The Celtics signed free agent guard Eddie House this afternoon to a one-year deal, apparently solving their need for a veteran backup to point guard Rajon Rondo.
In truth the 6-1 House, who averaged 8.4 points in 56 games for the Nets last year, is more of a shooter than a playmaker, which is indeed part of why Danny Ainge was attracted to him. On the positive side House shot .429 from 3-point range last season, and has indeed sunk the Celtics many times over the years from behind the circle.
On the other, he shot worse (.428) overall last season.
But House is not the only player who figures to fill in behind Rondo this season. Tony Allen, and even Ray Allen, have been discussed as point guard possibilities, in addition to rookie Gabe Pruitt out of USC.
The Celtics also signed Jackie Manuel, a 6-5 wing player who played for Los Angeles in the NBDL last season, and is considered a solid defensive player. He was named the ACC’s defensive player of the year two seasons ago while at North Carolina.
Next up in the free agent market is a big man. PJ Brown, the 37-year-old power forward who is reportedly seeking the full mid-level exception ($5.6 million) for his services, has probably priced himself out of the Celtics’ range.
The team is currently checking into the market for Dikembe Mutombo, who could fill in nicely as a backup behind Kendrick Perkins. Mutombo is currently in Africa, where he is on his annual mission at the head of the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program.

that's a solid move. If they actually pick up PJ Brown, I see no reason why the Celtics wouldn't be considered contenders not only in the East, but overall in the league.

Looks like PJ just forced his own retirement.

House is a very nice regular season player. I like the move for them. They just need some depth.

true MVP's don't let their team with the third best record of all time get their asses kicked in the first round of the playoffs by an 8 seed dude. but have fun trolling loser.

Eddie better not hope the Lakers trade Sasha Vujajic to the East.

Seriously, House is one-dimensional garbage time player who sucks in the playoffs when defenders actually close on shooters. He'll fill some gaps and give the C's some spark off the pine offensively here and there, but he won't play during the playoffs if the Celtics go anywhere. I'm surprised they didn't target Brevin Knight and C-Webb or someone like that splitting the MLE.

Didn't the Nuggets sign Brevin Knight? C-Webb will want more just part of the MLE.

Not sure, I was just expecting the Celtics to go after more veteran, high IQ role players to fill out the roster and gave C-Webb and Knight as examples.

I'd love to have both House and PJ Brown on the Suns. I know Mao said House stinks, and its true he's one dimensional, but thats a dimension that proved to be worth while in D'Antoni's offense, and with the signing of Hill and the moving of James Jones the Suns have less 3 point shooters than they did in the past, unless they plan on playing Piatkwoski a lot.

Countdown to Mao saying I only like House because he went to ASU and that Steve Kerr is somehow a super qualified GM and that I only hate him for his UofA ties (ignoring the fact that I think Jason Terry and Gilbert Arenas are great and I want Chip Hale to Manage the Dbacks)....5....4....3....2...

I'd of course like PJ Brown, we obviously do need a serviceable big man behind Amare if there's a hope at winning a title. I really don't see what the need for Eddie House is with Barbosa playing well. And buying Nash minutes is not a viable answer because Eddie needs someone dishing him the ball to score and he can't play in the postseason.

House was brought in as insurance just in case Barbosa had a hangover after his meltdown in the 2005 playoffs. He obviously didn't and the backup PG/bench offense was filled, hence no need for Eddie. This team needs defensive and rebounding bigs and anybody that can play D against a PG, neither of which applies to Eddie House. Having another shooter isn't going to help us against the Spurs because as we have seen, they simply do not allow the Suns to shoot them.

For all this talk about wanting players that can perform in the playoffs, I can't figure out why ANYBODY would want Eddie House on the Suns.

A guy like Brown wouldn't even play against the Mavs. The Suns can impose their will on the Mavs and make them adjust unlike the Spurs.

Right when I was about to post the Celtics look similar to the Suns Team a few years back (but the Suns had Nash)... I forgot it's the Offseason and they can easily add depth. I will say they aren't nearly as young as the Suns were and will attack outside in (jumpshooting Team) whereas the Suns had a beast in the paint in Amare...

Anywho, I'm hoping the Suns sign Brian Skinner now, with PJ wanting the moon...

PJ Brown is another type dirk player the guy can do anything shoot the 3 rebound he averges atleast 12 per game if i'm correct is a great team leade rlike dirk. He would be best fit for the mavs since we have more true leaders then anyother team in the league. Dont get me wrong nash is a great player but he has no where near the leadership of a dirk or jason terry. I really dont see you guys making the playoffs next year you guys maybe win 30 games you guys are just to old to really do anything. Now the mavs will make the playoffs easily since were a lot younger and have a great player in dirk who is a true leader.

Actually, if CELTS get Ryan Gomes back as reported, they will have a pretty darn good bench with Eddie House in the mix.

CELTS are going to the NBA FINALS for sure:

C Perkins - Scalabrine
F Garnett - Gomes
F Pierce - Powe
G Allen - T Allen
G Rondo - House

11th, 12th - Big Baby Davis & Gabe Pruitt

Damn good club, Danny Ainge.
