The Diamondbacks might have traded Paul Goldschmidt over the winter, but they ended up receiving very similar production from the first baseman who eventually replaced him.
After
hitting a pair of home runs on Saturday night, rookie Christian Walker finished with 29 homers and an .824 OPS. In his first year with the Cardinals, Goldschmidt hit 34 homers with an .822 OPS. The two also had similar batting averages and on-base percentages.
Granted, it was a down year for Goldschmidt, given his standards, but Walker still ranked among the Top 10 first basemen in wins above replacement, according to Baseball-Reference.
“It’s amazing,” Walker said. “I definitely proved a lot to myself this year. A long season, my first full season in the big leagues. Obviously, there’s some room to grow and get better and adjust some things in the offseason, but I do feel like I need to take a sec and appreciate the year I’ve had and where I’ve come and the past few years. Being here is awesome right now.”
