Ok... my major question here has to do with salary and the role that plays in determining compensation...

Plummer signed for $40 million over 6 years with $12 million signing bonus

Boston signed for 7 years $42 million with a $6 million signing bonus....

Based on what I thought I was reading.. it looked liked you offset qualifying players based on their salaries that they signed for... if that is the case.....One of these salaries should offset the salaries of all the guys we signed almost.... leaving us with down 1 qualified guy making almsot $6 million a year..

Maybe I am offbase somewhere but that is how I looked at the info....on here

If I am reading this right no matter what the contracts are if we sign more qualifing FA then we lost we get no comp picks no matter what the contracts are.

"It is possible for a team to get a compensatory pick even if it doesn’t suffer a net loss."

Becuase we didnt loss more players then signed we didnt suffer a "net lose".

But we could still get a comp pick if the below happens

"a team could get one even if it signed more qualifying players than it lost, as long as the net value of the players lost was at least twice as much (or so) as the net value of the players signed."

In this case the contracts of the players lost is not twice as much as the players signed.

As the NFL explains, compensatory picks are awarded to teams that lose more or better compensatory free agents than they acquire.

This is the key im my opinion... you lose the two top players at their positions in free agency....

I think we can argue these guys were considered substantially better than the guys we signed based on the experts opinions when they entered the free agency period

But who is to say that one player is better then another player or who is the top FA in free agency that certian year, it is all subjective.(note I am not saying that the players we signed are better then we lost). That is why I dont think when it says, "more or better compensatory free agents than they acquire" they arent talking about what the experts feel is the best FA's that year but rather actual numbers, such as contracts, FA's signed VS. FA lost, stats games played, end of year awards, ect. Plus that statement is a broad generalized intro statement at the beginning of the NFL rules explaining how the general process works. Then later on they go and make more detailed statements as to what they mean by "more or better compensatory free agents than they acquire".

Edit - I also got an answer from hin via a PM message. And explained it as such.

If more qualifying FA are signed then lost it doesnt matter what the contracts, playing time or stats were. If more are signed then lost no comp picks will be given out except for one rule, which states we may be able to get a 7th round pick if the contracts of the players lost is twice as large as the players lost.
We barely missed out on this rule. Players lost - Plummer, Sanders(yes he does count), and Boston have a total average yearly contract of 14.73 mil. The average of the 5 players we signed is 7.735. If we paid our FA a total of 7.365 we would have got a 7th rounder.

We still may get a comp pick at the end of the 7th if there are not a total of 32 comps given out. 32 comp picks are given out every year. if 32 picks arent given out then at the end of the 7th round picks would be given out in the order of what would essentially be an 8th round. For example if there are only 28 picks given out essentially giving SD, Oak, AZ, and NYG the last picks of the draft.
