We have a number of extentions to get done. First and foremost is Karlos Dansby and if Calvin Pace keeps it going like he is, he will need to get done. This is his final year. Same for Bryant Johnson, JJ Arrington and Eric Green.

I wouldn't anticipate too many F/A signings next year.

Order of importance.

1) Dansby
2) Eric Green
3) Calvin Pace (if he keeps playing this way)
Edit: And if Pace is reasonable...he's not a star by any means but solid.

BJ will want too much money and will be a starter somewhere else.
JJ can be replaced in the draft.

Dansby wont cost nearly as much as people think he will.

BJ wont cost all that much and can be replaced with a draftee or low level FA signee.

Pace wont cost all that much and can be replaced in the draft or with a healthy Okeafer.

Green is a RFA and dont have to worry about him until 2009 offseason.

JJ wont be a FA until 2009 offseason.

I would rather extend Hodel before extending BJ or Pace.

We will still have plenty of cap dollars to spend on free agents, that wont be what stops us(also consider that is before we cut or renegotiate players next offseason like we did with Milford, Clancy, and Ross this year). The amount and quality of Free agents is going to stop us.

The list of upcoming Free Agents is already far worse then that of this past offseason and thats without any of them getting franchise tags or extensions yet. When you include that a lot teams will once again have a ton of cap space, the Free agent market will be one of the worst in recent memory. Consider this all but 5 teams in the nfl have more then 5 Mill in un-used cap dollars right now to spend on extensions.

The Free Agent market wont come out of this dip until the 2009 offseason, minimum IMO.

joeshmo,

Thanks for the clarification on some of those players I thought would become F/A

I understand that the season has to play out before we know what we might have in Pace. I have a feeling, that he's going to get stronger and stronger as the season progresses. My hunch. I'm not 100% that Berry has another season after this one before he's done. We'll see.

Hodel is a must extend. I'd forgot about him.

And if we can extend BJ (assuming he's content as a #3WR and prepared to continue living in the SW, versus the NE) for what a F/A #2WR gets (cuz someone will put those numbers in front of him), then I'm all for it.

Is your cap sticky up to date? Where are we in terms of cap dollars with the recent moves?

We have probably 3.5-4 Mill. left after the Leckey cut.

But we can have zero dollars and still do an extensions for everyone. It just means you have to structure the bonus to hit in 2008 instead of 2007.

If we have 3.5 left, I do not think we have enough room to extend Dansby!!!

Not to jack the thread or anything, but can you imagine this burner paired up with Fitz and Boldin.

Bernard Berrian, UFA, Chicago Bears
Berrian was able to put together a decent season in ’06. His 51 receptions and six touchdowns aren’t overly impressive, but they do suggest that he is an improving talent and may be a strong number two option or a decent number one option down the road. His size isn’t ideal, but his speed and athleticism has countered that enough to allow him to be a solid contributor. At just 26 years of age, Berrian will garner interest from teams looking to capitalize on his growth at the position.

Completely agree with this post... Further, I wouldn't spend one more dime on Pace if I didn't have to. Same for BJ... They can and should be easily replaced in draft of FA signings...

But you are all for a lifetime contract extension of one billion dollars for JJ though. Don't lie.

and with Quentin Moses signed through 2010, the man to replace Pace is most likely on the roster already

1) Okeafor and Berry still have injury issues and aren't getting any younger

2) Quentin Moses has yet to play at a new position so I would not in any way say he's a replacement just yet

3) 3-4 teams never have enough good LBs so if Pace continues to play at this level then you keep him PERIOD. Not to mention good DE/LB hybrids are hard to find

Why not. We can have zero dollars left and still sign him to an extension. Instead of getting a signing bonus he gets a roster bonus in 2008. Same amount of gauranteed money just different ways of accounting to make it work under the cap.

The only thing having cap dollars right now does for extending players is to lessen their cap amounts in later years.

For God's sake, why not? It's the line we've been sold...again. We'll have a ton of money, and we'll definitely have holes to be filled.

if they have to, i think the Cards will use the franchise tag on Dansby. Pace and BJ will likely be allowed to test the FA market but i could see Pace coming back much like they did with Shipp last year. I think BJ signs somehwere else. Pace has played well so far,but it's only 2 games. If he plays like that all season, he'll have made himself alot of money.

I know Fitz isn't a FA at then end of the seaon, but don't they want to extedn him as well? Dansby is a must they must get that deal done soon.

I think we should extend Dansby NOW and IF Pace continues to play at the level he's been playing extend him next. If BJ wants to play in Baltimore try negotiating a trade, other wise try extending him as well. I believe our GM structured this years FA signings the way he did so as to position the team to do these signings (the extensions) without breaking the bank.

This is just my opinion, what do I know ?

Pace, Moses, Okeafor...I still think we'll likely draft a DE/OLB tweener in the first round next year--especially if we're drafting in the late teens or early 20's.

I think there is no boubt that we go after a DE/LB type in round 1 next year. Rivers or Laurinitis would look nice in Cardinal red but they may go too high for where the Cards will be drafting. In fact i can see our draft lookung like this:
1-DE/OLB
2-Speed WR
3-Guy we can cut :D
4-7 - OL,DB,LB depth
