey seats cover all possible sun locations?

I just hope the grey seats aren't visible during broadcasts.

There was also something similar to this in the gameday programs last year.

I think it was "25 Year's Ago" or something. Can't remember.

This is probably a dumb question, but why would one want to reflect the light coming in? Seems like if the seats are empty during a game, this reflection would blind fans on the other side of the stadium. I know Ive been to ASU day games that arent sold out and the metal bleachers on the other side of the stadium nearly blind me.

It isnt designed to actually "reflect" the light, like a mirror --

but rather a stylistic reflection -- Rather than a sea of red seats, you mix in grey seats in a pattern that continues the lines of the building

I like the question. I hope that doesn't mean...well, you know.

Really that is the point. What effect is the gray-seat light-reflection supposed to give? Is it supposed to make it appear like their is more light coming in? WHY!?

Oh. So it's because they don't plan on filling those seats with people dressed in Cardinal Red and want to be able to fall back to "what a great building design" change of subject.

Got it.

As I've mentioned before, the seat pattern is intentional. It is supposed to be the shape of some Native American symbol (I'm still looking for what it's called). It's a sunburst kind of thing.

I think the Bidwills are frustrated interior decorators/architects trapped in the bodies of NFL owners--

they are certainly putting a great deal of effort and thought into this thing
