I'm not waiting! How can we lose? We got rid of Knight and Chriss! It doesn't matter how they turn out for the Rockets, they were net negatives for the Suns. We even got players in return. At the moment they represent possibilities.

I'd certainly expect Morey to win a trade with McDonough but from my POV we already won this one.

I suspect Morey won the trade but the Suns accomplished what they wanted as well... ridding themselves of two players they didn't want in Chriss and Knight. I'm sure McDonough extensively researched trade options and this was the best trade available for the Suns.

The way the Suns were looking to add a veteran player like Redick, perhaps Anderson might have been the next best option made all the better by removing a couple of players that didn't fit.

Who is the best player, right now of those six? Has to be Anderson. And he is a vet presence this team needs. He is by far the best shooter of the bunch.

I am unswayed in my belief that Anderson is a net negative - injury prone, over-the-hill, huge defensive liability... and monstrously overpaid. Sure he can shoot some, assuming he can stay healthy. But anything he contributes offensively is certain to be deducted (and then some) defensively.

I know everyone has been obsessed for years now with the Suns needing a "stretch 4," as if that is some kind of magic bullet that will turn them into the next Warriors. I guess that has clouded judgment in the NBA as to what comprises an actual valuable asset. Imagine if we had gone out and signed Channing Frye to a two year 55 million dollar deal this off-season. Would anyone be celebrating that as a brilliant move by the front office? That is pretty much where we are with the Anderson trade, minus two trade pieces that may or may not have been put to better use. Unless, I guess you assume Melton is a can't miss contributor, as some seem to think.

This trade comes down to who is the better GM. All the players involved have issues.

McDonough? or Morey?

My money is on Morey.

An evaluation of this trade should be in order at the all star break.
Cmon. That’s backwards. You don’t evaluate trades by the GMs, you evaluate GMs by the trades.

IMO, the trade boils down to finally finding a taker for Knight's contract and potentially getting a couple of players that might be useful. If the trade doesn't work out the Suns should be in no worse position. I'm not expecting much so I will not be disappointed.

Injury prone--averages 62 games a year. OK
Defensive liability--better defender than Chriss or Knight IMO. Opinions on players' defense are so polar. If they are not fantastic, they are horrible. Anderson is neither.
Over-the-hill--30 years old. No. He has 6-7 more years, especially with his style of play.
Overpaid--sure. But with the contract restructure, not a risk and really doesn't hinder us from signing anyone else.
Can shoot some--Um. some. No. A lot. Yes.
Good offense outweighed by bad defense--no. Look at who he is replacing.
Obsessed with finding a "stretch 4"--not here. 90% of the talk has been about a pg. In fact, the trade took most here by surprise. We were not looking for a stretch 4.
Melton as a "can't miss contributor"--another exaggeration. Have not seen that here. At most, some consider Melton a more intriguing prospect than Chriss.

So. It looks like the only thing I agree with is "injury prone" and "overpaid."

Not overpaid when you consider the fact that he wAs flipped for a player making the same amount with no tangible skill whatsoever.

Anderson makes $6 million more than Knight this year. That's not close to "the same amount." He is horribly overpaid, but the Suns were so desperate (irrationally) to get rid of Chriss that they decided to spend 20% of their payroll on a guy with no future who will make them worse.

True but Suns don’t need cap space this year. Next season doesn’t Anderson have a buyout that’s the same as BK salary?

They paid 3mil for Melton.

This is about right. The difference in the trade for the 2018 season (without Melton signing) is $2,584,136.

2018 season:

Anderson- $20, 421, 546

(-) Deduct contracts

Knight- $14, 631, 250
Chriss- $ 3, 206, 160

Difference: $2,584,136

________________________________

2019 season:

Anderson buyout- $15.6 million

Knight salary owed- $15,643,750

Man you just love Chriss. And there is no way this trade makes them worse. Knight was a net negative on the court. Anderson is a better player than Chriss at this moment, period.

And the Suns had failed to do their homework and drafted him 6th when he fell to them in the 1986 draft.
There was a reason teams were passing on him.

How can you say “irrationally” when you no insight into what went on behind the scenes?

That's the report, but the $6 million difference this season is actual money, being paid by someone. It's not only a number on a spreadsheet. And if the Suns' plan is to buy Anderson out, then they'll end up paying $35 million for one year of his services, which is really an overpayment.

Again, no more (or barely more) than knight and Chriss. They had to pay someone. They chose to pay someone with no attitude problems. It's flushing money down the toilet either way. I suspect there were behavioral issues with one or both of them. I maintain that the trade had nothing to do with Anderson or even Melton, but rather, with removing Chriss and Knight from the team.

And, as I have said before, I hope you are right, because that is the only possible justification for the trade.

Flip-side of my argument is... why not just waive both and create two roster spots instead of getting Melton and Anderson? THAT is the only mystery in my mind.

There's no harm in taking a flyer on Melton, so maybe Anderson was the price for that. That a pretty expensive scratch ticket, though.

I only care if it keeps them from getting a free agent. I don’t see that happening.

The Suns still had to pay Chriss and Knight so they only had to pay about $2.5 million more to acquire Anderson and the rights to Melton this season. It's not $6 million.

As near as I can tell from the Suns' baffling ticketing website, a lower bowl season ticket is somewhere in the $4000-5000 range. So you're talking about taking the revenue from more than 1000 season ticket purchasers and throwing it away. What kind of message does that send to the fans who forked over that hard-earned money?
