I knew he would turn out to be a good pro player. Does anyone think we have a package to put together for him? Maybe Barbosa or Jones or Diaw and picks?

The rumor is that Minnesota asked for Frye as part of a deal for KG and the Knicks said no.

Larry Brown "never plays rookies," so the fact that Frye is earning such heavy minutes pretty much proves that the Knicks are very, very high on him.

The University of Arizona is the best program when it comes to taking players and making them legitimate NBA players over the last ten or so years....

Channing Fryes progress from a senior in high school to playing is now is Exhibit A

I was thinking the same thing about Larry Brown.

First, Lute has been taking players and making them legitimate players since Sean Elliott. Also, I don't know how many programs could of developed Jud Buechler into an NBA player. When Jud was a freshman at the UofA, I never thought he would even make first-team Pac-10. The guy was a volleyball player first, basketball player second.

I found this in today's Arizona Daily Star regarding Larry Brown and Lute and the UofA:

New York Knicks coach Larry Brown last week gave Arizona's basketball program one of its best endorsements. After rookie Channing Frye scored 20 points in 24 minutes - his third straight game of 20-plus points - Brown told the New York media, "If you look in our league, these guys that come from the good programs that have stayed in school, their adjustments are so much easier than most. You play for Lute Olson, you respect the game. I think that's really the key."

I wrote before the draft I wanted the Suns to pick Frye but many here thought the Suns should pass on him. They thought Channing would go late first, some even thought second round. Frye would fit in the Suns system well. He runs the floor well, can shoot and plays defense.

I am very happy Channing and Salim are doing very well.

Sometimes another thing happens. Players who aren't really good NBA prospects get drafted out of schools like the UofA and Duke because they perform so well in college.

The great coaching gets mistaken for talent. I really thought this was going to be the case with Frye.

Exactly. For every Channing Frye, there is a Loren Woods.

I too was lobbying for them to draft Frye but I was foolish to think he was go to last to 21. I knew he would be successful.

Loren Woods was a mid second round draft pick who has been known throughout his career as a bit of a headcase. The scouts in this case obviously never thought much about Woods even though he went to Arizona. Same goes for guys like carlos Boozer, Chris Duhon, and Gilbert Arenas who were actually underrated coming out of college because of wheree they played.

I never though Channing would be peforming this well this early (especially with Larry Brown at the helm), but I always knew he'd make more of an impact that Woods only because he had a better head on his shoulders.

Talk about missing the point. I am saying that after they LEAVE college is when they really develop due to Lute coaching. I actually think they get drafted lower than they should due to sacrificing numbers to play with other good players...

Duke is the perfect parallal actually. Because while they are a better PROGRAM than us (wins, final fours etc...) we do a better job of coaching the players up. For the most part Duke players play below collegite production and for the most part UA plays better in the NBA than collegiate production. Its called Point Guard U for a reason. Lets look at second rounders drafted:

Arenas: do i even need to bring this up
Stoudamaire: one of the five best rookies playing
Woods: decent career but only a marginal player anyway, he wouldnt have even played in the NBA if he stayed at Wake.
Buchler: Good Career
Kerr: Good Career
Tolbert: Good Career

i mean damn, those last three would have a tough time getting respect at the Y let alone the NBA.

Now compare that players like
Magette: underachiever in my book, glad we took Shawn
Hurley and Jay Williams: injured but still
William Avery: who?
Laetnner: good career but he was THE MAN in college
Hill: COuld have been the difference maker on this list with health
Trajan Langdon, Ricky Price, Quinn Snyder, and on on and on

Put this way Wojo plays at UA he might be a fringe guy in the NBA...he gets no love as a Dukie. I remember reading this article about how Duke creates this family atmosphere where its ok to cry and blah blah. Tahts what i think the problem is. No toughness.....

You are right but i said last ten years on purpose....Since Miles Simon and Dickerson were kinda flops we have yet to put out a bad player or bust. Even Luke Walton was supposed to start in LA before he got injured. I still think he can be a good player. But Andre, Jefferson, Arenas, Bibby, Terry and the rest of the guys after 97 have all been NBA studs....

I thought Frye would be the next P.J. Brown, in his best-case scenario. As well as he's playing now, it looks like that might actually happen.

He'll be staying with the Knicks for as long as he keeps this up, of course. There's not much point in thinking up trades for any rookie who's playing well for his current team.

Before Dickerson got hurt he was playing very well in Vancouver. He signed that guaranteed contract of $65 million before his injury.

I think Arizona has more guys in the NBA right now than any other school. I remember reading that the UofA players in the NBA are bringing in $35 million a year combined. Just shows you how good a coach and teachher Lute is. It's too bad Ebi Ndudi(sp) did not honor his commitment because he sure would of benefitted playing at Arizona for a year or two.

There used to be a site that would sort all NBA players by the college they attended, but now I can't find it.

Anyway, Arizona has ten right now and Duke eleven, each with a handful of stars. Connecticut also has ten. I didn't check other schools.

I didn't expect Frye having such a good rookie-season but he is pretty-much a non-factor in the paint which can't be said about Brown.

He seems to be a bit more athletic version of Christian Laettner, IMO.

I'm not sure that Bibby, Arenas, Jefferson, Inguodala weren't just outstanding athletic recruits. UA does have a very good recruiting program. I think that these guys would have been good anywhere. Bibby was the only one to stay 4yrs, but he was a smart player coming into UA(his dad Henry was a pretty good point). Hasan Adams is also an excellent athlete who I expect to be a productive pro.

I always felt that Duke's players were overrated as NBA prospects. Winning in college does not necessarily translate to winning in the pros. The houston team with Drexler and Olajuwon couldn't win the NCAA, but were probably more accomplished than any of the players talked about in this thread. I do think that Lute teaches a philosophy closer to the NBA than the Duke system. UA players are often capable of pretty good defense(one on one) coming into the NBA.

Beware of players with good stats on bad teams. Defensive pressure tends to be low when the better teams are playing bad teams. Also, if he scores alot when the game is in control it doesn't mean much.

I agree with everything you said except for that BIG mistake about Bibby....He came out as a sophomore and was the number two pick.....think the Clippers wish they had a redo in that draft????

I take that back then. All those guys were ready for the pros in just a few years. These are very physically talented guys. I dont know if I can give Lute credit for that, though. Of the Dukies maybe Boozer, Battier, Hill, Duhon were physically talented. I think Laettner was physically too slow for 3/not strong enough fopr a 4 or 5.

i dunno about that. it's definitely true as far as guards go, but asu's forwards and particularly post players have been suspect at best.

i mean, you have to go back years to find zona post players in the nba, and even then most of 'em didn't live up to their billing or didn't develop well at uofa.

the best big man to ever come out of arizona? brian williams. that ain't saying much.
