What I don't like is there has been no outside the box thinking with bringing in coaches. All these guys are ex Carolina Panthers coaches that Wilks already knows except for the couple of guys being kept from the old staff. I don't like this way of thinking at all. It screams I'm going to hire all my friends so I will have nothing but yes men. Who is going to coach a guy like Baker Mayfield if we draft him? If Tom Moore was one of the coaches staying on staff we would have somebody. There is no way I would rely on Byron Leftwich to teach my new QB. He is purely an assistant and a guy in training.

This staff looks okay on defense because we all think Wilks will be running the defense, but where is the experience coming from at the coordinator spots and at QB coach. Why wasn't a guy like Chuck Pagano hired or even Jack Del Rio for the DC spot. People think Bruce Arians was bad at hiring nothing but cronies but at least guys like Tom Moore and Pratt had decades of experience behind them. What I see is a coach that might be a leader of men but doesn't know squat about bringing well qualified people in to run things.

To me this is going to be a young staff that is still in training and wet behind the ears. The Cardinals will have a strong defense, but purely a run the ball offense in the mold of the old Buddy Ryan days. The one good thing is at least we have David Johnson and Adrian Peterson to run the rock. Whoever we draft at QB will be on his own so he better be self taught and be able to pull plays out of his butt like Russell Wilson does. I'm not a Mike McCoy fan either. I just think the Cardinals can do better than McCoy. Needless to say I'm not impressed with what going on. I have a feeling that we won't be drafting our QBOTF but bringing in a vet to run the team period and that scares the hell out of me. It's one thing to have a bridge QB for maybe one season to get your guy ready and another to just throw anyone out there to run the team because he has some time in the league. I don't know about everybody else but I am sick of that approach.

I hope Michael Bidwill and Steve Keim do whats right and draft our QBOTF this year. We need that long term QB to even have a chance at having a New England Patriots type of dynasty. You can't keep having short term fixes, you have to be in it for the long haul.

Smacks of assistants to the assistants staff hiring. I mirror the OP thoughts. Also comes off as a low budget staff.

I can't wait for this off season to continue. I really like what the Cards are doing. I don't read up on these things/people like a lot on here do. I get most of my info right here, second or third hand knowledge. I am easily swayed back and forth (Charlie Brown syndrome) between the different coaches and players.

I was hoping for the coach from Philly, defillipo, but since we did not get him, I'm all in on McCoy. So now, I hope that the fans will get in line with the hire and quit all the bashing that I have been reading. It does get old. Now, I can't wait for the combine and draft.

I get tired of all the negativism that some posters keep posting, over and over, the same thing. Enough already. I want my kool aid.

Go CARDS.

Yep that's how I see it. Might be the cheapest staff in all the NFL. At this point they might as well keep Drew Stanton and let him hand the ball off because I don't see much of an offense no matter who is at QB with McCoy.

Aren't all coaches assistants, other than the head coach ?

John DeFillipio is a QB coach, he would have been assistant to the assistant.

Maybe I am not understanding right.

I will say this, if we want to make a money vs. production comparison, we should keep an eye on the Raiders since they are certainly not being cheap with their coaching staff.

Interesting thoughts tho, that is for sure.

Yes but some of these guys were assistant's assistants. Seems as if they skipped a step.

How do you become a coordinator without being an assistant's assistant first ?

Steve Wilks was the head coaching assistant, and Al Holcomb was Wilks's assistant. That would make Holcomb the assistant's assistant.

Wilks goes up to head coaching, and Holcomb goes to coordinator.....that would be be 1 step up the ladder each.

Maybe the Assistant's assistant's assistant ? :D

I guess in the end it doesn't matter, the argument is you would like coaches with more high end experience and the least amount of the world assistant in front of their names. One can't blame you for that.

OT: I wonder how many times you have to write assistant in front of a guys name to get to the ball boy ? I should email Larry Fitzgerald, he would know.

No one knows if Wilks will be successful or not. But he is starting right.

