Diaw for May
Diaw + #24 for #8
Banks + ATL pick + 24/29 for #8
maybe?
Diaw plus Piatkowski for either Mike Miller or Stromile Swift. Memphis is enough under the cap to absorb Diaw's deal. Memphis could use their number 4 pick to replace either one.
Piatkowski won't be traded for many reasons. The Suns literally lured him out of retirement.
The only reason to include Piatkowski in any trade would be to make salaries work. No team has Piatkowski as a target, so they'd have to accept that he could retire rather than report...but I don't think he has a no trade clause.
Banks (approx $4mil x 4 years) and Diaw ($9mil x 5 years) are now liabilities (not assets) since their contracts are guaranteed, and they exceed their production value.
Any trade to unload Bank's salary would have to be along the lines of:
Banks + #24 for nothing (and I can't think of many teams under the cap that would even do that). Other than that team's may take his contract if he's part of a deal involving another player they really covet (like Amare or Marion).
Well, Marion to MIL for Simmons/Gadzuric/#6 works and we can either get Noah or trade back down with ATL (if Conley's available at #6) #6/Banks for #11/Jones/Lue to get Thornton....
Nash-Lue
Bell-Barbosa
Simmons-Thornton-JJones
Stoudemrie-Diaw-SJones
Thomas-Gadzuric
why not just make it:
Marion/Banks/#24 for Simmons/Gadz/Skinner/#6
and then use the #6 for Conley ourselves. it keeps Atlanta from getting better, and at the same time addresses a need we have.
ATL pick for #8. The ATL pick could end up being worse than #8, but it could also end up being the #1. The Suns may be better off having a guaranteed decent pick now to help in a title run, whereas the Bobcats may prefer to roll the dice to get a stud next year. In addition, having that pick available for trades next year could help them if they are no longer under the cap and want to upgrade a player on the roster.
No one is giving up a lottery pick in this year's deep class...for a future pick in a weaker draft.
If Joe Johnson doesn't get injured, Atlanta may not even be in the lottery...add a healthy JJ plus not one...but two lottery picks...and Atlanta's pick should be middle of the pack at best.
The Hawks are in a great position to have a much better record next year, but it's no foregone conclusion. Many teams with top 3 picks have sucked just as much the next year. They have a legitimate chance of sucking as long as they draft poorly and don't trade for a guy like Zach Randolph.
Exactly, I have no idea why folks think Atlanta will make the playoffs next year just adding a few rookies? In a few years they may field a nice team, but not next year. They need leadership more than anything, Joe Johnson is no leader. I feel pretty good about having their pick next year, it will be much better than ours and might even prove to be in the top 3 when all is said and done.
Same thing was said about Chicago a couple of years ago.
