Meh, he did the right thing IMO. If you cant find a way and your family is in danger, get there at all costs.

Prison for moving violations?

So, if I understand correctly, he has a young daughter with a pre-existing condition that requires some kind of medication that he keeps at the house. He then goes out without leaving instructions for the babysitter on what to do if a problem arises. He then doesn't tell the babysitter how to administer the medication when she calls. He then can't find his own wife at a concert and decides to drive home.

Too bad the police officer's spokesman didn't release a statement on Twitter, too.

You've jumped to a couple of conclusions that aren't supported by the statement. Which said the sitter panicked. We don't know if he left instructions and we don't know if she followed them either on paper or when he talked to her on the phone.

If the sitter panics all the instructions in the world aren't going to do any good.

(Were I him, I'd have called 911 and had them go to the house, but if he was drinking he probably wasn't thinking clearly. My guess is his instincts as a dad took over and he wanted to get to his daughter ASAP.)

I'm not willing to take a statement from a PR guy as an accurate description of what happened that night. Maybe more details will come out soon, but I'm not going to buy into the heroism spin, especially if it turns out he was drunk.

Would anyone giving him a pass also give cops a pass to fire their weapons blindly into a crowd because a criminal is escaping through the crowd? He deserves the time.

He had an uncountable number of options. He could have called 911, or a family friend, etc.

THIS ONE IS FOR YOU KOC. TIM WE DID IT.
Nobody has listed his BAC yet right? he could have got DUI for still driving under the limit, you can get a dui for nyquil....

plus it stated he was drinking we are now all assuming he was stumbling in...
If you are a father, and until you are in that situation really its hard to say, but if he SAVED his daughters life then he did the right thing.

It was greater than .20. Super extreme DUI.

We don't have anything that says he saved his daughter's life. His "statement" didn't even mention how his daughter is doing.

A cynic might speculate that his handler found out he was beyond wasted when he drove home, then told him to come up with a good reason why he did it and why his wife couldn't drive.

A cynic might also question how his punishment is a few nights in jail.

But, hey, he's a football player.

More likely explanation (supported by no proof) is that he got into a tiff with the wife and drove home wasted. I find that more believable than the also unsupported claim about his daughter and the babysitter.

However, I don't think he got off any lighter than anyone else. I know several people who got off lighter than him actually with a super-extreme DUI. And AZ has a very strict DUI law in my opinion. Depending on circumstances, they can give less jail time and more community service, more home detention, and more alcohol classes.

For someone like him, just personally speaking, I'd rather see him do more community service, whatever that may entail. The home detention in his case is irrelevant, and so is the jail time. To most of us jail time is unbearable, but I can assure you that in many many cases it is preferable to some of the alternatives. Even alcohol classes and an interlock on your car, in my opinion, are a bigger punishment than jail time. I have had an extreme DUI in Arizona, and I can tell you, I'd rather have jail time than continued surveillance and an interlock and alcohol classes. With those other 3 they monitor your alcohol intake all the time and it can last 6 months to a year or more. I imagine he got a lot of that and less jail time. I don't think it's a bargain, I'd rather do the time and get it over with. The rest of it lasts, what-seems-like, forever.

So I'm a little confused.

From the article it said it happened in April 2011 but it is just being reported now?

And it sounds like he is serving time in PA instead of AZ? An AZ .20 gets you 45 days in jail.

Why did it take a year to put him in prison? And why didn't the Cards cut his butt for an AZ extreme DUI?

If my child's life is on the line not only would I drive drunk as needed, I would also shoot maim or break whatever law it takes to make sure they are safe. Extenuating circumstances to be sure but the truth nonetheless. If what Haggans says is true (and him getting busted going through a red light points to that) I truly feel for him.

I'd accept the repricussions as they came. Laws don't apply if it's my children's health and safety in question.

This. There is not a law in the world that comes before family. There are way too many laws to begin with anyway.

Where did you hear about it being from a pre-existing condition?

A lot of people agree. There was a father here in Texas just no-billed by a Grand Jury on a charge of murder after the father beat a guy to death who he caught molesting his daughter.

“I would like to set the record straight as to the reason for me spending time in Westmorland County jail. On April 21st of 2011, I was at a concert with my wife when I got a call from our babysitter that our 5-year-old daughter was having trouble breathing,” Haggans said in the prepared statement. “She has been on medicine and inhalers since she was born because of her under developed lungs. The sitter was panicked.

I'm not sure whether this fact helps his story or not.

and if that's the case, he should have been with his daughter. Or at the very least, have a qualified person taking care of her. If he was so concerned, he shouldn't have left his daughter and gone out and got smashed at a concert... my $0.02

That's how I feel too, but I can also see how her condition would scare him into going home when a supposedly panicked babysitter called.

What story does he have to help? He is spending time in jail. He admitted to his mistake. What more could you ask for? Everything I've seen from Haggan has been pretty stand-up so why is all this skeptism necessary?

"He should have been with his daughter." Really? He and his wife don't deserve some away time? For all we know the sitter could have been their sitter for a while and for whatever reason panicked this time. I can make assumptions too... Another assumption I have is that I doubt that sitter will be hired by Haggan again...

Some of you people are just way to perfect for me...

so if you have a kid with a medical condition you will devote the rest of your entire life to sitting at home with them? I can understand the hire someone competant comment but the rest is just dumb. Parents need nights to themselves here and there.

don't get me wrong. I'm not bashing on the guy for the way he handled it. He made a mistake, he's taking his punishment. My comment was more directed to the folks of the "if my kid was in trouble, I'd drive with a .55BAC, run every red light, yadda yadda" point of view. If you're so concerned about your kid with a pre-existing medical condition, take care of them. He could have gone out and not got obliterated, he chose to do that instead. I actually really like Haggans, and think he's been nothing but an asset to this team both on and off the field. He screwed up, it happens. But I don't see any way it's justified
