It was held up because the Cavs already had a standing deal with the Miami Heat involving the 46th pick. The Cavs got it from the Bulls two years ago and it was involved in the trade last year to get Darnell Jackson. The Miami Heat ended up with the Cavs' second round pick, No. 60, in that trade. In the swap for Jackson the Heat were assured the lower of the Cavs' two second round picks and to make that deal they had to promise they would not trade either pick.
I can't even fathom how bizarre that is. What the *&!#*! difference can it possibly make to Miami whether the Cavaliers move a garbage pick that the Heat traded them years ago?
If both sides wanted the original deal to work, they could just complete it after Cleveland takes Phoenix's player at #46 this evening. Then it's not a draft pick anymore, but the rights to a player. But the bottom line is that this really doesn't make any difference. The Suns have no reason to care whether they pick at 46 tonight or 56 a year from now.
