Chappelle Spotted in Ohio
Wed May 25, 2005

Dave Chappelle's South African "spiritual retreat" has apparently reached its conclusion.

The Comedy Central stalwart, whose disappearance, alleged mental breakdown and sane and crack-free reemergence have been well chronicled, has reportedly returned to Yellow Springs, Ohio, where he makes his home for part of the year.

Residents of the small town have spotted the Chappelle's Show namesake running errands around town and generally going about his business since last week.

"He was just chilling and walking around with his friend," Cole Lindemuth, an employee of Ye Old Trail Tavern told the Dayton Daily News, after spying Chappelle last Thursday.

After Chappelle pulled his disappearing act late last month, production on Chappelle's Show was shut down. The expected start date for the third season, which had been slated for May 31, was pushed back indefinitely.

Explanations for the comedian's alleged meltdown included suggestions that he had been partying too hard and that stress had caused him to check into a psychiatric institute.

However, with the exception of the stress factor, all those rumors were false, according to Chappelle.

"I'm not crazy. I'm not smoking crack. I'm definitely stressed out," Chappelle told Time magazine in the only interview he's granted since his impromptu retreat.

Chappelle told the magazine that he first halted production on the show late last year after he was dissatisfied with the initial batch of third-season skits.

Comedy Central subsequently bumped the series' return date from February to May, blaming the delay on Chappelle's health, as well as on a lack of material.

Despite the extra time to work on the series, Chappelle was still unhappy with the creative direction of his show.

"My personal feeling is I didn't like the direction of the show. I was trying to explain it to people, and no one was feeling me. There's a lot of resistance to my opinions, so I decided, Let me remove myself from this situation," he told Time.

"So I figured, let me just cut myself off from everybody, take a minute and pull a Flintstone--stop a speeding car by using my bare feet as the brakes."

Despite the fact that the comic has returned to the United States, the future of Chappelle's Show remains murky. The network has said it does not expect the show to return this year, but does expect that it will be back at some point.

For now, Chappelle's Comedy Central timeslot is being filled by new episodes of Reno 911! and a new variety show from D. L Hughley called Weekends at the D.L..

Chappelle's spokesman, Matt Labov, had little insight to offer on his client's state of mind.

"We have no update and I won't speculate on when the show might come back," Labov told MTV.com.

Fans of the comedian who are currently suffering from withdrawal can console themselves by picking up the Chappelle's Show Season Two DVD, which was released Tuesday.

The DVD of the show's first season has sold more than 2.8 million copies since its February 2004, making it the best-selling TV DVD package ever.

Meanwhile, Chappelle's fellow Yellow Springs residents are simply glad he's amongst them once more.

"He's from here and he's part of the community," storeowner Cyndee Perkins told the Dayton Daily News.

Chappelle's Show Is 'Done,' Murphy Says
Wed Aug 3, 2005

Time to face the facts: Dave Chappelle's hit Comedy Central series isn't coming back, says one of its stars. "`Chappelle's Show' is over, man. Done," comic Charlie Murphy told TV Guide. "It took me a long time to be able to say those words, but I can say it pretty easy now, because it's the truth."

Chappelle's sudden "spiritual retreat" to South Africa on the eve of his show's third season has left the series in limbo since May. About half of a new season had been filmed before Chappelle left, Murphy said.

"I'm disappointed it ended the way it did, but I'm not angry with anybody," he said. "`Chappelle's Show' was like the Tupac of TV shows. It came out, it got everybody's attention, it was a bright shining star, but it burned out and for some strange reason, it burned out quick."

Comedy Central has always said the door is open for Chappelle to return, spokeswoman Aileen Budow said Wednesday.

Network chief Doug Herzog met with Chappelle on June 3, but that has been their last communication, she said.

Murphy, the older brother of comic Eddie Murphy, said his two seasons with Chappelle made him a star.

"Now I can go out and do stand-up," he said. "I'm getting movie offers. It's off the hook. Me getting to the next level or whatever's going to happen is going to come from the next things I do, but `Chappelle's Show' served its purpose and I'll always be grateful."

That is strange because at some point CC had said that all they were missing were the standup intros, that all the principle shooting had been done.

/quietly awaiting a $100 boxset including the Season 3 stuff

I just started watching it. Carlos Mencia is funny in exactly the obscene and politically incorrect way I like.

They made a joke about this on American Dad last night. There was a Dave Chappelle "Freak Out" Tent.

More Chappelle's Show Coming in 2006
Source: Variety
December 5, 2005

Variety says that Dave Chappelle is coming back to Comedy Central -- sort of. The network revealed Sunday that it will air previously-recorded sketches from the comedian as part of what is being billed as season three.

The sketches will be shown first on Comedy Central's online broadband network, Motherload, and later broadcast on the cable network. The broadcast will take place sometime in 2006.

Chappelle has been on an open-ended hiatus for about ten months, with taping of the third season of his Chappelle's Show suspended indefinitely. Sources close to the series were recently quoted that they did not believe he would ever return to the program.

Chappelle signed a two-year deal with Comedy Central shortly before he decided to suspend taping.

Chappelle Opens Up on "Oprah"
Friday February 3, 2006

By Sarah Hall

He wasn't crazy. He wasn't on drugs. He presented no threat to Oprah Winfrey's onset furniture.

In his first televised interview since fleeing the set of his hit Comedy Central show last spring, Dave Chappelle sat down with the Queen of Daytime Friday in an attempt to explain the reasons behind his abrupt departure.

With the premiere of the third season of Chappelle's Show only weeks away, the comedian suddenly vanished without explanation, forcing Comedy Central to shut down production on the series and igniting speculations that his hard-partying lifestyle had resulted in a total meltdown.

Chappelle eventually surfaced in South Africa, where he was rumored to have checked himself into a psychiatric hospital for treatment, a report he has denied.

According to the comedian, neither drugs nor insanity were behind his decision to cut and run from Chappelle's Show. Stress, on the other hand, was a major factor.

"I wasn't crazy but it is incredibly stressful," Chappelle said.

After Chappelle signed an unprecedented $50 million contract in August 2004, carrying him through the third and fourth seasons of Chappelle's Show, he said he began to feel like too many people were trying to control him and the direction of his show.

"I felt in a lot of instances I was deliberately being put through stress because when you're a guy who generates money, people have a vested interested in controlling you," Chappelle said.

The comedian said he finally decided a spiritual retreat was in order, though he neglected to tell anyone but his brother of his plans.

"I would go to work on the show and I felt awful every day, that’s not the way it was," he said. "I felt like some kind of prostitute or something. If I feel so bad, why keep on showing up to this place? I'm going to Africa. The hardest thing to do is to be true to yourself, especially when everybody is watching."

After he returned from Africa, Chappelle continued to avoid the spotlight, retreating to his farm in Yellow Springs, Ohio. In June, he resumed making sporadic standup appearances around Los Angeles.

The comedian told Winfrey that he had not ruled out returning to Comedy Central to complete the third and fourth seasons of Chappelle's Show--provided that some changes were made.

"I do want to do my show again provided, one, I can make the proper work environment," Chappelle said.

In the interest of being "socially responsible," he said he wanted to begin donating a portion of the proceeds from his DVD sales to charity.

"I want to give," Chappelle said. "I don't want the money. I don't want the drama. I just want to do my show. I want to have fun again."

Comedy Central made it clear Friday that the network will welcome the return of its wayward star. "Dave is a comedic genius whose work we truly value, and the door is always open to him," the network said in a statement.

In December, the network said the four episodes of Chappelle's Show completed by the comedian before his departure would hit the air this spring.
