A dreaded foreign film that oddly isn't nominated for Best Foreign Film, but IS nominated for Best Director and Screenplay.

This is really just a brutal film. City of God refers to the slums of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Basically, it's about a select group of kids that grow up in gangs. Very similar to our gangs here. It can get quite disturbing, as it's hard to watch 12 year old kids kill each other with automatic weapons.

Of course, the movie is in Portuguese, but it is extremely well-made. It's not as accessible as Black Hawk Down, but the style is certainly comparable. (with the unsaturated picture and herky-jerky camera movement)

Great movie. Apparently it was based on a true story which makes it all the more interesting.

I watched this a couple of years ago. I thought it was an amazing movie. It really made me sick to my stomach. The way that it was filmed made me feel like I was right there in the slum.

That little boy sobbing when his toe was shot off....MAN....he was freaking crying like he was going to die.

I love that the movie used a lot of people from the slum as amateur actors and extras.

The movie has a tough, real, gritty feeling to it.

It is a fantastic one.

I loved this movie also. I saw it a year ago. I like the way you learn about each character's "life story" as the movie develops.
