I concur. I managed a Deer Valley LL Majors team that won the Deer Valley championship, and then went on to defeat Buckeye and Gilbert. As soon as the season was over, some of the players went straight into travel ball. Then Fall Ball. Then simutaneously the school season and travel ball, etc. etc.
Some of these kids have no off-season while their bodies are growing.
Yep... I used to coach 11 & 12 year olds for many years... finally had to call it quits as I just couldn't take the parents any longer.
The problem is they all want their kids to be the next Roger Clemens. So they identify them at young ages and then try to make them specialists by pigeon-holing them into the Pitcher spot. The kids are throwing all year long, and worse, being taught to throw junk!
The wear & tear on arms, elbows, ligaments...the kids are just too young and not nearly developed enough to handle that over the long term...
I heard a great interview with Fergie Jenkins - who lives up in Anthem, over the weekend. He was stressing this exact point and said he up until he was a senior in high school, he played first base and outfield. He said all the pitchers in the majors that he played with all had similar experiences...
