The Blue Jackets still need work on their starts, but their finishing kicks are becoming more impressive by the game.
Despite trailing 3-0 after one period Friday night at sold-out Nationwide Arena, the Blue Jackets pulled back into the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with an wild 7-6 shootout win over the Vancouver Canucks in front of 18,586 who were treated to an exhilarating third period, overtime and shootout.
Trailing 5-3 early in the third, the Blue Jackets overcame the two-goal deficit and took a brief 6-5 lead on goals by Denton Mateychuk, captain Boone Jenner and Mathieu Olivier. Aatu Raty tied it on the ensuing shift after Olivier's goal, which forced OT, and then a shootout was decided by Kent Johnson's goal in the first round plus three saves by Elvis Merzlikins.
Earning two points pushed the Blue Jackets (32-29-10) past the Montreal Canadiens for the second wild-card spot with the New York Rangers playing at the Anaheim Ducks with a chance to supplant Columbus late Friday night. The Canadiens (33-30-9, 75 points) lost 4-1 on Friday at the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Rangers (34-32-6, 74 points) played in Anaheim.
Vancouver got off to a 3-0 lead with three straight goals scored in the first period by Karlsson, Boeser and DeBrusk. The Blue Jackets matched the Canucks in shots (10-10) but paid for key mistakes that resulted in power play goals for Karlsson and DeBrusk.
The Jackets went to the locker room for the first intermission hearing a smattering of boos while down three goals, but it didn’t take long to turn them into cheers starting the second period. Jenner, Marchenko and Fabbro scored three unanswered goals in the first 8:44 of the period to tie it 3-3 and breathe some life back into the Jackets’ evening.
They found the hard way, however, why falling behind by multiple goals in the NHL is so difficult to fully overcome. The Canucks scored the next two goals to take a 5-3 lead that was just too much for the Blue Jackets to surpass.
Myers made it 4-3 with an ugly short-handed goal with 8:33 left in the second, Raty pushed it to 5-3 with a wrist shot that beat Merzlikins under the glove off a solo rush up the ice 6:42 into the third and that was the deciding goal.
Mateychuk cut it to 5-4 for the Blue Jackets on the game’s next shift, but they couldn’t tie it after Danforth’s overturned goal that appeared to be an equalizer.
