If the Hawks insist on compensation, I say we offer them Triano and the Toronto pick. If that's not enough then we hire Igor or Becky Hammon or JVG.

What if they both end up in the lottery? Now you just gave up a lotto pick for Bud.

Well, what if the Bucks go in the toilet, Bledsoe holds out for a new contract and Antetokounmpo gets traded.

There are no sure things in life.

At least my idea, ensures the Suns get the best lotto pick in 2021 if it came down to that. :wink2:

Don't get me wrong. I don't want the Suns to give the Hawks anything for Bud but I'm trying to play through the different scenarios if it costs the Suns a first round pick.

At least the Hawks would know they are in safe hands with Triano. :)

Seems to me that the Hawks are ready to part ways with Bud anyways and thus giving them anything beyond a 2nd round pick (preferably not #31) should be the most it should take.

I think Scott Bordow has a good handle on the Suns. If he thinks it will cost the Suns a first round pick, I'm thinking this is the likely cost for the Suns to get Bud.

I keep hoping Gambo provides some insight.

It would be an awfully good sign if Sarver goes along with paying a coach 7 mil. I'd like to see the deal close soon - like today! I expect McD to do a decent job of limiting the compensation to Atlanta.

Some, perhaps most, of that 7 million is likely due to his role as GM. Now that he's been demoted, I have no idea what he'd expect.

Everything I've read suggests that Travis Schlenk wants to get rid of Bud and partly out of a desire to not pay him that kind of money while they are in the early stages of rebuilding. If that's the case, we shouldn't compensate them even though they will surely ask for it. And if it's not the case, if they actually want to keep Bud, we should restrict our coaching search to coaches that are available IMO.

If we are the only bidders, fine. But if are competing with another team who wants him, too, it becomes more complex.

He is probably just basing that on past coach trades (mainly Doc). However I think it is apparent that the Hawks don't want to keep him around at this point and will likely accept less than a 1st if it comes down to it.

He isn't a player. Can you give me one example of that ever happening in the NBA? Atlanta can't control where he goes, they can only control IF he goes. They are locked into paying him as a coach and as a GM and that makes no financial sense to a club just starting it's rebuild.

But with competition, won't we have to come up with a better offer?

This. Bud can not be traded like players do. It is only a "trade" because you would be sending the Hawks compensation for letting him out of his contract so that he can sign with your team. What team Bud ends up on is up to him unless the Hawks decide to not let him out of his contract. Which seems unlikely since they are letting him interview for other teams.

No because it is up to Bud as to where he goes, not the Hawks. The compensation is simply the cost of getting them to let him out of his contract.

NO. Errr, Why? Again, you can't really trade coaches. Atlanta can keep him or release him, that's it. If Bud wants Milwaukee, our offering to give up the 16th pick isn't going to change what Bud wants.

Bud just resigned as president of Bball ops in Atlanta -- he wasnt demoted -- because he knew he couldnt do both jobs. I dont see that being the case by any means.

If the Suns dont wrap this up, there will be other teams immediately inquiring. Bud is one of, if not the best, coach potentially available (even via trade).

I don't follow Atlanta all that closely but that is not what I've read on Hawks forums. From what I've read, Ressler and/or Schlenk forced it and the rumors about the breakup started from the day they introduced their GM when Bud was unavailable.

Bud may want to come to the Suns but if the Hawks want to play hardball and drag out to draft day, who is to say Bud won't relent and choose the Bucks who may offer compensation.

Phoenix might be his A choice but who is to say Milwaukee isn't his B choice.

The longer this drags out, the easier it is for the Suns to lose him.

That's not the same thing but sure, that's possible. I don't think it's likely but it could happen. Unless you already know who your coach is going to be or if you've decided to dictate what system the team will play, you're going to want to hire your coach prior to the draft. And I don't mean the day before as you're likely going to want and need his/her input.

We are in agreement, the Suns don't want to wait until draft day to hire their coach.

However, what if the Bucks promise the Hawks their first round pick for Bud come draft day?

You know me... I can't stand the Hawks and the Joe Johnson hijack so I don't want to give them anything.

Maybe if McDonough can't work a deal between Bud and the Hawks we move on to another coach.

Have you ever been to Holbrook? :D

Well, I suspect the Bucks would have to forfeit a couple of future first round picks by violating the Stepien rule (Minnesota style). (That's just a guess, I'm not sure how it would be viewed) Unless you mean that on the night of the draft they call up the Hawks and make the offer? And if that's the case, I'm quite sure we won't care as we will have hired someone a few months earlier.

And yes, I've been to Holbrook and along the way we stopped and our friends took a picture of us standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona.

Yes. I'm talking about during the draft.

I'm sure you are joking here but they are on the same interstate. :p

Actually I'm not. We were with a couple we knew when we were stationed in Germany and they wanted to see as much of the state as they could in the week they visited. As we were all Eagles fans, it was an easy call.

Once again it doesn't matter unless Bud wants to go to the Bucks. If he wants to go to the Suns and not the Bucks than the Bucks will have absolutely nothing to do with the situation.

Until I read it again, I thought you were saying you took a picture of us standing on a corner in Holbrook.

Oh, I agree but life is full of choices. My first job was a second choice.

Bud may not be locked into going to the Suns.
