3-Time Pro Bowler Chris McAlister Available

Chris McAlister has been released by the Ravens.

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/02/16/ravens-dump-mcalister/

I think he'd be a good veteran addition to our DB corps. He's big and physical and played at U of A. His bad knees have cost him some speed, but overall he'd be an upgrade over Rod Hood and Eric Green (assuming Green stays). He'll be 32 this June.

What do you guys think?

I don't think we will see any money going out until the f/o knows what it is going to take to keep the core happy. Hood appears vulnerable (to me) as he was picked on numerous times and didn't look too great in the process....Green is as they say...toast...burnt toast.

Hood excelled in the nickle in Philly, which is how he landed his deal with us as a starter. I like Chris McAlister but I agree that they need to show a true effort to extending the core before they hand out new money

I can't see him signing for the minimum, which is what most teams will offer.
Watch him go to the Pats.

By McAlister being released means that he'd be getting a new, most likely less lucrative deal with a new team, right? I don't think we'd have to break the bank on him. I think the Cards have more leverage than he does right now. Maybe there will be a hometown discount.

I'd bite. He's injury prone, but is a good m2m guy. Could teach DRC some things, too.

NO NO AND NO.

I like Chris McAllister, he is still pretty good IMO, but he would get embarrassed on our current team IMO. He is also gonna want starter moneyt and he isn't worth that here IMO. I'd rather go after Dunta Robinson.

This is a guy who is strong and great with the press. He hasd been playing with great pass rushes his entire career and they have hidden his lack of speed. Every one of our DBs except for DRC is slow/bad in coverage for their position. We cannot afford to keep that trend going unless we want to start rushing the passer better. Their was a reason he was benched for most of the season last year, and it had everything to do with on-field play.

Now if we bring in Suggs and draft Tyson Jackson in the first, I may change my tune. :)

Do you know how much money Robinson will be seeking, Chris Gamble money. That would suck up a good chunk of our functional money, this isn't fantasy football

Oh BTW, we're 40+ million under the cap (50 if you count losing Q, Edge and Chike). If you dont think we can afford a guy who is about the 7-10th best player at his position in this FA class you should stop posting so much and read more.

We have 41 players under contract, read this it explains it really well. We don't have as much cap space as you may think. This isn't Super Market Sweep where you can run down the store picking up your man crushes.

Arizona's cap room appeared as big as a rhino's yawn: $41 million, most in the league. With free agent studs Albert Haynesworth, Terrell Suggs and Julius Peppers ready to be wooed, the Cardinals seemed to have plenty of room to operate. Turns out, Arizona has only 41 players under contract, and when you re-punch the calculators, the functional cap space is $20-$25 million, less than the San Francisco 49ers. And, oh yeah, Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson and defensive tackle Darnell Dockett want raises, too.

Do you really want to take something from ESPN as truth? Gimme two minutes and I'll be right back.

And excuse me if I dont get your analogy as I dont go to the grocery store to pick up men.

edit- I am gonna be late to my game, but most of our FAs are second and third stringers anyhow, who will be retained very cheaply. Also, Dockett is not getting a new deal this year. Adub will, but it wont hurt too bad. He will likely be in the 7-8 per range. Gabe Watson is gonna get a new deal after him I think. Breaston will also get a bump up. Losing Edge and Chike will take care of Kurt and Stevie B. After we resign guys like Gabe, Patrick and Sendlein do you really think guys like Beisel, R. Brown, T. Smith, Castille and St Pierre are gonna kill our cap?

41 players under contract. The remaining 12 aren't going to eat up 45-50 mill in cap space. You figure 6-7 of the spots are going to next years rookies and they will be on the cheap side.. That could go up to 9 rookies if Boldin(more cap space) gets dealt.Releasing Edge add 5+ mill more to the cap. That leaves 6-7 spots to fill out the roster. Two of those spots go to Warner and Dansby. Let's say they eat up a 17 mill cap hit. There is still going to be about 25+ mill left to sign new players and re-do AW and DD if they want.

One of those players is going to be Kurt Warner (probably) and I would assume a 2 year deal, probably 7-8 million dollar cap hit.... and that could be conservative

Isn't he somewhat irrelevent though since cutting Edge and Chike (or restructuring Chike) will give us more back this year than Kurt will earn this year?

crdsfanmd sees the Ravens more than most of us. If Justin doesn't think McAlistair can't play anymore, that's good enough for me. And Ozzie Newsome is a good GM and knows when to dump players.

Remember when we threw big money at Db Starks, another Newsome dump-off? I do.

5 years ago, I would have salivated at the chance to sign Chris McCalister, but he has been largely irrelevant for quite some time. Add the injury bug and you have quite the quandary on your hands.

However, if he is willing to accept a one year deal close to the minimum to add depth, it wouldn't be a horrible signing. As I have stated 100 times, we need secondary depth, both at CB and safety.

At this point in his career and after so many injuries McCalister is not worth more than a minimum NFL contract with some incentives.

That's true (but then again, I'm a Newsome-lover and I thought Savage was going to be dynamite since he worked under Newsome), but sometimes it's easier for a team to cut a player, especially at a high salary, then to get them to take a paycut or a demotion.

We're also assuming he'd play in deeper packages, not as a starter.
