I am a first time poster on this website, but I have lurked around here for quite a while. I posted a few times back on the azprosports website. I usually enjoy reading, but I finally decided to post because I heard a rumor today about the suns.
First of all let me say that I am not claiming to be an insider nor do I claim to know an insider. So please don't crucify me for being a first time poster that posts a rumor.
Anyways, I called my boss today to tell him about the Q trade. He said that he had heard about it a couple of days ago. You see, my boss has a roommate who works for the suns. He is no ball boy, nor is he an executive, but he has the ability to occasionally hook-up my boss with really good seats. I do not wish to reveal his roommate's actual title for obvious reasons.
My boss then tells me that the Suns are not done and that there is another trade coming soon. Now my boss is a huge suns fan, but he is not that knowledgeable about the rest of the NBA or non-suns player. So the details are unclear. Please take this with a grain of salt as did I.

This is what he told me:

1. The Suns will move up in the draft to the 15th or 16th pick by trading Barbosa. (I assumed that we would also give up the 21st and possibly someone else.) He did not know what player that we wanted to select.

2. The Suns are going to pick-up a back-up point guard for Nash who is being personally requested by Nash. He told me that he could not remember his name but that he used to play behind Nash in Dallas. (I immediately guessed Van Exel, but he said that wasn't it.) He said the player was old. (After looking at rosters I can only guess Travis Best.) Anyone else have an idea?

What say you?

Like I said before, this is a RUMOR. Oh yeah, it's great to finally be a part of this site.

welcome aboard :)

rumors are good, they fuel the fires of hysteria that come with being a sports fan :)

hey, in a week we find out if number 1 is true, and if it is, then 2 can't be far behind.

Travis Best was quite good when young. I have no problem with trading away LB but who do we want to go after at around 15 and 16? And #21 plus LB maybe to deep of a price, unless we want to go after one of the athletic SFs from Graham to Warrick and trade away Marion in a later deal. ;)

The only guy I love in the late lottery is Joey Graham. Not because I want to trade Marion, but because is one of the best defenders in the draft to go with being one of strongest guys. He could play either forward positions.

Welcome aboard Folster. I think that first post is always the hardest. :)

It's been rumored that the Phoenix Suns might want to move up in the draft. Garcia makes sense, and I don't mind one bit sacrificing Barbosa to move up for anybody. Garcia himself is probably a better point guard than Barbosa at this point. I wonder who else they might be targeting.

The point guard rumor is interesting also. Off the top of my head I can't remember any backup point guard's who played behind Nash other than Nick Van Exel and Travis best.

Great stuff. Keep it coming, and welcome to the messageboard.

Yesterday I added a thread about free agents from the realgm site. It shows all free agents, RFA and UFA.

One of them is Darrell Armstrong Dallas Unrestricted F.A.

This could be who Nash would like as his backup if this is true. He is a veteran and should be a reasonable pick-up, and can play some defense.

I can't remember. Was he acquired by Dallas before Steve Nash left?

Looking through Basketball-Reference, these are the players who look like they might have been Steve Nash's "backups" in Dallas.

Travis Best (2004)
Tony Delk (2004)
Nick Van Exel (2003, 2002)
Avery Johnson :p (2003, 2002)
Tim Hardaway (2002)
Howard Eisley  (2001)
Erick Strickland (2000, 1999)
Damon Jones (2000)
Robert Pack (2000, 1999)

If Erick Strickland is a FA, he probably makes the most sense for the Suns (out of that group at least). My guess is that your boss wasn't talking about Howard Eisley...

Anyway, welcome to the board! :)

No. Plus, he'd be just about useless for the Suns, as he's lost his ability to shoot threes.

Looking over that list again gives me a new appreciation for Leandro Barbosa. ;)

Hey Folster, if either of those rumors pans out, you're off to a great start here!

Otherwise, get in line behind the rest of us degenerate speculators...

Maybe Robert Pack is the PG. He fits the "old" description. I remember thinking that he wasn't bad. He and Nash haven't been teammates for a long time, though, and I guess it's unlikely that Nash would reach that far back into his past.

The suns tried to trade or sign Pack a few years back. I think he has been injured a lot though and played overseas a couple years. Not sure where he played last year.

Vernon Maxwell :)
Howard Eisley
Damon Jones
Hubert Davis
Robert Pack - 37 years old

That's it, and none of those guys outside of Damon Jones, who is a starter in Miami, is worth looking at.

Didn't he play with George Mikan?

I'm not that impressed with that list of point guards either. With all of the in-season trades along with the Q for KT trade, and IF we lose barbs and pick-up an old point then our team just got a heck of a lot older. Don't forget we still might lose Hunter.

That leaves us with just four young players Amare, JJ, Marion, and a 1st rounder. and maybe a second rounder

I would actually love to get Erick Strickland. He's one of the most underrated defenders in the league. He bugs the hell out of every point guard he goes after. You can see it. His playmaking is suspect, but if you put him out there with Quadruple J(both JJs) it should be fine.

Welcome aboard.

I dunno, I kind of doubt the LB trade. The Suns are so stinkin' high on him. Plus, he knows the system and they believe he could blossom at any time. Don't know if they'd want to bring in an older player who could possibly get injured or have trouble playing the Suns torrid pace all year. That said, I wouldnt mind them bringing in an older back up PG and having him on the roster in addition to LB, but I dont know about replacing him.

One thing with the Suns management, the don't get emotionally attached to every player on the roster. Business comes first. Nash's demands trump any commitment to Barbosa.

The Suns worked out both Joey and Stephan Graham in private workouts during the playoffs, my preference is Joey as well.

I just got some clarification on the rumor from my boss. You guys are going to kill me.

Are you guys ready for this.

The point guard is Howard Eisley!!! I started laughing at him and told him that was impossible since we bought out his contract just to get rid of him. I can't believe that part of the rumor. Maybe Nash really wants him?

He also told me the player we are trying to trade up to get is a player we worked out once and is a stud. According to my boss this player has been staying in the Valley for the past week. Like I said before my boss doesn't have great knowlege about any players other than suns so he doesn't remember his name.

Who has a list of all the guys we worked out? Anyone in the 15 to 16 range?

I never had a problem with Eisley as the backup, I had a problem with how much he was being paid. For a one-year, bottom-end MLE, the Suns could do worse. If the Suns are moving up to mid-teens, I would expect they'd be going after Roko Leni-Ukic.

Sorry Folster, but I think us signing Howard Eisley is about as likely as the Diamondbacks winning the World Series this year! :D
