They’re not talking about getting rid of the conference title games. They’re just saying those games shouldn’t determine the top 4.

Which makes sense… the conference title games guarantee entrance into March Madness, but they don’t guarantee the 4 #1 seeds. Should be the same for football.
Nah...
By making the conference winners the top 4 seed you are using the actual football played to determine...the records and beating the in conference competition.

Take that away and you are giving power to the AP or whoever comes up with that arbitrary ranking...and that's exactly how the SEC stayed prominent in major bowl games the past couple decades... lots of folks out there legitimately believe a playoff can't be legit if Bama ain't in it...those people cannot be allowed to choose.

They go with a remotely fair system and suddenly the western united states has solid representation.

Maybe the money didn't decide it either

Do you believe that for the NCAA tourney also?
they deserve a spot in the playoffs, but I don't think they deserve a first round bye.

I mean, taking that to a logical conclusion, Clemson deserves a home game... even though they're a 12 seed?
Clemson doesn't deserve a home game but they should get one as the conference champ. It's not perfect in this scenario since they wouldn't have gotten in otherwise but I think you have to reward the conference champs to keep some advantage to playing in those games.

I think that's the way to go. The winner of a "major" CCG should punch a ticket to the playoff, but not necessarily get a top seed. Kinda funny that there is still so much controversy around the bracket selections. Some thought that there would be a lot less of it when the field expanded from just four teams.

The field will probably go to 14 or 16 games before the current agreement with ESPN expires in 2031, but there will still be debate over who the left-out 15th or 17th team is. :)
They could expand to 128 teams...and fans of teams 129 thru 150 will complain.... or think they got cheated because even though they have a worse record they beat team 126 head to head.
People will always complain

i have no problem with that. they probably shouldn't, just like conference title winners in March Madness aren't guaranteed #1 seeds.

NCAA basketball is a bit different in that all teams play in the conference tourney which allows for a potential non-tournament team to get hot, win their conference, and get into the tourney. If basketball conferences just took their top 2 teams by record to play in their conference championship then rewarding the winner with a bye wouldn't be that big of a deal.

This whole playoff system is so unfair. We need to go back to when the college football champion was determined by a fair and equitable process.
