CINCINNATI – Outfielder Carlos Quentin, one of the centerpieces of the Diamondbacks’ youth movement, was optioned to Triple-A Tucson on Friday.
Hitting just .210 in 200 at-bats, he hasn't looked comfortable at the plate all season.
His struggles might be connected to a left labrum tear he suffered in the middle of March. Prior to that, he had been one of the club’s best hitters in spring training, and he was productive in 57 games with the Diamondbacks last season.
Upon returning from the shoulder injury on April 16, he didn’t look the same. Whether or not the shoulder was still bothering him, he never seemed to get his timing at the plate, often falling behind early in counts and swinging at pitches out of the strike zone.
A highly decorated minor leaguer, he was considered among the club’s best prospects since he was drafted in the first round out of Stanford in 2003. Baseball America ranked him the 20th-best prospect in the majors before last season.
The club recalled Triple-A outfielder Jeff Salazar to take Quentin’s place. Salazar, whom the Diamondbacks picked up off waivers from the Rockies near the end of spring training, was hitting .302 with 23 doubles, seven triples and eight home runs for Tucson.
