COYOTES ACQUIRE KAIGORODOV FROM OTTAWA FOR COMRIE

Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Michael Barnett announced that the Coyotes have acquired 23-year-old center Alexei Kaigorodov from the Ottawa Senators for center Mike Comrie.

Kaigorodov recorded 1 assist in 6 games with Ottawa this season. The native of Chelyabinsk, Russia made his NHL debut this season for the Senators at Montreal on Oct. 14. Kaigorodov has also registered 1-4-5 in 12 games with Magnitogorsk in Russia this season.

The 6-foot, 194-pound Kaigorodov registered 9-21-30 and 42 penalty minutes (PIM) in 50 games last season to rank 4th in scoring and T-3rd in assists with Magnitogorsk. He led Magnitogorsk in points and assists in 2004-05 when he recorded 15-34-49 and 40 PIM in 57 games. Kaigorodov represented Russia at the 2003 World Championships, playing 2 games in the tournament.

Kaigorodov was Ottawa’s 2nd choice (2nd round, 47th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He was rated the 9th best European skater in Central Scouting’s final ranking entering the draft.

Comrie registered 7-13-20 and 20 PIM in 24 games with the Coyotes this season. In 3 seasons with the Coyotes, he recorded 45-50-95 and 132 games. The Coyotes acquired Comrie from Philadelphia for Sean Burke, Branko Radivojevic, and Ben Eager on Feb. 9, 2004.

Not sure I understand this, considering the Yotes have actually been playing half decent lately...They must really like this Kaigorodov kid.

Covered a little in the Season thread, but with Reinprecht returning, the Coyotes have 2 extra players. I'm not totally surprised that they got rid of Comrie. He probably was one of the few players worth anything to another team, plus he was making $3M and sure to not to be resigned. I'm sure they shopped Comrie and Nagy. Ricci and Roenick have no value.

Although I really like hiim, I'm guessing Ricci is probably close to retirement.

Sorry Scott, didn't see the mention in the other thread...

BTW, what the heck are the Coyotes thinking in getting another whining, crying spoiled russian who refuses to play in the minors.

Are they bringing him back to play with the Coyotes? I assume not if they just made this trade to clear space for Reinprecht.

Mabey he and Lisin can console each other in Russia.

What a joke.

I do agree that getting another whining Russian is a bit questionable.

Personally, I recently got tired of watching Comrie play to much with the puck trying to do tricky passes and moves. Reinprecht was a scoring machine last season and he'll be inserted between Nagy and Doan.

I was thinking the same thing. Then again, maybe the team is moving to Moscow.

Personally, I do not like this deal one bit. Perhaps it is a move to clear up salary space, but I would have liked something more in return (the scouting report on Kaigorodov says that he has "the potential to be a player in the NHL." ouch.)

I think this deal is the beginning of the end for the Coyotes' young core that, just this past off-season, Gretzky said that they were going to build around. On that note, there is a rumor floating around in Vancouver that they are going to trade LW Ryan Smyth and D Matt Greene to the Coyotes for LW Ladislav Nagy, D Ed Jovanovski, and a pick.

Let yet another year of rebuilding begin!

Wow, if that rumored trade went down, now THAT would be a joke. While I like Ryan Smyth, giving up Jovo and Nagy and a pick would be a huge step in the wrong direction. I'd imagine that rumor is just some wishful thinking Canuck fans...at least I hope it is.

I didn't hear it from an Oilers fan and it is not out of the question that this deal would go down because: A). our management likes to throw in draft picks like none other and B). It resides in the realm of the irrational, which the Coyotes’ GM frequently visits.

Geez Boondock, you're just full of good news, aren't ya.

Although unfortunately what you say makes perfect sense.

I don't think this is a good trade for the Coyotes (in terms of what they got back in exchange), but I also don't think the team will terribly miss Comrie.

I think the same can be said for Nagy. Again, I wouldn't be surprised to see Nagy traded at some point prior to the deadline -- for sure if the Coyotes are out of the playoffs again. He's on a one year deal (as was Comrie) who went to arbitration. He's no long timer and neither was Comrie.

I just read the story on tsn.ca.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=190679&hubname=

Comrie made it clear he was testing the free agent market this summer so he wasn't in the future plans. The Coyotes got somebody for Comrie and they also opened up a spot for Reinprecht without pissing off the guys who will be with the team next year: Fischer, Gratton, etc. From what I understand, they had been shopping Comrie for a while and he was out with a foot injury so he was difficult to move. Ottawa is missing two Centers and is desparate for a replacement -- hell they actually went after Nedved on waivers. Nedved is horrible and has the 2nd worse +/- rating in the NHL right now.

Ricci is the next guy they need to do something with.

It is very puzzling that this team waited until they had won 9 out of the last 10 possible points before starting to dump guys, but this trade had supposedly been in the works for quite a while. Since Comrie flat out said he was going to test the free agent market, you can't blame the Coyotes for getting something for him while they still could, but the return is rather underwhelming.

From what I've heard, Kaigorodov has a ton of skill but is a soft player. He was also listed as the number two prospect in Ottawa's system by Hockey's Future, but the Sens prospect pool is average at best. Like Lisin, he jumped to Russia rather than accepting a demotion to the minors. However, Kaigorodov was told that if he did not make the team he was free to go back to Russia for the season. The problem with Kaigorodov is that he is already 23, so he is running out of time to establish himself as a NHL player.

The Coyotes didn't get much in return. And I agree that this trade had been in the works for a while -- I guess until Comrie had a mini hot streak to seal the deal.

Wayne's quote in the Republic is interesting. Perhaps they shed the $3M Comrie so they could make some moves near the deadline, good or bad. I don't see this as a dismantling of the team.

________________________

With Comrie, who notched 20 points in 24 games, off its books, Phoenix's payroll is at $41 million. The NHL salary cap is $44 million.

The Coyotes dealt Comrie because they had too many centers, because they wanted to have some salary-cap space in case they wanted to make another move before the trade deadline in February, and because he was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

His salary for this season is $3 million.

"If we're going to go forward here and be able to make some moves, we had to remove some people before we could add some people," coach Wayne Gretzky said.

The Coyotes have won three consecutive games and four of their past five.

Three other teams offered Phoenix draft picks for Comrie, but the Coyotes wanted a prospect.

Comrie became expendable because center Steven Reinprecht was removed from the injured reserve list Wednesday.

Senators beat the Flyers today 6-1. Out of the 6 Senators goals, Mike Comrie didn't have a point. Further, he was on the ice when the Flyers scored their long goal and not on the ice at all during the 6 Flyers goals. He finished the game with a -1 +/- rating.
