I have no knowledge about Melton but yeah, I don't think Chriss draws any interest in the first round in a re-draft.

Nah, he'd still go in the first round, probably late teens or something. That draft ended up being pretty bad.

If there were a way for Chriss to have re-entered the 2018 draft, after everyone saw what he did his first two years in Phoenix, he would still be taken in the first round, probably in the teens. There's no one in the league that believes Melton to have greater upside than Chriss, except maybe a couple of marks in the Phoenix front office.
I am not sure that is the case. Chriss regressed substantially last year. Holmes is probably going to be a better version of Chriss.

I don't know what Holmes has to do with it. He'll be 25 years old in a month. The issue isn't whether there were better PFs available than Chriss, but whether it made sense to dump Chriss for a true rookie with less potential.

Less potential? Melton would have been a lottery pick if he didn't miss a year. Chriss has shown what he is and will be. Lazy and unmotivated. You think way more of him. What has he shown you?

I'm not so sure of that. While he has some potential, Melton's performance at USC the year before was pretty pedestrian.

Chriss was a lottery pick while Melton was a 2nd rounder. He wasn't a lottery pick and he missed all of last season. Michael Porter Jr barely saw more time than him but still managed to be a lottery pick because he was considered a top prospect, even with injury concerns. Melton wasn't viewed the same way or he wouldn't have fallen as far as he did because the reason he missed last season wasn't because of his own health, which would effect his NBA career, it was an NCAA eligibility rule which doesn't matter to NBA teams. If he was talented enough he wouldn't have dropped as far as he did. Please provide some evidence of him being a potential lottery pick if you're going to continue to make that claim because it's just not true based on where he was picked.

For a freshman he had a pretty solid year.

8.3 points per game on 43.7% from the field, 28.4% from three and 70.7% free throws, 3.5 assists and 1.8 turnovers per game, and he wasn't even Honorable Mention All Pac 12 Freshman Team. Only his rebounding from the guard spot (4.7 per game) and defense (Honorable Mention All Pac 12) were of any positive note.

Imo he would have been a lottery pick based on hustle and D alone.SI had him at 26https://www.si.com/nba/2018/05/21/2018-nba-mock-draft-combine-lottery-projections-deandre-ayton-luka-doncic-donte-divincenzo

His shooting was an issue but again, for a freshman, those are pretty solid numbers. And watching him play, I wouldn't call him mediocre or pedestrian. I have no idea if his skills will translate but the buzz about him his freshman year was almost always positive.

The question isn't if his numbers are solid, it's if he was good enough to be a lotto pick. I'd say, no, not close.

Again, if the rest of the league thought that way, he wouldn't have fallen into the 40s.

He has shown that he had enough talent to be taken in the top ten, and has some attitude problems that may make it impossible to realize that talent.

Yeah, his shooting woes would have likely kept him out of the lottery and maybe even out of the first round. But if he really has improved his shot, the rest of his game is intriguing. A lot of guards do make that leap from freshman to sophomore star, we just don't know if he's one of them.

I, too, have forgotten about Holmes the last month or so. The highlights were great but as Phraze mentioned Chiss had some similar highlights. The biq question i have is about his normal D. He seems to have a good motor so that is step 1. On the other hand Philly let him go for cash. I was in favor of shedding Chriss any way we could, for things that led us to say his attitude was bad. Holmes will have to earn his PT, another point in his favor vs. Chriss. We'll see what we have.

is there anyone here that would be pimping Melton as a lottery level talent if he was still on the Rockets? Would they even be saying Houston got a solid contributor and key depth making their bench better in their battle against OKC?

Not off of what I know right now. If I'd worked him out and was confident he'd solved his shooting woes, yeah, I'd be pimping him as a lottery level talent. But solid all around point guards that can't shoot are backups in today's NBA.

Of course not because this is phx I could care less who the hell they draft nor would we discuss it. But since he is now a sun im highly intrigued. Again its about him and chriss. And we watched him go nuts in the summer league while chriss did what he does best. Nothing

Well, no. We wouldn't care because we don't follow everyone else's picks. And that kid wasn't going to see the light of day playing behind Harden, Paul, and Gordon.

He was 17th on my draft board on the day of the draft. Granted, I'm working mainly off of highlights, a ton of articles, and minimal games...but I'm devoted enough that I actually create a ranking. Since then, he's looked great in Summer League.

So I was a fan before the Suns got him, and I think he has a lot of potential. I was rooting specifically for the Suns to take him at 31. (Okobo was my next highest rated prospect at that point.) I doubt he's ready to be a big contributor as a point guard this year though, and I think he almost certainly would not have been a big contributor to the Rockets.

This is funny in a way. Fan's look at trades as straight transactions. GM's look at the roster that they are trying to build.

BK, Chriss, Dudley

for

Anderson, Melton, Holmes

Who is the best player, right now of those six? Has to be Anderson. And he is a vet presence this team needs. He is by far the best shooter of the bunch.

Who is the second best player of the six? I think its likely Holmes. Holmes has Chriss athleticism with a better motor. If not its close. If you want to argue BK, well, fine, but evaluations are all over the board. I was hoping that BK would turn it around and be effective, but the window had to be small. Looks like it was just not going to happen.

Amen. Best argument.

I'm with you on the last paragraph. The 76ers parted with Holmes for only a million dollars. This has to say something although I'm hoping he fulfills a need.
Maybe he pulled a Lou Amundson or a Frank Johnson? [emoji848][emoji16]

This trade comes down to who is the better GM. All the players involved have issues.

McDonough? or Morey?

My money is on Morey.

An evaluation of this trade should be in order at the all star break.
