Draft notes and rumorsposted: Friday, June 8, 2007 | Feedback | Print Entry
filed under: Insider NBA

Here are a few trade rumors along with updates from the NBA workout scene:

• One possible destination for Ron Artest this summer? Houston, to be reunited with his former coach Rick Adelman.

I'm told the Rockets have been quietly putting out feelers about Artest, and the price might be right. I hear it would cost the Rockets Bob Sura (he has only $1 million in salary protection next year), Kirk Snyder, Vasilis Spanoulis and this year's first-round draft pick.

With Artest entering a player option year on his contract in the summer of 2008, it may be time to take the risk.

• The Celtics' Danny Ainge traveled to Los Angeles on Wednesday to take a look at Yi Jianlian in a private workout. Yi worked out for nearly two hours in a gym by himself and then spent several hours with Ainge.

The same drill was repeated on Thursday with the Atlanta Hawks GM Billy Knight. On Saturday the Bulls will get a look at Yi.

The feedback from the workouts has been positive. Yi looks great in that environment. The question is whether he has the toughness to play that way when you put nine other players on the floor.

Next, Yi's camp will sit back and gauge feedback. If none of those teams commit to drafting Yi, then Sacramento likely will be the next team to visit.

If Boston is passing on Yi, I think that means we might see a trade coming. There's talk that the Suns -- to slash payroll -- might be willing to take the No. 5 pick, Theo Ratliff's expiring contract and Delonte West for Shawn Marion. That would make Paul Pierce happy.

With the No. 5 pick, the Suns could replace Marion with Yi, Jeff Green or Al Thornton. In the Suns' system, all three of those guys could play the four.

Another dark horse in the Yi sweepstakes might be Portland, which is trying to get another top 10 draft pick. As I've mentioned before, the Bulls seem like a possible trading partner, with Zach Randolph involved.

Tell Chad to stop reading our board.

The trade is fine but I am not sold on taking Yi at the #5.

Suns make this trade, take Noah, and start Diaw where Marion was. Suddenly Amare is the jump shooter on the front court...aaaah nightmare off season.

I swear they read various forums and get this crap from them, it has been floating around the net long before this article and it was all users coming up with the trade.

The real hot commodity trade right now is:

Marion + banks (yes in this trade they are willing) + 29th

for

Antawn Jamison + 16th (+ songaila if the suns want that or to pass to free up salary).

On that trade though I myself am completely in the middle, no idea if we should do it or not.

It would not suprise me in the slightest if sportswriters vulture from non copywrited sources. It is the oldest trick in the publishing world.

I think Diaw is going to come back a lot better next season. If we make this trade, I want someone like Brewer to play the three spot. Or, if the Camby trade goes down, you take Diaw off the bench.

The problem is how stupid they are, that is one of the older and weaker of the many marion trades I have seen and yet THAT is the one they decide to pick as the hot commodity trade?

Al Thornton 6'7 in shoes can play the 4?

I want a small forward that can play the 3 not the 4.

If Yi, Thornton or Green were to be our "4" lets just tank next season..

Luckily I can't see us trading Marion for nothing except a high pick that would be a gamble.

We would have to get some definitive contributors at least.

If Chad Ford thinks we would trade Marion for expiring contracts and a pick to reach for a guy like Al Thornton, that is just absolutely nuts. I would just rather keep Marion around and take my chances that he is going to opt out for a new contract after this season anyway.

I'd want Songaila if I were the Suns making that trade. They get absolutely hammered for luxury tax next season but then are in decent shape in a year once Jamison expires.

I really like Jamison, but the Suns would take a big step back defensively with this trade, and I'm not sure they can afford that.

Whether it would be a good trade or not, I don't know. But Jamison seems to be the type of player who would fit in D'Antoni's "system". He's not extremely athletic, but at this point in his career, he's a PF who can score, shoot threes and even rebound reasonably well.

His defense would definitely be a problem, though.

If the Suns trade up with the Celtics, I'd really want Horford.

I agree completely.

Horford pretty much looks the most 'NBA Ready' of all the top picks.

CAN HE RUN N GUN?!?

So if we lose marion, what are the odds of us getting Horford AND trading ratliff to Denver for Camby?

I 100% agree. Im not even sure what I would think about taking Yi at number 5, especially since his most likely age is 23 and not 19.

At 5 it would have to be Brewer or Horford I would think. The big question is what happens with the other 2 picks? The most likely scenario is that they keep one of them and sell the other, although I would hope they would make a big effort to turn them into a mid teen pick.

I would want Horford and I'm still undecided on Brewer or Thornton being the 2nd of the 3... Thornton is the man, and with Diaw on roster, the Suns wouldn't have-to worry about Thornton or Green starting at the 4 but playing the 4 ala Marion in situations.... I'd probably have Green ahead of Yi.

Remember if the Suns Trade Marion, then KT would still be on roster and with KT, Stat, and Diaw rotating at the 4/5 - the Suns just wouldn't need either playing too many minutes there.

Thornton is the same size as Marion and just as athletic and unless they feel (like Marion) that it's his best position; I wouldn't worry too much about Ford's comments.

Oh boy. Shawn Marion for an unproven rookie and Theo. Let's start the title party now. :sarcasm:

You guys should go listen to DX's first podcast. When asked which of the first round picks were most likely to bust, he picked Thornton.
