I thought he might have gotten a brain or something. Guy has made so many bad choices and self-destructed his own career. Idiot.

He has gone for a year and passed every drug test. He also completed anger management classes BEFORE any sentence has been laid by the NFL down for the assault charge. He will have also completed his entire year of probation that he was sentence by the court for the assault charge.

While everyone expects a suspension for this, it would seem odd to me to hand down a suspension AFTER the player has turned everything around and proved himself for a year. If the disciplinary actions of the NFL are intended to punish bad behavior and reward good behavior, this would be the moment to show mercy in order to encourage players to follow through with counseling and rehab.

If I was Goodell, I would probably reduce his drug suspension 2 games (retroactively) and give him a 4 game suspension for the domestic, which would mean two more games and he can play.

I would then praise him publicly for sticking with his drug and anger rehab program and encourage other players to get help BEFORE they end up suspended.

Of course, I am assuming that he has really been the good camper that he says he has been.

I wish the players who get busted for using drugs or beating up women had a clause in their contract which voided out the time (games) they miss due to the consequences of their actions. It is ridiculous that these guys get to clown around and break the law and still get paid.

I believe the one year (minimum) suspension he just served (assuming he is re-instated) fully completes his punishment under the substance abuse program, so there should be no additional two games for that, unless the commissioner finds some reason to delay his re-instatement.

However, Washington has not yet served any suspension time for the DV situation, and in the current climate (even though the incident happened before the new DV guidelines were adopted) I doubt Goodell will see fit to reduce his suspension much below 4 games, minimum.

I thought NFL suspensions are unpaid.

I am not sure that you read what I said. Retroactive reduction of the drug sentence. So only two more games of suspension would constitute a 4 game domestic violence suspension.

Maybe I am making it too complicated.

Yeah, I guess you're right. Washington got a roster bonus. $5 million one year and $5 million the next. More than his $2.9 million salary... So he still got paid, even though he had to give some of that back too...

I read if a player is suspended for an entire year their contract is basically put on hold. So they could be going into their 3rd playing year, but it would only be their 2nd contract year because of that lost year.

Aha, I gotcha. I get your point, but has Goodell ever retroactively reduced a suspension for "good behavior"?

D-Wash lost $5mil and had his contract pushed back a year as a result of the punishment. He did not get glorified paid time off.
