...The joy is competition...

This is the first time I've seriously questioned if JG is the right guy.

MF'er, if your goal is to compete, go coach your kids. This is the NFL, winning is the joy.
What progress did we see in last few games of the season? Letting up an inexcusable comeback? Beating an awful team? Getting beat by an awful team? Cmon gannon. Do better.

Yeah, that is a very, very bad look. The only thing he should be saying is nothing, as in remaining tight-lipped, or expressing extreme displeasure on how the team has collapsed. I want to hear words like unacceptable, inexcusable, undisciplined, etc. "The joy is in the competition?" MFer please!
Eh read the article. He takes responsibility. I think he’s talking about the last two games and playing to win when he’s speaking about the joy of competition. Makes sense.

The 49ers will probably try for Darnold and move on from Purdy. I would draft a qb in round 1.

Huh? They had Darnold last year, he was the backup to Purdy all year. And he barely beat out Trey Lance to be the backup.

Then elaborate, because I look at this roster and I have a hard time figuring out how we are a 7 win team with it, and the QB has looked like crap for some time

Team just lost to a Carolina Panthers team in a must-win game to stay alive in the playoff race — not competitive
Every starter on this defense is NFL quality, better than last year’s, but still terrible results. We’re missing maybe one defensive starter from the beginning of the year — not a Patchwork defense
Kyler is mid, even of late — not poor QB play
We played last game with our fourth OT, OLB, and RB — plenty of depth

We have to stop celebrating leaders who manage to keep us above the Saints and Raiders in the playoff hunt. This was the expectation. Gannon has a C grade for this season.

agreed. I do thing Gannon gets us to play hard and frankly now that I've seen the whole first quarter I think it's reasonable to say at least 3 of the calls in that quarter, the offsides on Marv, the roughing on the Panthers TD drive and the PI on Budda on the same drive were all bad calls.

But there's no way that game should get from 7-0 to 20-3 before we started to play and much of that is on Gannon. It was a playoff game for us in a sense and we spotted them a 17 point lead .

That was their best offensive game of the season, fairly significantly so.

Opinions formed on the basis of a tweet generally don't age well. The entire article puts things in context.

I hear a coach holding himself accountable. I know some want seppuku, but really what else are these guys supposed to say to the media? There are too many possibly affected parties to be anything other than drab and plain, and full of cliches.

i understand your frustration but none of what you typed makes much sense. You received a brief stint of good football from a team who is clearly in the midst of an extensive roster turnover.

Most likely this team will finish with twice as many wins as the previous season....that is progress.

Next year is the year they take a leap in my opinion.

MO's draft picks have been quality. There is plenty to build on
the team progressed, not Kyler. I would say Connor had to do more with the offense being better not the midget

I think he's saying the team this year is better than the team was at the same point in time.
Last 8 games of last season we went 3-5. Last 8 games of this season, we’re likely going 3-5, possibly 2-6 so that claim has its issues, IMO.

But what troubles me most about this season is that the same big questions we faced at the end of last season are the same going into next season.

Can Kyler actually be good?

Who can we get to rush the passer?

Who is our number 1 WR?

Within the next two years we will need a new QB, preferably one that can run when needed but is physically built in the traditional mold of an NFL QB. Can stand in the pocket, take a hit and make all the throws

I like Gannon. I think they've done pretty well with a limited roster and integrating a bunch of young guys into key roles. Sure, the playoffs would have been nice, but big picture-wise, I think he's doing a good job, has the team playing hard, and on the right track.
As much as there is disappointment with the way the season is ending, very few were expecting a playoff contending team this year.
I don't know for sure, but I find it hard to believe there is a team that played a tougher first 8-10 games than the Cards and they were 6-4. They have been disappointing down the stretch but I think that's where the lack of overall talent and relying on young guys catches up with teams.
They hold on to beat Minnesota and take care of business in Carolina, we're having a completely different conversation. But they didn't and here we are. Those are a 1-point loss and an OT loss on the road.

I couldn't believe he said that. I almost need a retraction from him with that garbage.

I agree. It's not like he has the stacked D that he had in Philly and I think he generally gets more out of the D than one would expect.

The offense is another story. I like Petzing's run game, but the passing concepts just aren't good enough.