1. Good first press conference (as opposed to wearing suits that are too big or proclaiming a winner in the town)
2. Quickly mentioning the conversations with Fitz, Peterson and David Johnson to soothe Cardinal fan nerves
3. Hiring an offensive coordinator that has multi faceted experience who runs a power blocking scheme. The scheme suits the personnel Cards have on the line
4. Signing Jeff Rodgers who is an upgrade over Amos that also brings in experience
5. Keeping the coaches that Wilks believe will help like Foote, Graver etc instead of letting all of them go coz they are all "BA guys"
6. Indicating some flexibility to adapt on the defense (3-4 vs 4-3) and to personnel available

Next step, hoping to hear that Wilks will call plays the first year before handing it over to Holcomb.

Words don't win games. But starting off wrong would have set off the alarm bells.

So it is correct to say the new regime is off to a right start.

I think he said that he (Wilks) would not call the plays. I don't think this is an issue as the game plan will be his for sure. It's a matter of opinion but I prefer a coach to manage the entire game and let his coordinators call the plays.

I like the same approach. I wish Wilks call plays first year only as he is the experienced of the two. An year in a (relatively) new system (4-3 vs 3-4) and new players will help Holcomb. My 2 cents

McCoy concerns me but the rest of the people seem like good choices.

MBSK are on the clock to do right by this coaching staff. It's a wonder that any professional coach even got near enough to our team to sign a contract considering we don't even have a token QB under contract.

BA signed---his last gasp opportunity to be a HC and brought his guy Stanton along with him.

Not sure there has ever been a similar situation in the modern NFL with a team conducting a HC search without a QB in place. It's like a used car salesman offering you that beauty over in the corner and, by the way, it doesn't have an engine.

I'm giving these new coaches plenty of room with the spotlight now on MBSK to come through for them and their commitment to the Cards.

Now that the coaching search and dominoes have fallen I am OK with what the Cards ended up with. McCoy is the real question mark but that will probably be determined as to whoever the QB ends up being.

I will say again, as long as it isn't Drew or Blaine I don't care. Time to move on from that hot mess.

What QBs did we have on the roster when BA came aboard?

Stanton and Palmer were both right around or post-BA. Does a third-string guy count?

How about Whis? Leinart?

We had bupkis when Denny came aboard, IIRC.

looks like McCoy is the Ray Horton of this coaching staff to some degree. When BA was hired we all had hopes for the offense but were freaked out over how the defense was gonna do... no we all see positives for the defense and are freaked out over what the offense is gonna do.

it worked out pretty well last time... surprisingly, one might say that defense we all sweated over actually outperformed our offense with all of our offensive coaches.

but right now out of this group... I am expecting them to go find a Trent Dilfer to go with what should become a Ravenesque defense.

I'm more of a wait & see. No need to get all out sorts & think everything is going to suck when we honestly don't know.

No judgment on coaches until we see them in action.

As to playcalling - I want our most aggressive and effective playcaller dialing up plays - I don't care if it's McCoy, Wilks, Leftwich or Michael Bidwill. Playcalling is too high a priority to hand it off to the nearest guy in the press box or sidelines.

I’m a big fan of continuity. I think a coaching staff that knows each other pretty well already is going to be a cohesive unit that presents a unified front and the same philosophies to its players.

McCoy is a question mark, but I do remember being envious of the teams that had him years ago, so I’m going to hold out hope here.

As fans, we see the “names,” but this isn’t a videogame where each person performs the same no matter what team or scheme they’re in. Same goes for coaching. It’s why a guy like Todd Haley didn’t get considered for OC. Just a difference in philosophy and style, despite success.

I like that Wilks was open to retaining some assistants where he saw success. This hasn’t been a failure of a franchise over the past few years, there are parts that work.

case in point could be our defensive coordinators. Nobody wanted Horton, then they wanted him to be our HC... then nobody wanted Bowles because his defenses sucked, until he got here...then they wanted Bowles to be HC... then nobody liked Bettcher, but our defense got better even than it was with Bowles in some ways....and some people here wanted him as HC.

IMO the strongest thing in McCoys favor is the time he had with Tebow. It is very likely if we bring in a rookie QB we will be adding RPO's to the offense...we didnt do that with Palmer...also, if the draft plays out like so many chicken littles are afraid it will the only option we are gonna have at QB in the draft is gonna be Jackson at 15 or Luke Falk later in the second round. If those are the options I will take Lamar Jackson at 15 all day long...which means we need RPO's in the offense and a coordinator who can adapt to the strengths of the QB.
