Urban: Hiking mountain becomes badge of honor for players

Cardinals players (from right to left) Greg Toler, Sean Morey, Rashad Johnson and Cody Brown make their way up Camelback Mountain last week.

By 8:15 a.m., the sun is already beating down on whoever has decided to hike Camelback Mountain’s Echo Canyon trail on this day before America’s birthday. That includes the Cardinals’ 2009 draft class and Pro Bowl special teamer Sean Morey, along with strength and conditioning coach John Lott.

The climb, which is listed on multiple websites at about 2.4 miles round trip (although Lott and Morey insist the hike pushes past 2½ miles when it’s all said and done), has become an anchor of Lott’s rookie strength training program since last year. Sure, he puts the rookies through various sprints and box jumping and the like at the team’s Tempe facility in their month working beyond organized team activities, once the veterans have all but disappeared for the summer. But it’s the hike that creates the memories.

“Nothing they have done,” Lott said, “is like this.”

In somewhat related news...
My older brother blew a good chunk of that mountain off with the mother of all pipe bombs when we were kids. :biglaugh:

This was 20+ years ago btw.
Getting caught with the crap he used to build, in this post 9-11 world would probably put you in prison for 40 years.

My wife and a friend of ours hiked all of Camelback on Thanksgiving night in 1993. There were early morning hikers just starting up the trail when we came down. It was and still is illegal to hike at night, but it was a blast.

Our whole family hikes it every Thanksgiving morning. We see old ladies going up and coming down talking about the green beans they have in the oven.

Greenbeans in the oven??
Sounds like one of those ancient sportscaster expression that no one really understands.

"Greenbeans in the oven."

As in:

"Looks like Jim Bob (who whiffed on his block) left a whole lot of greenbeans in the old oven."

Or something like that.

Gotta give Morey the props!!

Running the mountain with the rookies... It's doing things such as this that enables Morey to continue to have a NFL career.

They should do squaw peak its a tougher hike!

I don't know about that. I think Squaw Peak is higher, but Camelback has steeper inclines at certain sections. You can even see Cody Brown using his hands to help keep balance as he goes up the mountain, you don't get much of that on Squaw Peak.

I always found Camelback to be much tougher than Squaw Peak.

I believe Camelback is the highest point in the Valley? And while the steps at Squaw Peak (Piestawa Peak) do suck, Camelback is definitely the tougher of the two...
